That guy is not using the advantage of distance that the bo staff is known for. I hate demonstrations and say get some padded tonfas and a padded bo staff to go free style on eachother and you will see those useless techniques go out the window as the fight starts to look more like two kids swinging wildly at eachother in the backyard.
The techniques are not useless, if you know how to fight with a Bo staff and take the concepts from these demo style techniques it works very well. Behind every planned out demo move, there is a concept. The point is not to use that move in that specific situation every time that situation happens. The point is to learn the concept and use it in a fight however you need to. It's not as pretty as the demo, but the people who use the concepts in real fights win, not wild swinging.
@BathosMetalDrummer tonfa is just the internationally, or moreover the western accepted name, it is different based on which dialect of Okinawan you're using and one is no more right than the other.
