Various weeds native to our area in So. Cal. I know which ones are her favorites and which ones to avoid. She also eats broccoli, Jicama, bananas, String Beans, Squash and Romain Lettuce!
@Bravermanfab Awesome! I live downtown in Hanford, a small town (city now) about 40 miles south of Fresno. I found our masculine tortoise (he is an adult male desert tortoise) walking down the sidewalk one street south of me. I spent a month trying to find out who he belonged to. I too, have become his custodian, he fit right into my family of two cats and three dogs. I spent time with these animals and BLM rangers with Navy at Ridgecrest CA many years ago.
looks like a very nice specimen, looks like she has a good environment, i have no doubt that she's well fed, thanks for your service to tortoise-kind :)
@mmmaddie3 A California Desert Tortoise can be legally kept as a pet if it was captive bred. You can register it with California Department of Fish and Game. Mine was captive bred, is registered, and wears a little "license plate" sticker on his shell.
Um... she hibernates in a CLOSET!!! Shouldn't she use her BURROW!!! If she even has one? I am a 10 year old who knows ALOT. This thing is endangered. Where did you get her? F
She was found walking down a busy street in Oceanside CA. She has a man made burrow because they usually live in the desert. It's much to wet in the winter here. She sleeps in her man made burrow in the closet during the winter month. Once a tortoise has been domesticated it is illegal to return them to the wild. She could bring dangerous germs to other wild tortoises! Thanks for your concern we take very good care of her!
Honestly, tortoises will hibernate ANYWHERE where the temperature is right, and they aren't bothered. I have a desert tortoise that hibernates in a paper bag from November till April. She's very comfortable in there. ;)
She shouldn't be hibernating 6 months a year.... 4 months is much more normal. November, December, January and February.

How do you know it's 50 years old?

We took her to the vet once and he estimated her age based on her size and shell markings. It's kind of like reading the rings on a tree trunk!
