People, when Zaraki fights Ichigo for the first time, we come to know that Zaraki's zanpakutou stays in released form. But, since he doesn't even know its name, he cannot use any of its powers and has to rely on hie reiatsu. So, it's a shikai used as a katana (not even used as a zanpakutou).

@viktormayer No, Zaraki's zanpakuto is always in sealed form. He can't reach shikai or bankai because he doesn't know his zanpakuto's name. Ichigo is the one who keeps his zanpakuto in shikai form, because of his sheer spiritual pressure.

Watch the full fight between Ichigo and Kenpachi; he (Kenpachi) directly says that his sword has always been in its release form (I think before he even got a hold of the Zanpakuto), but since he doesn't know its name, he can't use any of its power. Furthermore, Kenpachi doesn't view his Zanpakuto as anything more than a fighting tool, so he doesn't even try to learn its name. (long explanation is long)

I don't get what's with the Kenpachi fanboyism. He's not even up to par with the elite captains like Yamamoto, Shunsui, Unohana, and Jushiro. Kenpachi with shikai or bankai wouldn't be too scary since Ichigo could always just beat the crap out of him with his own bankai or his hollow mask. <

Better yet, what would happen to Bleach if Kenpachi have his mask on along with his Bankai? Not only it would cancel the show, but it'd get Aizen shitting his diaper full and begging for mercy.

Byakuya is more intelligent and skilled. But kenpachi is probably the strongest captain besides Yama, shunsui and Unohana. I'd say their equal if compared. Then we have the fact that Kenpachi can learn his bankai (though it wil never happen) and if you look at the title of the next episode it says pursui byakuya, so byakuya was going to lose the battle why would he else run away. But the rest is for the devs to decide ;)

Yama is Yamamoto the old man, Shunsui is the guy with the pink captain haori (jacket in other words :P). Unohana is the female captain of squad 4. I don't think you don't watch bleach too often ? ^^ The new filler saga is really interesting :)

you're forgeting Aizen...though he isn't a captain anymore heh. but counts as one. But still, i think the squad 7 captain, Komamura has more brute strength than Kenpachi. I like Zaraki, but even Tite Kubo says he's the weakest in the overall since he's quite stupid and has no Kidou and is the 2nd slowest captain, the slowest is Komamura (figures xD)
