Funny how we don't think of the simplest things. I like your idea of putting ice in the ziplock bags. I will definitely remember to fill my freezers up with those if another hurricane strikes. God forbid.
Gustav hit Baton Rouge on September 1st. We were supposed to move into our new apartment on September 1st. Instead, my wife got to see what two guys who haven't been able to bathe for 3 days smell like when we stayed at my brother's house until the electricity came back on. And we were lucky, most of South Louisiana didn't get electricity back for 2 weeks.
thanks for the tips. i like freezer idea. last year when my town froze over we were without power for 3weeks... i left and forgot to empty the freezer... boy did it stink when i got back. couldve used this video! haha and yea... nice shorts, they look good on you
Your wife might want to do a little research on Aspartame (NutraSweet). It's really nasty stuff that breaks down into rubbing alcohol and formaldehyde (or embalming fluid) once it hits your bloodstream. It does truly horrible things to your body and strangely enough, it causes people to gain weight. Don't take my word for it though, the information is all over the internet.
The documentary "sweet misery" is a good place to start.
I thank you so much for sharing this. While we don't hurricanes up here in Wisconsin we do have blizzards and floods and good information like this is wonderful to see. We're setting up for winter and I needed this video to make me remember that weather can shut us down fast so we better be prepared.
Good luck and God's grace to you and your kin, Brother. Looks like you've got the bases covered.
I like the barbecue strategy and if you've been through this before, you know how psychologically beneficial it is to host your friends for a cook-out. Maybe the usual amenities ain't there, but there are thousands of others living in motels, getting on each others nerves and eating McDonald's.
That window is on the west side of the house. That blanket stops the evening sunlight from coming into the house, so the house stays cooler, and my electricity bill stays lower.
My wife also takes baby pictures for people, and the blanket is a back drop.
@survivalistboards If you are not happy with the blanket being on that window, you could try to tint the window. We did a DIY window tinting on the west side of our house(actually are working on every window of our house) and it looks great, my curtains are no longer fading and the window sill is no longer warping from the heat.
make sure you cut off your own power before it goes off so you don't get a surge and fry your home electronics. I hear the will be no power for 2 weeks. that food will go bad quick if that cooler has no electricity.
Diet coke contains Aspartame and it is a carcinogen that turns into Formaldehyde (and phenylalanine) in the body. Be weary of what you put into your body.
I have seen those store bought candles-in-a-glass bust open from heat. The candle was placed in an old pan, so the glass and wax didn't go very far. I'm sure that the jars your wife uses are a lot better.
Hit Florida?? Where did you hear that from? Hurricane Gustav is going to hit Louisiana and go into Texas. The projected path puts the eye of the hurricane about 75 miles north of my location.

Its a joke. The comment was supposed to lighten things up during a serious situation.
