this record reminds me (not sonically) of beck's sea change, lukewarm reviews and sincere inspiration. both good records and they get better over time.

poor avey. going through it! I actually dug this LP. Feel bad for him that it got such a lukewarm response especially considering that the inspiration for it was his wife Kria Brekkan leaving him. Go easy posters, he has a pretty rough go of it as is. Mad Love for DAVE!
poor avey. He's going through. Lukewarm response to the LP (i actually enjoy it). also, the inspiration for this album is about his wife, Kria Brekkan leaving him, hence the title Down There. Take it easy posters, he's having a rough go of it as is.
The album art fits this perfect, I feel as if Im 10,000 feet under the ocean, and all the sudden, out of the darkness, this neon thing emerges and this music is my expression of what I see.
I really hope the rest of the album is good. I've always followed both Avey Tare and Panda bear. Although I agree with your opinion on this. I wouldnt go as far as say that I'm disappointed. Those two should collaborate more, i'd definitely be a life long fan then
I agree actually. While i like both of their solo work, it just doesn't compare with with the energy and chaos of animal collective. I really was hoping for a more crazy vocal performances on this album; that's what i love about Avey tare. Panda Bear's solo stuff could use more of his spastic drumming
@Cartpack I mean so far what i can see of Tomboy, you are correct but... Like seriously? Person Pitch was up there with the BEST animal collective albums. It was fantastic, a psychedelic pop masterpeice. theres absolutely no denying that. And as far as this album goes, so far i'm diggin the hell out of it.
@adid420 Oh i'm well aware it is panda's solo work. I thought that comment was about panda strictly. There is a clear difference between panda and the AC :-)
@EyeJustSkateboard I gotta disagree. When I first listened to it I thought the same thing. However the 2nd time i listened to Down There it sounded so much better and the 3rd time I plain out fell in love with it. Down There is one of the most impressive albums I've ever heard and I think once you let go of preconceived notions about the type of music Avey made and just listen to the atmosphere he creates you'll see how good it is, in it's own way.
@toyiahm Oh i know, i've given it a few spins cover to cover- I still don't like it. Believe me, i'm not quick to judge and i pretty much have no preconceptions of what music should sound like. This album is OKAY, it's not terrible it's just lacking. You're right it does have strong atmosphere, but its presence is weak compared to an Animal Collective release. Avey and Panda are 2 sides of a coin. If that coin sits flat you can only hear one angle and it's boring. Flip it, and it's absolute.
@EyeJustSkateboard Nice metaphor, but I'm not sure I agree. Firstly, like thedarkesthole said, I'd put Person Pitch head to head with any AC album except may Merriweather. As for the album, I keep hearing people say, "it sounds like AC, but missing something," but then they don't give any examples of how this is the case. People don't hear the album for what it is. They wanna hear an AC album, but it's not one, in mood or in style. But, since Avey Tare is a member people feel forced to compare.
I didn't get Panda's solo album yet, but I heard a lot of it live at Pitchfork. As much as I love Panda, I gotta say that Avey's whoopin' his ass right now. This is amazing, I can't get enough of it. I can't wait till the album comes out
@petrucciado yeah we're all posers. we pretend to like this stuff to look cool. What the fuck does that even mean? I haven't heard the word poser since seventh grade
This is really great. Even when Animal Collective have made the most inaccessible music it's always been their pop sensibilities that have made them so appealing to me. I really hope the rest of the album is as good as this song
@tonycollective I think this is on the lower end of Avey Tare's capabilities. I bet this one leaked because it wasn't as good/experimental as the rest. I'm feeling extremely optimistic.
well it was released as the official single. but i do think it will get wayyy better then this, relatively speaking. oliver twist leaked, and it was awesome. like animal collective doing r&b
@TRCOOLGUY Ok, you can dish out what ever criticisms you want about the album, but how can you say that an album that contains BEAUTIFUL tracks like "Cemeteries" and "Heather at the Hospital" is uninspired. Sure, you can dislike an album, but can you really speak as to whether Dave Portner was inspired and motivated to write and perform these songs...... No, you can't.

This LP was a major disappointment. Avey Tare and Panda Bear are both lacking without one another.
