Superbe!!! BRAVA
I met Madame C. in the Avenue Frochet back in 2003, while she could still practice and receive guests. My shrink lived in her building so I told him I would just love to speak with her for a minute. She couldn't have been more gracious, "old school French" like my Dad. I told her how I would never forget her performances, especially in "Dialogues of the Carmelites". She was a very, very special artist and a lovely, genuine, French dame!
Well, her voice may not be as splendid as it was when she was younger, but this Habanera of hers has certainly been remarkably sung, with real seductiveness.
I adore Crespin ... her Sieglinde is unbelievable and her "Un bel di," surprisingly enough, is one of the best I've ever heard. However, I can't call this any better than okay.
There is more than one way to interpret this meaty role. Crespin goes the more intelligent route which works for me. This is a 'late' recording in her career unfortunately. Wish her Erato recording were still available.
I will never forget her Prioress in "Dialogues of the Carmelites", 1986. Her english was the best of the entire Met cast!
Chapeau bas Madame Crespin!
I agree her top was not always reliable, however her pianissimi high could be just magical. Her Ave Maria from Otello in a studio disc of arias ends on the most beautiful A flat I have ever heard.
Today the line between soprano and mezzo is fuzzier than ever. I won't go over old territory re Bartoli. Many great sopranos do mezzo stuff great a la Waltraud Meier - when their voices are really large and smooth there is no demarcation - mezzo - - soprano. Other examples would be Christa Ludwig, Shirley Verret, Grace Bumbry and VDLAngeles.
I loved Régine, and I, ve seen her onstage several times as well. Therefore, it is hardo for me to say I was never fond of her Carmen.
Precisely, Carmen was not "very french".One does not expect a "french duchess" singing ( and playing) Carmen, but an Andalousian gipsy, a "zingara2, if you know what I mean. And Crespin fell short of giving us that.
Règine Crespin had to drop her soprano roles very soon because she couldn't sing well not even an A natural.(She did very little in italian repertoire because of that fact).
Dear mariaperrucha, you are right that the top of Régine Crespin was not her best in the soprano sphere.BUT you are wrong about her roles she sang most italian roles between 1950 and 1970.Amelia(Paris,Vienna,New-York,Chicago),Aîda(Mexico),Leonora(Lissbon with Corelli and Bastiannini),and Tosca. She sang this role in all famous theater in the world between 1950 and 1970.Did you know her live with Di Stefano(Buenos Aires 65) or with Corelli/George London (New-York 65)
Oh fandedith: Règine sang only three (3) Aìda performances in her whole career! in Mexico, 1962 and she had to drop it inmediately. Her Tosca wasn't completely successful. She never could sing a very good Bflat in Vissi d'arte, it was always short.Règine notes above Aflat were never good and she lost them by 1967/69, only 7 o 8 years after her international career had started
ok you are right about Aîda.Isaid that her top notes the best were.I've got some live with her but unfortunatly i saw her on stage in the late year. She had got the top in her Met Tosca broadcast of January 68 but it seems that she became some problems during the 69/70 season.
she sang Tosca with partners like Del Monaco,Corelli,Tagliavini,Di Stefano,Gianni Raimondi,Vickers,Konya,Tucker,Gobbi,George London,Merrill,MacNeil,Taddei etc..in Paris,Roma,Milano,Wien,New-York,Buenos-Aire,Chicago,Barcelona,San Francisco....Not bad for a soprano without top????
Iwas already wondering why there were never any results when i searched for Regine. Now she's no longer walking this earth, i see...Thanks very, very much for adding video's! Although i never saw her perform, her cd's have dragged me through many difficult times in my life, Thank you, chere Regine Crespin, Crespinette.
RIP Régine Crespin! She was definitely the greatest French diva of the post-War, what an amazingly rich, colourful, seductive and powerful voice she had! Besides, her elegance and charm were irresistible, both in her acting and in her singing.
Thank You For Posting! This is yet another gem from the 83 Centenniel Gala that was sadly not included on the dvd. That gala was pretty much a show of many singers that were just entering that declining state in the voice. But it's always nice to see the greats get out there and have fun.
