@dmaco09 The Japanese studied the Focke-Wulf 190 cowling techniques closely, for the radial engine would barely fit. And indeed, the Ki-100 became a formidable opponent.
@kolbpilot -IF YOU GET THE CHANCE TO PLAY ACES HIGH(ONLINE WW2 FIGHTER GAME....)YOU'LL QUICKLY FIND OUT THAT THE SHIDEN-KAI IS ONE OF THE FEW AIRCRAFT THAT CAN SHOOT DOWN ANYTHING THE ALLIES CAN SEND AGAINST IT.....
The Shiden-Kai was a IJN fighter. I dont know where people got the idea that the Shiden was not a good performing aircraft. It was very maneuverable and rugged aircraft that when piloted by a experienced pilot was a real handful for Allied pilots.
All Japanese aircraft produced late in war were plagued with quality control and maintenance issues. The Ki-100, Ki-84, and N1K2-J were no exceptions. But when operating properly they made a lasting impression on Allied pilots.
N1K2 was a very troublesome aircraft. Its performance isn't really all that impressive either. And was in practice below nominal, because engines didn't deliver rated hp.
It's "reputation" seem to mostly, if not all, stem from a few outright lies (japanese pilots' claims where never questioned or challenged, unlike all other nationalities, and japanese propaganda also merrily went ahead and made even more of it) about spectacular success.
I think Sakai was on the button. Not biased at all.
@Vermiliontea I wonder how many different types Sakai got to fly during the war (Ki-84 for example) for he was a busy man. He primarily flew the Zero but who knows what he he got to jump in here & there. According to him, he jumped in to a Zero on his very last mission when there was a variety of fighters to chose from to chase a B-32 Dominator.
@kolbpilot I'm beginning to get old, as in memory being affected. But Sakai was a navy pilot and did not fly army types. He may have, but I do not recall such incident. I think the point here is that he did fly the 'George', and in his first book he mirrored the official, wartime, japanese, glowing version of the plane. He did seem in a hurry to switch back to late Zeros though, and later, as the trauma of fighting and losing a war got more distant, he seems to have changed his account.
@JamesEndsor I forgot where I read that. Off some interview that I read on the internet, I think, or maybe some magazine article. The memory fades. : ). But he did say it.
My friend Ken Safer scratch built a 138" span R/C model of one of these complete with the butterfly flaps, custom made gear, tail wheel strut carved from a solid block of aluminum, sliding canopy, removable ammo boxes revealing switches, charging jacks and air tank fills. Plane also had over 1000 hand applied rivets and of course panel lines and all markings were painted on, no decals, he's a master builder but he's getting old.
Was this better than the Ki-84 'Frank'? I always get lost trying to figure out what was considered definitively the best late-war J-fighter. Perhaps it's because of the army/navy divide - one thing i think I know is that these J-fighters weren't good or super quick at high altitude, so the B-29s were almost immune, but otherwise it seems the Ki-100, the stubby navy one (can't remember the name) this and the Ki-84 seem to all be chosen as the best. Confusing!
@mistersmith6000 I think u mean the J2M 'Raiden' (Thunderbolt). Though i just read about the Ki-61-II using the Ha-140 engine being one of the few planes being able to actually reach the B-29's with sufficient guns to actually do anything to them short of ramming them. But yeah generally the late war ones would be the N1K2-J, J2M3 or 5 and the Ki-84-I.
@Ascend3r Got it. Yeah the stubby one is the 'Raiden' and the Ki-100 is a Ki-61 with a radial. That clears up some of the confusion. Thanks for the info. I read abut B-17s in Europe and they were vulnerable to the Fw-190 at lower altitudes, but the B29s were almost untouchable, it seems, even without escorts. It must have been a grim realization for the Japanese high command. Even their flak, or so I read, seems to have been weak compared to the Germans
In an interview shortly before he passed away, Saburo Sakai said the "the N1K2 was a piece of shit, and Kawanishi should have stuck to making seaplanes". His words, not mine. I find his comment very intriguing. He had some pretty harsh words regarding Genda as well.
@30188GA "third rate firm" is how I read it from Sakai, describing Kawanishi. It's hard to judge his bias towards it, but when all said & done, the N1K2 was a worthy effort (inho), suffering from quality control issues. There is no doubt Kawanishi knew how to build sea planes.
@pudransemarikas Sakai could not stand Genda so maybe, because Genda was so enthusiastic about the N1K2, Sakai would have nothing to do with it. Who knows ?
this is not a video game, it a cg rendering. It was done in LW. Quite old actually, but it was one of the clips that inspired me to produce similar. I havent seen tochy update any of this in a loooong time.

@30188GA maybe because he flew mostly mitsubishi,,, or maybe because of the lack of quality of the materials but the design is very good
