The Crickets played at the Iowa Straw poll last month (for Sen. Rick Santorum)-I checked out a few minutes. They (including Sonny) sounded tired (this was 11:30AM)-it was sad to witness.
Seeing Sonny play and sing in such a laid- bare fashion, makes you realise how great he really is. These guys came from an era of self-discovery that will never be repeated.
Sonny Curtis is one of the sweetest , most genuine men it's been my pleasure to meet / Besides this song he has written many classics like "I Fought The Law "."Walk Right Back ", "The Straight Life ""More Than I Can Say " and "I'm No Stranger To The Rain ". A huge talent ,he never really has got the recognition he deserves. Waylon Jenning summed it up when he said that all he ever wanted to be was Sonny Curtis.!
@DOGPOUNDBREW Buddy was a genuine man & I'm afraid he'd disagree with your opinion, & that son is all it is. an opinion. Buddy wouldn't put his friend down like you just did critiquing his friend. I would say shame on you but, that would be unsporting of me. so good day to you sir.greetings from NY baby.
@DOGPOUNDBREW , Sorry, brother, but if I can see what a fabulous guitarist Sonny is, maybe you can. Open your mind and ears and you might learn something. I know you'll be all pissed when you read this, but get over it. As for Sonny not being able to sing, it's all about communicating and in this song he tells it right to your heart.
These guys had covers of Beatle muxic in 1960s or 1970s, as I once owned their album. It's rough when your front man dies whether you're a Cricket who played at the Apollo Theatre accidentally or The Doors.
Sonny Curtis once blanked me in the 70's in a closed London club..there was him, me and around 6 others...I wonder if he remembers ? It's a bummer when you discover your heroes have feet of clay.
Thanks for posting this clip!! Buddy was the reason I first picked up a guitar in '79. Then about 20 years ago, I started singing with a band in Europe, doing Buddy's songs along with others from that era...and I had a ton of fun with it. If you google "Billy Holly" you'll see I caused some confusion as to Buddy's name, as in "Billy Holly died in 1959," etc. The audience for that is smaller now but I relish the chance to sing whenever I can. Buddy and his music WILL live forever!
