when he flicks for his middle B (sits right on the top line), does he use the A thumb key or the one above it? or just in general, does anyone know which is usually used?
Generally, the C key (the one above the A thumb key) is used for B, as it has a less fuzzy tone. But either works, and depends on the context of the piece.
thanks, yeah that's the one i been using, but i heard it both ways, so i wanted to get some opinions. yeah, i don't know why it has negative ratings...
..... I agree, Milan Turkovic is an inspirational world-class Bassoonist who has raised the level of the instrument........ Only the jealous "fricking" hacks anonymously register their vindictive ratings.
Look, when Ray Pizzi and Paul Hanson have nothing but praise, while the students are eviscerating this LIVE performance, there's something wrong. I can't believe you kids are comparing studio recordings to live ones! Get a clue from the aforementioned pros, and quit debating which master is better; you're only proving your own mediocrity.
whoa, didn't think i'd start such a discussion when i commented on this video some time ago. turkovic is without any doubt a superb bassoon player. but sometimes thunemann is even better. this rendition of vivaldi is absolutely great - you think it couldn't be better. but then you listen to thunemann's recording, hear all the ornaments he adds, and you see: it IS better. so, i'm not against turkovic, but i just love thunemann.
ah, yes. we love our youtube... but the sound quality is almost always lacking. i am an unaccomplished bassoonist of 10 years, and must say that Turkovic is amazing and should receive nothing but our respect! Tusen Takk, Turkovic!
I don't know what the fuss is all about-Milan Turkovic is a slamming classical bassoonist! He is one of the most accomplished bassoonists in the world and he sounds incredible. Arguing over relatively small stylistic points in the ivory tower that most classical musicians put themselves into is somewhat pointless outside the conservatory. He sounds great-I love his playing. I feel honored that the one time he heard me play jazz he complimented me on my playing. That meant SO much to me!
I love reading the discussions about these bassoonists on youtube! Eiter some of the people who comment in here are professionals that we admire or some are really confused individuals. But Turkovic is a player that everyone should hope to one day be at his level. Anyway has anyone thought about the fact that the sound for this recording is terrible and maybe what you are hearing isn't at all what it sounded like. I have heard his cd recording of this and it is many times better!!!
Along with some of the people here, I think that Thunemann is superior. Nevertheless Turkovic has a wonderful tone and brilliant technical ability. I suppose that his musicality may be less than his other qualities but that is not to say that it is not still very good.
People, you shouldn't be rating this comment a thumbs down. It is his opinion, and it is an intelligent opinion. He explains why he thinks that Klaus Thunemann is better, in a very polite way. People should be giving him a thumbs up for his honesty.

I am a bassoonist from Croatia. I'm Croatia's bassoon champion. i won the first place on the competition, and the only thing you need to have for a good musician is the hearty musicality, u need to enjoy. i'm actually 13 years old because i tought you tube won't accept younger then 18 so i lied, croatian my professor teached me to " musicate" a lot. You can be a perfect tehnical musician but u need to be a real musician. That's my philosophy. And that's the problem with Turkovic.
As different as they are, Thunemann's runs are cleaner, his interpretations are a bit better as are his ornamentation. Sound is a matter of preference I guess. I like Thunemann when he's at his richest, say in the Mozart Bassoon/Cello concerto.
costythehot if there is no one thats best then there is no number one in anything meaning everything has to be number 2? there is always number 1 such as tiger woods he is number aint he? the best?
This is NOT sports!....it is by far a silly comparison! This is ART! Who can say one's art is better than others? It is different....there is no one keeping score! You can say it is at a very high level. But anyway...whatever makes you happy!
comparing thunemann and turcovic is like comparing a mercedes with a porsche? just not the same and hasn't to be the same. Or do you compare gould with schiff? ... I know both from stages and i know the concerto played by them. why has somebody to be the best? in german you say: "geschmacksache" interpretation -
Sorry, for my two cents, but Milan Turkovic IS the best in the world. Thunemann might be a better instructor, but Milan is the best in my opinion! Remember: Vibrato is not at the core of the Viennese school! And by the way, Judy LeClerk (NY PHIL)is at the same level as Thunemann!
Her name first of all is Judith Leclair! And as to being at the same level as Thunemann... Go ask someone in Europe or Asia if they have heard of her. And then go ask someone anywhere in the world if they have heard of Thunemann. Just a little test! ;) Not to count the number of prizes he has won and the number of CD's he has recorded.
And as for being the best in the world, can you REALLY say that someone IS truly the best? at everything?
Do you really think JUDITH LECLAIR is at the same level?! yes she is technically good but her tone isnt. neither is her musicality. i agree with costy, way more people know of thunemann than they do leclair.
the right word is "recorded", and the person in the video is Milan Turkovic, one of the world's best bassoon players - except for Klaus Thunemann, of course! ;-)
@grahss69 I really like the way your bassoon sounds. I have a school student Schreiber and it sounds different, makes a strange noise like a harrumph, is it because of the bassoon or because of the reed or is the way I blow? can you please give me an advice?
@Lkiduta You should like the way his bassoon sounds. He is Milan Turkovic, one of the greatest bassoonists ever. He is most likely to be playing on an instrument that costs several times that of a student Schreiber. That being said, he has made a few recordings of technically demanding pieces using a baroque instrument. The difference you hear in sound is not only the result of your instrument and reed, but also the way you are playing. I would recommend taking lessons if you can! Good luck!

Both will, technically, work, but in my experience the C key (right above the A key) is more reliable, more stable.
And why on earth does your comment have negative ratings?
