British money: 1 pound = 20 shillings 1 shilling = 12 pence 1 pound = 240 pence 1 guinea = 21 shillings This is some example pay amounts for the British Army around that time frame for Infantry (rounded to nearest pound because I'm being lazy). Private 18 pounds/yr Sergeant = 28pounds/yr Captain = 171 pounds/yr Colonel = 410 pounds/yr He has about 10,500 pounds in his account (rather rich).

I am reading the books and watching the series and I see them as two different things, as they should be seen. For starters one starts with Sharpe's Rifles and the other Sharpe's Tiger. Like Nurdbot says, muskets are wildly inaccurate, so you need a lot of them, firing three rounds a minute. That's why the rifles are skirmish troops, and can scatter while still doing damage.
