i took psychology in high school and almost 4 to 7 times a week we would watch a Philip zimbardo short film documentary. Also i got to play as him in a class video we had to make..... good times
We watched his videos all the time in my high school psychology class. His demeanor and appearance always disconcerted us, since he has a sort of evil circus ringmaster vibe going on. He's a fantastic psychologist, though.
The depiction in this upload is MISANDRIC and sexist towards men. Child A on the left is clearly a boy and child B is a girl. This tries to reflect that females are superior to boys in many subliminal ways. Criminal!
The marshmallow test: too many variables. Accuracy of instruction, accuracy of understanding, low level of hunger, desire to be done with eating and get on with things, distrust of the food, lack of controls and double blind approach, etc, etc. The world is full of hyped up experimental results. Postponing gratification is a universally accepted strength, so no harm done... can't begrudge this man's desire to sell books /make a buck ...and he cares.
@ccskatepark Agreed. Not to mention post-experimental variables that transpire amid the checkups -- the subjects may have endured many social disparities that shaped their psyches whilst developing.
@Oneworld87 ... guess it's ok to excuse the technique...it's purpose was to be sensational to the average joe (or parent) and encourage further interest in an important subject. Mischel in 1972 was the one who fathered this test and he had the genius to follow up 18 yrs later. What we're seeing here is marketing...of something worthwhile...and other technicians can (and do) approach it more scientifically today... so it's all good, you know...just doesn't cut it scientifically.
Another interpretaion: The kid, eating the marshmallow immediately doesn't BELIEVE!
If its promised so before: "If you wait, you gain soo much later." And then: "Sorry, it havent worked out, you lost all."
So I'm not shure, if the future-oriented children are really successfullier than present oriented.
Example: Managers and Bankster, lurking at the next bonus lost nothing, in difference to the people investing. So the future oriented are mostly in danger to loose anything.
@Atavar74 I think that your interpretation would have merit if the kid ate the marshmellow right away or if the researchers scorned at them sarcastically.
That would have affected it greately.
But 4 years old kids fortunately have difficulties understanding sarcasm and the concept of lying is awkward for them.
So everything is reduced to how strong they are against temptation, and if they can delay gratification for a bigger gratification in the long term.
I feel like having this experiment and finding varied responses (knowing some young minds will choose not eat the marshmallow) is the true reason why these problems (future "issues") exist in the first place.
I say the boy was just happy for the one, and the selfish greedy girl only wanted more. While the boy who may be jealous about not having two marshmallows later in life is hounded for being to hasty and criticized, while the girl is rewarded, of course the boy is screwed. Lucifer indeed
@quelorepario are you serious? what kind of reply is that? Ok, he looks like the stereotype of a devil, if someone were to dress up as the devil, they'd probably slick their hair back with a dark goatee, and a hooked nose. I apologise for not having first hand evidence of what the dark angel Lucifer looks like.
@weefeatures That was, in fact, my point. We make comparisons of stereotypes all the time without actually being able too see the reality. Lucifer is an imaginary entity, and yet we can imagine him red with horns thanks to the imagination of the artists from the middle ages to these days.
Now, if we do that with imaginary beings, what about real beings. Are we capable of seeing the real person through our construal?
Yep, bullshit, I hate marshmallows. Time is not the issue. A comprehension of consequences and a conscious disregard for outcomes of actions is the issue.
Time is not the issue. But what correlates to time is the issue. And thus... time is, basically, the issue.
Do you think that four-year-olds have the same rational arguments that you do? Obviously not. Their brains haven't even fully developed yet. So this is not bullshit.
@Twicebakedtaters If you haven't even taken psych 101 any explanation about psychology will sound as bullshit to you, and yet you are psychologically manipulated everyday by marketers to buy by impulse.
If you are not familiar with the research, and don't know about how the experiments are usually performed, please don't pass judgment on something you don't know nor understand.
Thats assuming you buy into the nonsense in the first place. It did not take a marshmallow study to understand these kids would have significant differences. HELLO.
I can, will, and have passed judgment. Time is and irrelevant factor. shortsighted gratification is the animal. Nothing else.
I've heard of this experiment before and it made me sad. I'm not really a big marshmallow fan, and I would rather force myself to only have one marshmallow because of the high sugar and unnecessary calories. This just means I look even further into the future than most future oriented people, but under this experiment I would be viewed as a present oriented person.

Are there any areas where the the children that didn't wait for gratification did better ?
This study is so loaded with bias and it's conclusions are even worst .Null and void ,not even worth publishing on any peer reviewed journal
I suppose he could always write a book ,might even be a best seller and make lots of money ,Now not sometime in the future
