It seems like every country BUT this one (America) has most of the population speaking at least one additional language well enough to get by, and here he is picking up words from ANOTHER language just walking around. I really want to learn Japanese and become an exception to the rule...though it IS very difficult to go from English to Japanese as they are fundamentally different in pretty much every way, so you have to re-learn language altogether.

It's not really that difficult. When you have a good memory and can easily memorize pictures, it's very easy. My mother tongue is German, I'm also fluent in English and dutch. Learned French and now Japanese. If you want to learn it and are passionate about it, go for it.

If you have a passion for learning and you aren't someone who wants to learn the entire language in two minutes, then go for it. I've been teaching myself japanese since was in tenth grade and now I can understand pretty basic stuff. It'll be hard at first, but once you get down the basics, Japanese is REALLY easy. They often use English loan words as well. Good luck!
