Free will only seem real because we are not aware of the reasons behind our choices. You ar the product of your genetics and your life experiences. Every choice you make is based on those two things. In any given situation you really only have one choice and you make that choice. you may think about other choices but there really is only one. You will always make the same choice. We are basically organic machines running an AI program.
I tend to look at it like this.. Either there is no free will, and everything is just *fate*, and then everything is just a *coincidence*. Or there is free will, and therefore there are *conspiracies* in the world. For instance people who conspire for global control. Has to be one way or the other.

@zombierobopirate That's not entirely true. Our brains store information, such as those mentioned in the video, in the form of electrical impulses. These impulses move in a certain way based on our past experience. Option 1: As you say, they are only limited. The only problem is, we can't consciously control which way these impulses go, so the remainder of our "will" is mere chance. Option 2: Chance doesn't really exist and everything that happens in the future stems from the past.
I know you are not arguing for determinism, but rather against free will, but in a deterministic outlook humans are no more then complex rocks. I understand we can't go up to a rock and scream at it to change direction as it is falling down a hill, but we can do this to a human. One day as I was thinking about free will and being programmed, I kind of saw my mind as being like this computer that I was working on. In it's thinking system it had "bios" to run basic functions, doss to run background programs like favorite things and automatic responses, and Windows for a kind of conscience response process. Surely environment is a very big part of who you'll become but free will is not an illusion nor are we purely a product of our surroundings.
I wish people would stop saying there is no free will, because if you allow there to be, then there shall be, but if you keep repeating theres no free will, then you will believe as such, thus there will be non! i.e. only you as an individual have the power to change that within you, you can not change anything else till you take the first step inside your self! WE DO HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE, and it must start NOW!
This is something I can agree with you, Ann. True, we don't have free will here, not in this reality. Since the day we are born, we have been programmed like robots. Education, religions, media, laws, regulations, are just a few of examples. We are constantly told what to think, what to do, and how to behave. You start expressing your own way, and you get jumped on by the majority in the form of condemnation, ridiculing, and bullying. A prison that we cannot see, feel and taste.

The programming that is in us - humanity - reminds me again of Biblical saying that "the sins of the father being visited on the next seven generations". Abuse and programming works like that. Free will only seem real because we are not aware of the reasons behind our choices. You ar the product of your genetics and your life experiences. Every choice you make is based on those two things. In any given situation you really only have one choice and you make that choice. you may think about other choices but there really is only one. You will always make the same choice. We are basically organic machines running an AI program.

@zombierobopirate That's not entirely true. Our brains store information, such as those mentioned in the video, in the form of electrical impulses. These impulses move in a certain way based on our past experience. Option 1: As you say, they are only limited. The only problem is, we can't consciously control which way these impulses go, so the remainder of our "will" is mere chance. Option 2: Chance doesn't really exist and everything that happens in the future stems from the past.

I know you are not arguing for determinism, but rather against free will, but in a deterministic outlook humans are no more then complex rocks. I understand we can't go up to a rock and scream at it to change direction as it is falling down a hill, but we can do this to a human. I have several games and everyday I will make a different decision. Sometimes I am stuck between 2 where I have no preference so I pick at random. For example a man raised in a dangerous environment grows a defence mechanism within him. One day as I was thinking about free will and being programmed, I kind of saw my mind as being like this computer that I was working on. In it's thinking system it had "bios" to run basic functions, doss to run background programs like favorite things and automatic responses, and Windows for a kind of conscience response process. I wondered what would happen if I could re-install my brain's operating system with no 3rd party software. Believe it or not, I think I'm figuring it out....peace

The world and creation can be a beautiful thing to see with no preconceived notions. I remember being a kid and having no particular opinion of very many things and so most things were kind of cool to me. I saw a buffalo have a calf once and I was amazed at how the mother knew exactly what to do to take care of herself and her calf. Somehow as you grow up you stop being amazed. I always thought adults were nuts when I was kid but then I grew up and became part of the insanity. I became them!

Self Direction is not the same as free will.
Free Will is about being able to choose from a palette of decisions in each moment, and each decision will have ramifications and consequences. You are able to choose from this range of choices freely, but the options are limited and based on opinion.
Self Direction is about not having to limit yourself by having to make predefined choices based on your past experiences and based on your mental fears or beliefs of limitation.

I was just explaining my wife about this yesterday. THERE IS FREE WILL. You can worship God or worship the devil. You can live in LOVE or in fear. It is all up to the person experiencing.

Me myself, several systems of control were trying to program me. That in itself woke me up. Why some many systems and points of view? Why can't any adult offer me a real answer? Eventually you do figure out that you choose to be the way you are. Learn to feel and control your feelings is the first step. Choosing what to do with your Self is the next step.

We get most of our knowledge from the outside world, but so much of it can contradict itself. And eventually one can figure out that there isn't just one answer here, but many.

I can't say i fully disagree, but think of it like this: two plants are each fed equal amounts of water and nutrients, yet one grows much larger than the other (sorry if it's too vague). People aren't born as blank slates, modern neurology pretty much proves that. Some people will have the tendency to be believe in a god because they are basically told to, some will be sceptic and won't believe in god even though they are told too. Surely environment is a very big part of who you'll become but free will is not an illusion nor are we purely a product of our surroundings.

When you are in the program you think you are the one making the choices and decisions - this is not you as the being directing yourself, it is you following, acting out of, and speaking from, programs of the mind. It gives the illusion of being free will when you don't see the reality of it. So as this you ARE the dead stone, because it is nothing but programmed systems, not you as self movement and expression
