  • Dr. John follows and pays tribute to his mentor Fess (Professor Longhair) in his own way but no matter where he is or where he plays, it's always got that New Orleans sound. I've heard him many times in NYC but he REALLY rocks when he's "home" in New Orleans, Amazing difference!.

  • Man, Mac's so good he even makes lame English musicians sound passable!

  • @PortieBhoy Jools Holland and Eric Clapton are not lame.

  • @PortieBhoy Tosser.

  • Who else could not help swaying? ;)

  • Love Eric Clapton's reaction at the end of this....just shakes his head at how awesome Dr John is

  • Third dislike here. MAd

  • Dr. John...the real Piano Man

  • His solo and about 2.35 is so awesome!

  • a lot of good memories while listening to Dr John over the years.....

  • I guess his best friend jim hit the dislike button twice.. this is incredible!

  • massive problem towards the end 'If I don't do it somebody as well'... BUT THAT IMPRO is astonishing!

  • @quizpubbob It's "If I don't do it, somebody else will". There's no impro here, and no problem.

  • @ColonelVandal Respect for the correction 'If I don't do it, somebody else will'. What's your logic in the bit at the end not been improvisation. How did you come to that conclusion. My logic was: it's not on the actual record; and as far as I know he doesn't keep it the same for every performance.

  • @quizpubbob My logic is FOR it being improv! Your logic is against!

  • Thanks for Vid......Loved it, cannot stop playing Dr John, best performance I've seen....and what a treat Eric Clapton to boot as well !!!!

  • there are musicians from New Orleans and there are musicians from everywhere else

  • I'm the second person to dislike this. HOW YOU GOIN ACT?

  • Probably can't read a note either, that talent and skill has been aquired from gigging constantly and rubbing shoulders with the pros since he was a teenager, a fucking genius to say the least!!!

  • Looks like Dumbledore.

  • Dr John is a consummate pro in the piano! We are seeing him tomorrow - right here at the Rose Theatre in Brampton - a Living Legend!

  • After 'such a night'…that's the best song I ever heard which can describe what left over!

    Swing a cariolate!

  • Lol! I remember watching this NYE '96 :) Awsome! I love how Eric Clapton shakes his head with incredulity at the end...says a lot about how Brilliant Dr. John is :)

  • Great music cant wait to see you perform at Dauphi Island Alabama THANK YOU...

  • FINALLY being inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame. About time!

  • @karinablacktie I know! Theres alot of people that they seem to over look forever

  • 131 573 and no thumbs down, knock on wood

  • now, that's music.

  • He (and Eric) did an awesome version of Got To Be A Better World Somewhere during this session - anyone got the video of that?

  • I will always think of The Last Waltz when I hear this song.

  • Every since I Watched "The Last Waltz", I have really loved everything Dr. John does plus, of course, Eric Clapton. Dr. John is truly outstanding on the piano and he sings good too.

  • When I watched this I went "Holy shit!" and then I went "Holy Shit that's Clapton!" and then I read the description, felt like an idiot, and watched this three or four more times because Dr. John is just awesome.

  • Dr. John on Spindrift Records from 1984 (Spin 107), "Such A Night - Live In London" with Richie Brunton on lead, Kieran o´Connor on drums, Tony Uther percussion,Pete Scott Bass and Diz Watson on additional piano gives u the Ultimate mac Rebennack-sound. Brilliant - and the version of Honeydripper is outa´sight...

  • God that opening chord sequence is gorgeous! Love songs that don't start in the tonic (home key). :-)

  • Wherever Dr. John goes, he brings a little bit of New Orleans with him. He just exudes the very spirit of the Crescent City.

  • This guy's a fucking hoss.

  • Dedicated with Love to Bob Robertson of NO who loves leading Australians astray. Loveya Bob! And I love Eric Clapton.

  • geat version

  • Dark night at Bickershaw - wow

  • You can just feel the respect in that room ,at that moment for the Dr.

  • How is this not included on one of this artist (Dr, Johns) albums? Its one of the best performances i've seen on Jools Holland, saw it years ago when i was a kid & it used to randomly come into my head all i knew was the starting lyric with the honky tonky piano opening

  • @tvrulesnation It is included on a couple of his albums. On a rather early album "In The Right Place" released on Atlantic Records in 1973. And on a newer live album "Right Place, Right Time. Live at Tipitina's - Mardi Gras '89"

  • love this man and his music

  • Always seems the perfect stupid american to me...but he was good with this on The Band's "Last Waltz"...

  • such damn fine soul

  • This guy is such a legend!

  • Was the Eric Clapton at 1:30!!!

  • @HOODYWOODRECORDS

    yes, that's him :)

  • @HOODYWOODRECORDS That is Clapton. He and Mick Jagger helped produce one of Dr. John's albums back in the early 70s.

  • @frank47hammer It is rather the other way around. He has been studio musicians on a lot of records, including Clapton and Rolling Stones. It is not too much to say that he was a musician's musician. They all loved his piano playing, and no wonder, he is brilliant, and carries with him a lot of knowledge about the old music from and around New Orleans.

  • @r810s yep, that's true. Clapton and Jagger didn't help produce but just contributed to his album The Sun, Moon & Herbs (1971). Atlantic Records.

  • I'm kinda drunk right now, but is that Eric Clapton on Guitar at 2:03?

  • 2:88 this is just fantastic

  • Just one of my many favorites you do Dr.John ! Thank You

  • I dedicate this to my brother Ted, who died suddenly and was burried one week ago today, He loved this song.

  • @Cyberella1000 My condolences to your family. I had the same thing happen to my family. Great dedication! Ted listening from above.

  • Dedicated to our brother Ted who died suddenly and was burried one week ago today. We shall forever have the memory of him dancing around the room to this song.

  • One of the best reasons for having satellite TV is the Jools show.

  • @jrothke what channel does this come on>?

  • BEST OF THE BEST [][][][]

  • This one's for Brother Ted who passed away suddenly yesterday.

  • What's the guy in the background doing with the piano? Is that the leader, other than Eric Clapton?

  • he sounds better now then he did then.

  • he sounds better now then he did then.

  • good old mac, haven't seen him in a while, hope he is OK

  • A New Orleans legend, this man is ...

  • TG for Jools - real music. Look what his show did for Paolo Nutini!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Paolo's version is great too

  • Show!

  • Comment removed

  • In a class by himself as a NO Jazz performer but I wish he'd play more and sing less. His piano solos are incredible!

  • @MultiPeteT Hey, man, I agree, but I don't think he could do it without singing. That's where the money is. His left hand is absolutely amazing. It's all about ensemble playing with N.O. jazz. I know, I used to play it in San Francisco for years. If only we had someone like Dr. John.

  • Great player and singer. The piano rocks!

  • Dr.John is my most favorite piano player EVER!!! ...Well along with Anthony Burger and Gordon Mote :-D

Not sure which one I like better...Doc's got soo much soul...gotta love that!!!

  • Ronnie Barron was on of the Dr.s friends,he was pretty good also,I thought, the both of them are 2 of the best New Orleans has ever produced,Just my thought.

  • Perhaps the best performance I've ever seen on Jools show.

  • @halo4484 DAMN RIGHT

  • How many keys may his hands can toch?

    88 or 92 or 97?

  • I always like the version from"Trippin Live" But I gotta say those horns will

grab ya in this version....I think this more in keeping with the good doctor's roots.

  • Absolute perfection.

  • saw Dr john performing this song yesterday..sun oct 11th here in ny soooooooo amazing 2 super greats together an amazing day and sorry but the version from yesterday was the bestttt ever

  • bass0111 is right-- the version from The Last Waltz is 100x better

  • As great as this is, it's a bit too pristine fir the inherent grit of the tune. Check out this 1976 version with The Band at YouTube's /watch?v=Yu4Fg5Me-z0 . YA mon ...

    Mike H.

  • agree that is a better version

  • deffo!

  • how do I find this on youtube please??

  • Sorry, it seems to have been removed.

  • To those who minused me: the lineup to kiss my ass forms on the left. It's that line over there of people on their knees. Now, kisaten, you morons -- check your low IQs at the door, then check out the video I recommended.

  • most of us did, and we still prefer this one, so shut up you moron, it has nothing to do with IQ, it is taste in music! IQ has no part of it you moron! Just because you say that version is better doesn't mean we all have to agree with you. NOW, here is my opinion and your going to read it and do nothing about it, i prefer this one, DEAL WITH IT!!

  • ROTFL!!!

  • if you notice the guitarist is eric clapton. awsome song cant get it out of my head!

  • HA! he got stuck on the lyric!

    i love dr. john.

  • does anybody know what other songs they perform on that night?

  • dont think the Doc played anything else on the Milenium eve prog.

  • always brings a smile to my face ... if I don't do it, somebody else will.

  • If you get a chance, do not miss Mac's autobio. funniest thing in history. miracle he's not dead from overdose

  • class, when was this on? i missed it!

  • 31st Dec 1999, Jools Hootnanny of course, a programme made up of some of the best performances from the previous decade, looks like 1996 from vid info

  • Dr. J is a pimp

  • @jaguar1712 Ya! ,but he is a good pimp!!

  • @jaguar1712 Yeah, but ain't he good at it????

  • @jaguar1712 And, a damn fine one!...

  • Never undrated in my book. What they don't know is thier loss,

  • Dr John a true legend and under rated in his time. Check him out on The Last Waltz with The Band too for a slightly more raw version

  • Legendary for sure!!!!!

It's great that Dr. John is coming to the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival this August!!

  • Love it how the crowd is almost sitting in with the musicians:) Was probably a good one to be at!!

  • Wonderful, Dr John is the man!

  • i love how hootenany is one of the tags for this video lol

  • Well, well, well... it's never too late to meet The Doctor!

    Bonaroo!

  • what a find, i have never heard of Dr John before, but this is terrific

  • There is a live version that starts with a sax

solo. Can anyone help me find that version?

  • I have an audio version of that, off the CD Live Trippin', but don't know of a video of it.

  • @clamdraggin I think his best version of this song is on DVD The Last Waltz. I think all the other great musicians inspired the Dr.

  • @clamdraggin I think that version is performed with "The Band"

  • Yes, it's his best song ever! ;)

  • For a brilliant extended piano solo, I highly recommend volume one of "The Best of Mountain Stage" cd (Blue Plate). The good doctor goes all out for about 6 minutes or so and leaves the audience begging for more.

  • My God! Eric Clapton Is playing aswell!

  • For me, his best version of this song, love the piano run at the end, brilliant! Note his snakes head walking stick leaning against the right end of the piano

  • I second that!

    The best-ever...

  • My favorite Dr. John song of all time. Thank you for posting this fantastic performance!

  • You will love 'It's alright now' which can be found on the New Orleans Funk Experience-pure genius!
