The Nato alliance at that time couldnt have helped the hungarians without a full scale war against the Soviet Union (for the 1956 action). Sending forces to Hungaria would have meant driving through the Warsaw pact nations. A full scale war, something Nato wished to avoid.
For the 1945 action, the Hungarians were on the Axis side and as such the Allies were fighting them.
I don't know where the idea that the "Americans won't help them" comes into play.
The Nato alliance could deliver weapons and support but in the allied eyes Hungary didn't deserve it.
At least it was particularly unappropriated from the voice of america to broadcast falls promises to insurgents.
It is fact that Hungary was in the axis but the root causes are trianon treaty consequences and the huge Hungarian diaspora in adjacent country, problem still unsolved.
America was broadcasting on the Eastern-block countries radios..."Fight against Russia and Communists and we will help." Hungarians thought America would lend support after they started fighting because of these broadcasts. Thats where the 'America didn't help' because we said we would and did not.

too right it is history and the Hungarian Priminister called out via the radio, in many different languages including English asking for help. Great Britain, the US knew about the situation but thaught it best to stay out and let innocent people die.

Eisenhower did not know if the end result of the entire war would be best if the Hungarians were helped with military force. So he granted amnesty to hungarian refugees. 300,000 Hungarians were accepted into America. Both countries had nuclear weapons, and even the slightest direct attack against Russia could have caused a nuclear war.
True - but I don't think the Hungarians ever expected direct military action against the USSR. The main area of bitterness is around the fact that the United States encouraged the Hungarian revolt against the communist dictatorship (via Radio Free Europe), implying that arms and other assistance would be forthcoming. They then sat back and allowed the revolution to be crushed - something which is still viewed as a betrayal by many to this day.
Those who use their common sense did not vote for them. Unfortunately during the "few" years of occupation, they tainted the way people think, and the descendants of these people have been at least partially tainted too. Or they are just simply stupid. This ideology needs to die out, but sadly this process needs more time. I just hope not too much.
Vajna's best movie. (Actually he's been making quite poor ones, but this one is great!) And it's historically correct, although a fiction. The Hungarian title fits much better, it means: Freedom and Love. It refers to a famous poem of Sándor Petőfi, the poet of the 1848 revolution which laid down the ideological foundations of modern Hungary.
My mother is Hungarian and now not so healthy. I've recently shown her some U-tube clips about the Revolution and it brought back so many memories for her. Can't find the movie on NetFlix - is there another way to get it?

Yes, what we have done to the natives for centuries. Like given them the full legal rights that other citizens have, and given them back parts of their old tribal lands upon which they have built huge casinos that make them millions and millions of dollars. Many of my friends have native american blood. There is a good chance that I do. But no longer is the native american an oppressed member of american society.
Some Natives, yes, but what about the millions others who are living in poverty because the government gives them the worst land? And I don't know how it is in the US, but in Canada, when the government wants the land the Natives are on - even today - the Natives have to leave without a say.
This results in high suicide rates, and poor school grades, which ends up causing poverty and crime.
I'm not anti-American or Canadian, but I must say that I do find it ironic when you say "Like given them the full legal rights that other citizens have, and given them back parts of their old tribal lands..."
Why are we giving them these things? This is rightfully their land - they are the original citizens. This isn't a nice gift of good-faith, but something that shouldn't have been taken away from them in the first place, and we're just making up for it today after centuries.
If we had had real guns not just primitive machineguns and petrol-bombs(as you can see it in the movie) we could have been really glorious..not just martyrs.

Dying for freedom is so moving, but realistically mostly futile. Most of the time, those who defy the odds fail if they act on their own or unsupported by allies. The West was not ready to fight WWIII over their fight for freedom within the Soviet Empire.
That's understandable, but they(the west) shouldn't have made broadcasts into the Communist bloc promising full support if a revolution were to break out.
I wonder what the families of the thousands of Hungarians think, who died believing that America actually cared enough to come and save them.
