I always wondered who this great drummer is.....it's Bobby Caldwell, yes the soul singer of the 70s and 80s, whose big hit was "What You Won't Do For Love".
remember when the DJs would play this on the radio and would turn the mic on during the song and say KEEP ON ROCKIN' and then the song would say, SOMEONE SAY KEEP ON ROCKIN'? Classic
Rock music replaced Do Wop & the Big Band era & all the rest of the slick backed crooners, rock was 'dangerous' in that you might make a mistake but kept playing anyway. There weren't many suit & ties in rock of the 70's.
My first R & R hero, I saw The Edgar Winter Group in sold out Madison Square Garden in '74 (Shock Treatment). Dan Hartman had the bass guitar suit...I've also seen Edgar in a half sold out ballroom in Lake Tahoe...
@GreatPotentialSitcom The band was dressed in the hippest fashion of the day. That just happened to look like pajamas. In order to appreciate the performance, I suggest you look at some Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie). Much of the look had to do with "gender bending." It was also fashionable for performers to look "bored" while performing.
They are dumbing down the kids today with this mindless bullshit they call music. The kids aren't even aware they are being dumbed down. The lyrics have no message or ideas. That is the way the ruling class want it.
I also saw Black Sabbath in Hershey, Pa in 73. The music was so fucking loud that it caused some hearing damage. No need for that shit. Fuck Ozzy Osbourne.
The next year in Harrisburg I saw Aerosmith, Queen, Mott the Hoople and another band which I think was Loudface. It was the best concert I ever went to. Again $5.00 No bullshit. No commercialism. Just a bunch of young people (both artists and audience) exploring new music together. Glad I was able to be a part of it.
Saw Rick Derringer with Edgar Winter in Harrisburg, Pa in 1973. They did this song and it kicked assssssssssssss!!!! The concert cost $5.00 Seriously!!
I saw Rick Derringer at the Raincross Square, Riverside, CA ca. '76 or '77.. What I remember of it, they were ver good. But not nearly as good as Johnny Winter at the fabulous Swing Auditorium in Berdoo. Johnny wore a black coat and top hat. The stage lights illuminated only his white hands, face and hair...quite an effect, to say the least!
@sjdanthem yah, i remember the version by johnny winter. and i saw rick and pat travers in concert cerca 76 in san bernardino, and edger winter at the denver collisium, in 73 and it was a good time to be had by all! but somebody else was playing at that sanbernardino concert and i cant remember if it was montrose or johnny winter, it must be because of the drugs i was on.
I like this version. Good job Rick Derringer. When I saw his appearance as a younger person in this video, I kind of laughed with amusement, he sort of looks like Rhandy Roads with the hair and face if you know Rhandys past photos.
I heard them play back in the day LIVE! (1974) I was close enuff to the sound stage to hear Rick back stage YELL between encores "DAMMIT! Always same shit as yesterday! Ain' nuthin' but yesterdays!" I was taken that he had a HEAVY NYC(?) accent.
Everyone keeps messaging me about dives, octaves, right strings, and even damn blue notes!
Its rediculous! He missed the note. Period. So (with respect) Rick chose this one damn time to hit that off note and not do it at any other time in the song?
Dont think so. Jesus, he's not Jimi fucking Hendrix guys!
@AceOfHeart2012 Sammy Hagar. Ronnie Montrose had left the band right after the album "they only come out at night" and one performance on ABC's IN CONCERT series.
@rickyschultzusa Right. I do remember that Montrose played guitar on that record and Derringer produced it. I'm just wondering who the guitar player is playing the white SG in the video.
How do you do the bend at :40 you ask? Just pull down on the low G to A or abouts. Bends can be done without a whammy bar. Most bends are done without it.
@strothers456 No, I didn't hear about blue notes from a drummer, I heard it out of some guitar magazine many years ago. Sounded like a good excuse for me, so I've used it many times to cover up my mistakes......LOL, actually. I believe I heard it from Robin Ford. I think he was he was talking about playing blues and jazz together.
True story---about 4 years ago I ran saw Rick Derringer at the Grand ole Opry just standing outside before it started.the lady with him was stunning. I didn't bother him but later emailed him and he replied in a nice note it was indeed him and his wife. I had seen him just days before on an oldies show on PBS is the only reason I knew who he was.
There's a terrific interview Edgar Winter vividly remembers this as a very weird moment on stage. Rick Derringer was not scheduled to play this song but simply forced his way on completely unrehearsed.
@Solidguitar1993 Rick has played many different guitars. Fenders, Gibsons, you name it. He has also had many custom guitars made for him.
