I don't see what your argument is - He was born in America of Irish descent. Therefore, he's Irish - American. Irish is his ethnic background. Being from an old world your ethnic background happens to be the place you were born in. That's not the case if you're from America so you're African-American, Irish-American- Italian American and so forth. Same DNA = location doesn't matter.
