As an artist in both work and personal life, I have been feeling a huge void..... I feel as if I am running on empty and this song seems to explain what is going on in my soul. I finally understood this song this morning, when I did, the tears started to flow....
It's a little hard to define. As I understand it, a "cool remove" is a dispassionate step away from the intensity of sensation and emotion. It is both a protective and isolating distance. That's what makes the image of the window work so well in the video; a "cool remove" is like watching the world through thin glass, having sight and sound just a little muffled.
Does anyone have another view?
This is such a beautiful, haunting, solemn song. I have to admit I cry every time I hear it.
This is especially meaningful to me because the very first time I ever saw Shawn Colvin was the old TNN Network...when they played real music, at an outdoor concert broadcast live, Mary Chapin Carpenter was singing Lucinda Williams song "Passionate Kisses", and there was a skinny short haired girl singing backup...and the voice was beyond belief...yep, it was Shawn Colvin...and I was smitten right from the first time I saw her. Later she was on Austin City, did "Steady On".INCREDIBLE girl:-)
Shawn Colvin and Greg Brown are great friends, and play at the annual Kate Wolf Memorial Festival in Northern California frequently, so it's no surprise that she'd "cover" this great tune of his on "Cover Girl".
"Cover Girl" is a wonderful CD. Miss Colvin has wonderful taste. Tom Waits, Willis Alan Ramsey, David Byrne, Steve Earle, plus somebody I'd never heard of Miss Judee Sill's song "There's a rugged road". Recommend you get it.
Excellent! I bought her "Cover Girl" CD some years ago after hearing this song on one radio station that played (they changed formats!) little-known-but-outstanding stuff like that one. There are other great cuts on "Cover Girl."
As the man says, she makes others' songs her own. Great video - if you didn't know Mary was from Noo Joisey her 'One Coal Remove' is a bit of a clincher. I love that little nod from Shawn at the end - the eyebrows have it..
Although she did not write this song -- it is a song by Greg Brown from her Cover Girl album -- she makes it her own, as she does with a lot of the songs on that album. Thanks for posting the video, which I have never seen.
Actually I'm a year late replying to this , as I've just noticed it . I asked because a guy at the barras recommended this singer to me some years ago . I thought it was you .
Can't stop playing this it is fabulous

@gurlsingerfan FYI- "Passionate Kisses" was written by MCC- one the best singer songwriters of our time.

@hooliamc2 It was written by Lucinda Williams but I agree that MCC is one of the best songwriters of not just our time but any time

Other lady is the brilliant Mary Chapin. They sing alot together. Check out Mary's " Stones in the road" album, it's great.
