this was such a great film , but it sickens me that in 2011 this is going on anywhere in the world , everyone should have access to medical care and the freedom to make their own life choices, for these young women to be forced into this then shunned and shamed for it makes me feel so helpless. i think of stuff like this each time i see a diamond encrusted blackberry or 26 inch rims or when our congress spends weeks debateing steriods in baseball....

anyone who lives in a first world country is so blessed. just the simple and natural act of child birth can become so difficult and painful in a third world country. those doctors are amazing for doing this work!
Today is the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. Since the Worldwide Fistula Fund was sponsoring the sponsoring a Detroit bridge for Join Women on the Bridge event, I watched Nova's 53-minute film "A Walk to Beautiful" this morning in honor of International Women's Day. See today's Google homepage for a bridge event near you or to check in virtually.
but was it God who inflicted her suffering in the first place? God made someone suffered a lot and then helped her after a while just to appear heroic is just pure nonsense- selfish act... this is why I can’t believe a God can exist… but all human invention to alleviate human suffering…
@relieboy24 And see its people like YOU, when the end comes for you you'll be wishing that you believed in god because clearly he's the one who made man and the this world we live in but for sure your going to hell because you rejected him. Life is not perfect everyone has problems and goes thru tramactic things life thats why people pray and keep faith because things will get better
@MzPhatNJuicy23 The only thing that is clear is that we've been lied to, and our parents before us and their parents before them. You have no right to curse anyone to "hell" on behalf of your god or anyone else. CLEARLY you believe in an evil, vengeful god, and most of us want no part of this god's murderous ways.
Hopeless and lost, I search for answer to be healed and be whole again and laugh like a free born child. Hopeless and lost, frustrated I mumble and tumble God what have I done to you? Discriminated and alone in the cold world. Hopeless and lost, I cry every night hopping tomorrow is, a different stories. Hopeless and lost, I do beg for shelter my heart has shattered like a broken glass. Hopeless and lost, I wait for answer He will not forsake me not will he forget me MY GOD.
Why should one thank jesus here???? Thank you Drs and nurses!!! Please lets get out of religious trap. That is the only way we make progress in Ethiopia.
To hell with all Gods that Habesha people worship!!!!! Where were those gods!? Some one said amazing grace, for Jesus! Please, what has jesus to do with the healing of this poor women!?????This problem is not spritual, it spoverty! It is ignorance ! The Habash called onto their doomy gods all the time. Prayers never solve poverty. Look, the Habasha Priest give cow dung as remedy to sick people and some times tells you to hung some charms on your neck.
Stop having sex with older men at a very young age. There should be a law prohibiting young women from geting married before the age of 19. these girls are sexually abused by Ethiopian men.
One of the finest documentaries I've ever seen. This film had me crying -- empathy for the suffering of the women, gratitude for those who help them heal. Wow!
This video touched my heart. God bless the doctors and nurses who dedicate their lives to help these beautiful women who are just children. When you think your problems are great, and you see this, they are certainly not. What precious and beautiful young ladies they are and I wish them the best life possible. Thank you Jesus for making it possible for these women to have a normal life.
What precious, precious, precious young ladies. I wish I could hug every one of them. They have been through a lot... but with the help of the Lord... they have come through... brighter than diamonds. Praise God!!! :) Thank you Lord Jesus! :)
Thank you so much for putting this on youtube. Incredible. Bless all of the doctors, nurses, and everyone who make these women's lives beautiful again.
i feel bad for these people thats the truth but i need to try to let my anger go when i get mad i just i don't know Go crazy i think BUT I DO NOT HAVE PROBLEMS and god bless you all :)
"Like" is not enough to say about this documentary. Especially Wubetes story made me cry! I wish the doctors and everybody involved in that important work the best! May they be able to help many more women...God Bless You!
OMG ......I was so moved by this film. I am ashamed to be a Man and living in America and doing nothing about this problem. I would love to find a way to help. I do not want to give a charitable donation....I want to GO and help. I may not have the skill of a Dr. but I know I can do "something" to help these women. My Lord Jesus would ask nothing less. If this film did not move your heart nothing will. My heart has been called a heart of stone...........but I have to tell you ..I sat and wept.
@TheProphetLives777 Dear ProphetLives777, at the beginning your prays and intentions will help so much, .. then if you want to go to Addis Ababa, you can help with your force in works where force is required: washing, bringing, moving, etc, etc. God bless you always.
Maybe in America there are also some "Silent" tragedies you can also help.
I am currently reading Catherine Hamlin's book called 'The hospital by the River'. I would thoroughly recommend it. So pleased I have now seen this documentary so I can see the hospital they are writing about. Absolutely amazing what Catherine and Reg did for the women of Ethiopia. How amazing the ways God uses people to save others :-)
Im glad that everything worked out for these women in the end, it was a very happy ending. It made me so happy when they were getting their new clothes, the doctors at that hospital are very kind.
amazing story. this unfortunately is not very uncommon. I have seen hundreds of Somali women go through the same thing. Because these women can't get the right help during birth the outcome is usually disastrous. thanks for this documentary film it toughed my heart.
God bless Catherine Hamlin. Imagine if we all used our lives and our training, talents to help humanity in vital ways? It would be such a better world.
These women are so beautiful and so strong! Bless all the people who helped them, Bless the women and I pray that in Ethiopia and other developing countries men can start to see that women are not there just to be baby machines, but to be cherished and loved as they are, the saddest part was the young girl who had her childhood stolen, I was so happy to see she had a chance to be in a safe loving place and share her heart with the beautiful children, so many, I wish I could bring them all here
The immense pressure that organised religion groups put on WOMEN is a fact which can be seen worldwide where the gold addicted institution, based on externalities worship dictate lifestyle, custom and inhuman behaviour, ethically and morally unacceptable. To consider women as merely an incubator is shown also in the way are planet Earth is treated in this regard.
The Documentary didn't mention about the economic poverty imposed on mankind by the corporate, another parasitic entity...
I just watched this today (11-29-09) but have wanted to watch it for a long time. Oprah did a program on this subject and the older European doctor was on the show. One reason the girls are forced to have sex so young is that the men believe that if they have sex with a virgin they will not get HIV. So they go for the youngest girls they are allowed. Of course we all know that the man's sexual outlet is the most important thing inthe universe. Nothing should stop him from his pleasure.
i hopee that was sarcasm in the end of you comment there.... i really think these men who take these girls so young are perverse and it makes me want to throw up just thinking about it
This doco really woke me up. I can't believe, with what these girls go through, that I was never aware of this until now, I never thought about it. What a huge happily-blind selfish bubble we live in in the West. I can't imagine my friends' fathers' marrying them off at age 15 (or younger). I can't imagine being forced to marry some guy and having no choice, and then having to get pregnant by him. Those girls are so trapped, it is unbelievable. And this is 'normal' in their communities.
This shocking doco really woke me up to something that is a "normal" part of life for so many girls. I had no real idea anything like this happened in our world. My brothers tell me we don't need feminism today, they need to watch this doco.
If any of my friends' fathers married them off at age 11 (or at any age) our entire community in New Zealand would be outraged, and would help her. I just can't imagine myself or my friends being married off at age 15 (or younger) and having no choice.
How can you tell that from these comments? There is nothing here up to your comment that in any way suggests these people are athiest. The young girls were Christian, or did you not notice that? Just out for a fight I guess.
I understand they do not have the best medical care when they have their children, but why so many with this condition? They need to explain better than this.
It was mentioned that they are tiny, from lack of calories in their diet and having to carry heavy water jugs prevented growth as well. Plus having children at 10 yrs of age, their bodies were not ready for children.
@UCFLady Because they have sexual contact at a very young age they have not developed in order for sexual productivity. The way the male may be pursuing sex with the girl maybe too harsh and her vaginal areas will be ripped bruised and other areas. The streneous work they endure also creates these problems. :) hope this helped x
fistulafoundation- Doctors Reginald and Catherine Hamlin are the founders of the fistula hospital in Addis. They are originally from Australia. He died in 1993 and she is 84 and has been nominated for a nobel peace prize.
these kind of documentaries always make me feel guilty because if my family hadn't gottten a D.V we would be there and that could have easily been me i came here when i was about 6 yet i still remember the poverty in ethiopia and what we went through and how lucky i am to get a chance to live in america sometimes i take it for granted and it's times likes these i remember! God bless those doctors and nurses it's such a shame girls-children have to go through this..so young
very moving, but I had to stop and think about how they filmed this... like when shes walking for miles on end, the crew was probably following in a truck or something with all the equipment. ugh.
to really help ethiopia though, we need to invest in industries, teach better farming practices, and most importantly work on planned parenthood centers to help educate and provide a means not to have so many children or else the cycle of poverty and problems that involves will never be solved.
these kind of documentaries always make me feel guilty because if my family hadn't gottten a D.V we would be there and that could have easily been me i came here when i was about 6 yet i still remember the poverty in ethiopia and what we went through and how lucky i am to get a chance to live in america sometimes i take it for granted and it's times likes these i remember! @jessica4hever , you are absolutly non-sense, this problem or any other problems occure in few places to few people compared to the wide place and the general population. yet, you concluded that had you not gone out, your chance in ethiopia were like these girls, atually your chance to gone through like this is less than 1 %..in your statemnt i see arogance, i am glad arogant like you left ethiopia
this could have been me.i cannot deliver naturally because of my pelvis shape. my 2 beautiful babies could ahve died had i not had access to emergency c-sections. i am very blessed.
OK. Not to reflect on the content of this episode of Nova (which was very moving) but the Scientology commercial that was played before it was very disheartening. Don't soil a program of integrity like Nova with witchcraft and sci-fi mumbo jumbo.
She is really BRAVE. Even in Life or death, Her husban rejected her and her brothers and sister throw her away and left her to die. she crys and crys with grief and sarrow intil a day she understand what she is, she fought what is tormenting her and found anthor path that will lead her into anthor.People will always be greedy and selfish but, one will lust its mind and help the weaken, of those who are graceful they will be in the eyes of god
Beautiful is the word. The humanity of the doctors, nurses and other helpers, as well as the women they helped, was heart-wrenching. I have never cried through anything quite like this.
I am truly blessed to be where I am. There is so much we are not aware of being here in the USA. Thank you for this, I have so much to say, but cant say it all here. Just thank you.
This was so incredibly touching and inspiring! It was so wonderful to see these women being cured, but it is still so sad to know that with the hard life these women lead, there will be many more who will who will need help. God less those who are so wonderful to help them!
this was amazing... it is so exciting to see the work that is being done to improve the lives of these women. it is sad knowing that so many thousand will never recieve the help they need and will continue to live in this state. i will definately be praying for these beautiful people in ethiopia!! god bless xxxxx
What a wonderful documentary. The ending was very moving. Heheh, and she reminded me of my girlfriends when she returned home and was shocked how little cleaning the husband had been doing :D We men are Awesome :D High five ! :D
This is an amazing story and is worth watching and sharing with others. There is so much that happens we're unaware of in western society. and Most of us really have NO idea what it's like to struggle and suffer. I think one of the easiest things we could do, is not complain so much. We as Americans tend to be whiny and very spoiled... Does that sound about right, or am I off base?
Thank you for bringing the matter to our attention and for the tireless souls who labor to help these poor women.
Why do the Moslem countries rich with oil revenues not fund these hospitals? Why do they abandon these women to the care of largely Christian care organizations?
Where is their Moslem faith? Where are their works? In taller buildings in Abu Dabai?
Please don't conflate religion and nationality. Yes, OPEC nations lag behind industrialized ones in charitable giving, but not all OPEC nations are majority Muslim, and not all industrialized nations are majority Christian.
Here's another question: why's there an inverse relationship b/w the percentage of church-goers in a country and its per capita aid to developing nations? I recognize that the world is too complex to draw a causal relationship b/w the two; I'd thank you to do the same.
Jayhl77: Western nations do give a disproportionately large amount to charity and aid even compared to their GDPs. And most people in Western nations are Christian. Still I am sure Atheist are giving their share to charity and aid as well. :)

And this is 'normal' in their communities.
atozinco 2 years ago
This shocking doco really woke me up to something that is a "normal" part of life for so many girls. I had no real idea anything like this happened in our world. My brothers tell me we don't need feminism today, they need to watch this doco.
If any of my friends' fathers married them off at age 11 (or at any age) our entire community in New Zealand would be outraged, and would help her. I just can't imagine myself or my friends being married off at age 15 (or younger) and having no choice.

tig3rbit3r 2 years ago
Mostly atheists and agnostics watch NOVA, and also considering that this is listed under the science and technology section of YouTube Shows, yeah.

UCFLady 2 years ago
It was mentioned that they are tiny, from lack of calories in their diet and having to carry heavy water jugs prevented growth as well. Plus having children at 10 yrs of age, their bodies were not ready for children.
spawnee 2 years ago
@UCFLady Because they have sexual contact at a very young age they have not developed in order for sexual productivity. The way the male may be pursuing sex with the girl maybe too harsh and her vaginal areas will be ripped bruised and other areas. The streneous work they endure also creates these problems. :) hope this helped x

The men who marry (rape) these young girls, should be in jail, and
Religion should be illegal, Its just brainwashing!

very moving, but I had to stop and think about how they filmed this... like when shes walking for miles on end, the crew was probably following in a truck or something with all the equipment. ugh.
to really help ethiopia though, we need to invest in industries, teach better farming practices, and most importantly work on planned parenthood centers to help educate and provide a means not to have so many children or else the cycle of poverty and problems that involves will never be solved.

OK. Not to reflect on the content of this episode of Nova (which was very moving) but the Scientology commercial that was played before it was very disheartening. Don't soil a program of integrity like Nova with witchcraft and sci-fi mumbo jumbo.
Shame on you Google.

Beautiful is the word. The humanity of the doctors, nurses and other helpers, as well as the women they helped, was heart-wrenching. I have never cried through anything quite like this.

Does that sound about right, or am I off base?
whenyouhavetime 2 years ago 10
Thank you for bringing the matter to our attention and for the tireless souls who labor to help these poor women.
Why do the Moslem countries rich with oil revenues not fund these hospitals? Why do they abandon these women to the care of largely Christian care organizations?
Where is their Moslem faith? Where are their works? In taller buildings in Abu Dabai?
Blessed are the meek.....
mbuquoi 2 years ago
Please don't conflate religion and nationality. Yes, OPEC nations lag behind industrialized ones in charitable giving, but not all OPEC nations are majority Muslim, and not all industrialized nations are majority Christian.
Here's another question: why's there an inverse relationship b/w the percentage of church-goers in a country and its per capita aid to developing nations? I recognize that the world is too complex to draw a causal relationship b/w the two; I'd thank you to do the same.
jayhl77 2 years ago 3
Jayhl77: Western nations do give a disproportionately large amount to charity and aid even compared to their GDPs. And most people in Western nations are Christian. Still I am sure Atheist are giving their share to charity and aid as well. :)
