hey guys i have owned my S90 for about four months now and I am having silly problems with videos -- tons of background noise from the microphone. i didn't buy this camera for vids but heck it doesn't even take quality audio. My massive A640 takes better vids in AVI format - the audio is much better. any ideas on what's causing the audio to be so bad or is this a design problem that you're also experiencing?
Hmmm - it's not the most plasticky feeling P&S I'ev ever used. But I wouldn't say it feels like a DSLR, either. If you want a solid-feeling compact, go with the Olympus or Panasonic waterproof cameras. But they don't have image quality anything like the S90.
That is correct if it's in the auto flash mode or the camera is in the auto mode. If you're using a manual exposure mode you can manually turn the flash on or off and it will pop up or retract as you change the setting.
@phototristan My immediate reaction is "yes and no." I know where you're coming from but I expect there's some technical limitation involved. I doubt that Canon made a decision to leave that feature out. The G11, which has the same sensor doesn't have HD video, either. Both cameras are pretty slow as far as burst mode goes so I think there's something about the sensor that makes it hard to dump the data fast enough for video or a competitive burst rate.
@PhotographyREVIEW Can someone tell me why HD video would be better than this cameras video if the video I see from this camera looks better than the HD videos I've seen from other pocket cams on youtube? What's the advantage of HD? Will HD look better on TV when burned to DVD? Sorry, I don't know much about cameras & I'm trying to decide between the Canon S90 & Sony TX7. I appreciate anyone's help.
@skjoyner The advantage of HD is highrer resolution. There are a lot of variables with video quality, though - especially what you see here on YouTube. The biggest is the video editing/exporting. If it's not done right the final quality you see here will be pretty bad. Also, are watching them here in HD? To see the actual quality you need to click on the HD link for wahhtever video you're watching.
@PhotographyREVIEW Yes, I choose 720p when watching HD videos. But the video I see from the S90 looks as good. How can 480p look as good as HD 720p? That's the confusing part for me. Or maybe there is a difference and my eyes are not seeing it? Sorry for what may seem like silly questions. I always had 35mm film cameras. Is the video on the sony TX7 1080p 60fps better than than the video on the canon 480p? I'm trying to decide on these two cameras which would be the best.
Yeah that is pretty stupid. They make the ultimate compact camera and then they dont put hd video?Well thats great. Still it does take great photos in low light and I guess that was their goal.
@coolwaterdvr You know, I'm really not sure how many AF points it has. I took a look at the camera and I can't tell. I would guess it has either 9 or 12. However, I don't believe they are selectable. They only come into play if you use the AiAF Face Detection focus. If you choose to use one focus point you only get the center. You can choose between a standard and smaller AF point, though.
@JogBird - there are tight shots of the camera in the middle of the video. What is it you want to see? What am I missing? I will incorporate your criticism into the next video I make. Thanks :-)
Thanks for your criticism. I think I'm offering a little more than the box or brochure, though. I do have the camera in my hands. If you look at the description there's a link to a short article on the site that includes high-res sample photos.
Can you give me some recommendations about which compact digital camera to chose regarding photo and video quality?
Thank you.

I was under the impression that the s90's flash was motorised and popped up and down according to the flash setting on the camera. Interesting...
