This is such a underrated job in the airforce. People need to realize that this is one of the most unique special force job out there in the fact that these guys are sent behind enemy to gather very crucial data that can mean success or complete and utter failure on a mission look at dessert storm. That mission was a failure due to the lack of data on the weather. These guys are deployed with rangers and seals which means they can hold their own don't underestimate a weather man with a gun

@JerrBear92 I received a letter from a recruiter (though it was a year ago) and they were looking to fill combat roles, with an emphasis on Special Operations. These jobs include SOWT, CCT, PJ, TACP, SF, and EOD. I know when I was trying to pick my AFSC you had to take the Special Tactics Physical Aptitude Stamina Test for SOWT, PJ, and CCT. TACP is much like Combat Control, and while they're Special Operations, their pipeline isn't quite as grueling. Message me if you wanna know more.

@JerrBear92 CCT, PJ, SOWT, and TACP all require you to pass the PAST (Physical Aptitude Stamina Test) , TACP is quite different, but you still have to pass set standards before you can go in for the job. To get into Special Tactics (SOWT, CCT, and PJ) you've then got to make it through indoc (after basic training) upon successfully completing indoc, you'll be on your way to the school house(s)

Selection for this job is twice as long as selection for CCT and soon to be 4x longer depending on if the commander increases the time spent for selection. They also go through the same Selection as CCT (just twice as long) and school with them as well. They are not simply your average weatherman, they do special recon for the area they work in, and whichever unit they are with, they go out with them in -whatever- they do. Often deployed with Army SF, Ranger and occasionally Army Airborne.

beholdendamage: Why don't you tell us all what your AFSC is, and then we'll tell you about SOWT. Just because SOWT weren't in Transformers doesn't mean that they're not an integral part of the battlespace.

SOWT guys are out there, sometimes by themselves, doing weather and recon. You won't find many other people in the AF who've been in the middle of Afghanistan without a team surrounding them.

sure, they're weathermen, but their job really encompasses most of the environment. they gather weather data like wind direction and wind speed above the surface like this guy, take observations and make forecasts, analyze snow/avalanche data, riverine data, soil, terrain, and stuff like that. but, above that, "air commandos" are assualters first. too bad al roker has given a bad name to weathermen worldwide.

I saw 2 videos on these guys on the AirCommandos channel showing HALO, and Scuba ops. Do these guys get to go to those schools? I know they are static line qualified, but didn't know about the other infil methods. If you're btdt please respond. By the way, hats off, cause sending up a red balloon in enemy territory and sticking around to watch it takes guts!

@wingedsuperyak SOWT is more like the Green Berets when it comes to specialty schools. Most of them are now HALO qualified, but only the few that need it have scuba bubbles. Other schools include Ranger, Pathfinder, and Air Assault. They are the only people of their kind in SOCOM, so they are trained to integrate with anyone.

They usually send up a balloon at night. The red balloon is for photo ops and stateside training only.

Inagine being apart of the 82nd, inside the plane ready to jump and a call comes in and you have to turn back due to a freak sandstorm that would hit you as you dropped to your lz. If that call wouldent come it could kill your unit, SOWT trains with CCT's pipeline and is deployed with Army SF and Air Force SOC units, they go through training to survive combat with these units, they aren't your average meteorologist. This is the most unique Special Ops Unit out there.

Keep in mind: The success of the Son Tay POW camp raid in North Vietnam was carefully planned largley in part to the weather recon of the 10th CWS, who routinely snuck into North Vietnam; and the Holloway Commission, the panel that investigated the Iran Hostage Rescue debacle, noted that the lack of up-to-date weather intel personnel on the ground was one of the primary reasons the mission failed. Those facts alone should tell you how important their job is.

Digital anemometers (those things that look like pinwheels) can be used to give you a very accurate reading on average wind speeds, but obviously only at surface level.  To get wind speed and direction into the upper troposphere (where planes would be flying), tracking the balloon is the only way to go!
