Why oh why can't someone please post the 1991 performance of the New York City opera of this? It was simulcast on BBC before I die please Sept 25th 1991. Scott Bergeson Conductor Maureen OFlynn played Susanna! PLEASE PLEASE the whole opera, or at least the aria Susanna sings in the garden in the 4th act to tease Figaro!
Wonderful performance. I've just seen the new one a few days ago in Bastille with Luca Pisaroni and Ludovic Tézier and it wasn't too bad. Good opportunity to appreciate in live the nice decor and the marvellous costumes.
Beautiful production. I was born the year of this performance (1980). As such, I missed out on even the great opera stars still singing past their prime in this decade - Sutherland, Popp, Janowitz, Price and 80's ladies like Kathy Battle, Jessye Norman, Carol Vaness and Ghena Dimitrova. The 80's was probably the final great era of opera. 90's singers weren't all that. I don't like Fleming or Terfel. Damn, I was born too late!
Een van de allerontroerendste momenten uit de hele muziekliteratuur: waar Almaviva's "contessa perdono" wordt overgenomen door de Contessa's "piu docile io sono".
Totally and utterly sublime. One of the most amazing intertwining pieces of writting anyone could ever have dreamt off. They don't make em like they used too!! Bravo Wolfie!
firstly i really like evrybodys singing here! especially van dam has such a great voice, perfect for figaro. and theyre singing with so much passion and emotion!!
but i find the tempo is rather a bit too fast for the very final scene! (i guess im abit spoiled by harnoncourts interpretations)can anyone comment, please!
I heared (and sing) already lot of Nozze and, for me this tempo is quite normal. But I have to say that I always found Harnoncourt's interpretation too slow !
The duet is wonderful. Both are great singers. The acting of Lucia Popp is pretty cool. I particularly enjoy it! Janowitz has always a beautiful voice: pity for her bad diction.
The Fragonard-inspired set, the dream cast, Solti, and of course, Mozart's best work of all time—perfection.

@AmericanEvita - Don't cry Evita, perhaps in you next life you will be born a few years ealier!
(Is that possible?)
Just a little joke here, so please don't take offence....
You were born in 1980 - so that makes you about 30 years old.
Well, let me say that you do not look 30 years old!
But 10 years ago 'you looked 30 years old'

Great cast, but entirely lifeless conducting from Solti. Same as on his recording with Ramey: after the overture nothing really matters any more.
