Apperantly u do not know anything of photography- So u share something with Rankin. Support him? Yes teach him bout lighting, camera equipment and how to cominicate with production companies all over the world. rankin is a douschbag- nothin more or less- RANKIN SUX A TRILLION TIME! A fat fool!
All of you that talk about technically better photographers than Rankin are missing the point. Rankin is an extremely capable photographer, better than most in the country. He has versatility, there isn't a Rankin label on everything he shoots, and he just shoots what he likes the look of. He is also a very successful businessman, and has built himself up from nothing to what he is today, which is another part of being a photographer. It's a combination of more than just technical ability.
mth202 Following your bold comment I spent some time looking at the work of many of the photographers that you recommended and although competent I could not see what you felt made them strand out from the crowd. Rankin on the other hand does have a style and an ability to create an eye-catching image. I think his reputation is justified
Malmokber... He shoots against plain backgrounds, so it's a case of key light, fill, background lights There's nothing special in any of his lighting work simply because such setups don't require anything complex. Real lighting skill comes with the flagging and positioning required to shoot complex room sets. Any of the fashion photographers I mention below employ far more sophisticated techniques by nature of what they shoot. Glen Luchford in particular is famed for his lighting work.
Honestly, how this man can be considered a master of photography is beyond me. Anyone working in the fashion, portrait or advertising scene could name 200, possibly 400 better photographers.
If you really want to know how to photograph people try Julian Dufort, Larry Fink or Larry Sultan. And in the UK... Blinkk and Nadav Kander. For fashion the list is endless: Glen Luchford, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, Nick Knight, Craig McDean, Mert and Marcus, Vincent Peters, Miles Aldridge........
As we know photography is a very subjective thing.
All the photog's you named are indeed very good but IMO most of them don't use the quality of lighting that Rankin uses. That is not to say they are bad! But looking through the names, I just do not not see the variety that Rankin possess.
@mth202 I'm not a famous tog, but I think some of my work is better than his. I can take great pictures and have done a few lesser campaigns, but I feel it's difficult to break into the higher profile scene due to the fact that sometimes, the people in the decision making seats, just wont give you a chance and when I look at some of the work of people who are where I want to be, I just don't know where i'm going wrong???
w.t.f ... thats a bit mean .... i think hes a grate photographer and i know a lot of other artist .... ur comment is wronge by saying people who think rankin is grate need to learn more .... hes on of loads who are grate photographers.

I'm sure it is difficult to photograph a fair skinned model with out blowing the highlights in any light. It looks difficult in each setting.

A little talent stretched a very long way and a lot of self publicity.
