Farner re-writes history as he likes to do. Blues artists like Jimi Hendrix were a hit in England, first, then America. The USA wasn't interested in the blues until the Brits appreciated it first. Agreed, the rock n' roll form is entirely American, but if you grew up in the mid-late 60's, the bands you were listening to were overwhelmingly British. America made rock, Britain made it roll. "Smoke Pot" is the best he can do for a Beatles lyric ? And he didn't advocate pot himself ? C'mon, Mark.

He touched on it Beatles singing " Smoke pot " We'll there's a whole lot more going on behind the scenes of the Beatles and their Involvement w/ the Tavistock Institute out of London . Short story , Beatles were the spearhead for introducing Drug Culture and everything associated with it , Long Hair , Hippies etc etc .... None of it was spontaneous .

Farner is 100% correct, America owns Rock-n-Roll. The part he left out was America also owns Blues, Jazz, Funk, R&B, Soul, and Gospel.

@atty1chgo Mark Farner is not a living legend. Grand Funk Railroad made one song I really like: 'I'm Your Captain/ Closer to Home was a fantastic song. Apart from that GFR just weren't all that great a Band. They were more a Pop band than a Rock band..oh am I ever going to burn for saying that; but it's true. Deep Purple, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Blackmore, the Yardbirds, Ten Years After with Alvin Lee, Pink Floyd, Savoy Brown, The Beatles, were all such cool bands.

Sabbath's first album..Black Sabbath. Then there was Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple's Machine Head and Made in Japan.

Many people soon forgot about Grand Funk but there will always be a place in my memory for

the strength of the new and powerful Grand Funk and Grand Funk Railroad. It's too bad they never really progressed too far. The whole interview was a ego trip for Mark.

@Starpass - I see your angle of thought, and by today's standards, it's easy to see why you feel that way. During their best years (69-73), GFR was a heavyweight contender!! Their music was hard hitting, with a groove like no other. They were outstanding, far better than they even knew! They could have gone so much further had they built on their original formula, but they instead went towards poppy mainstream poop and racked up the hits, and lost a LOT of their old fans along the way.

The Beatles, the Stones and the Beach Boys had a thing going where say: the Beach Boys would put out a song while the Beatles and the Stones waited till the Beach Boys got there song up in the charts, then either the Stones or the Beatles would put out a song. They traded on and off like this to maximize sales, a good idea at the time. Beatlemania really was a trip and a half.

To be alive in those days was a great time to be alive.

I have always been a huge GFR fan, but if Mark is dissing the Beatles for references to pot, that's certainly hypocritical. Just listen to the Live 71 Tour album, where he says "I want to dedicate this song to everybody out there smoking marijuana"... Guess selective memory helped him forget about that huh...!

There is no such thing as American English. It was the Americans who butchered the English language..like..I want to ax you something. The word is ask, not ax.

It's roof not ruff like so many Americans say. The English gave us the English language. The Americans have English slang.

@atty1chgo The Brits use the word 'Bloody or Bloody Hell' the same as we use 'Fuckin Right!, or Fuckin Right eh? I am born and raised Canadian. The words are slang. We mostly used the Queen's English which is proper English but we use slang too. If the truth be known it is America who is becoming a shit country because of the Luciferian NWO. England will also be changed by the New World Order and so will Canada. If you didn't know it was Hitler who wanted a New Order, or a New World Order.
