Populist Hip Hop is an oxymoron, once it becomes populist it is no longer hip hop and falls into the mainstream rap category.

@MajorAddiction that's because the corporate execs got together in the 90s and decided that that was the only way they could sell Hip Hop to people outside the young black urban community. When white corporate execs bought up every label in the world and only pushed what THEY thought was catchy, and signed only artists that would follow that mould.  When media like BET were bought out replaced & then trends/gimmicks/bad style perpetuated, to the point where justified with comments like yours.
