yes it does require more force but I'm talking about the rate...this method teaches the athlete to produce force slower, not faster, as his feet stay in contact with the surface longer before takeoff
Is it higher now because he was untrained before? Improving "explosiveness" is a rather general term, but so is the vertical jump exercise for athletes that are not competing in a vertical jump competition. Gains in box jump may come as a result of the athete having more confidence in not busting his shins, gaining hip flexibility, and just becoming more skilled at it. How well does this translate for athletes who run in there sport? Is there a lot of reactivity and elasticity being displayed?
The point of the exercise isn't to train reactivity. Confidence, hip flexibility, and skill play a part in the box jump but the athlete still has to get his weight off the ground. Relative strength is the key here. A person who has greater relative strength will be faster and also jump higher. So when training athletes, it is important to make sure their relative strength goes up as well as their raw strength. I.E: box jump + 2 inches, box squat + 15lbs
absolutely; if you dont have the strength or flexibility to suck your legs up quick enough along with the explosive power to drive upwards, ya yr gonna bust ass
everyone keeps showing all of these box jumps on youtube, and never mentioning the actual vert.. alot of these box jumps videos on youtube are starting to seem like more of a demonstration of hip flexibiltiy than vert.
The actual vert doesn't really matter at this point. This kid is still in H.S. The point is to get the athletes explosive and this definitely does that. If there were no combine training none of us would care about a true vert & very few teams actually test for them. IMO we should be less big on 40's verts and short shuttles for H.S. kids and more on performance. This is impressive.
the problem i have with your reply is that you're saying vert/40 in this case don't matter, yet this athlete is "becoming explosive"..
if he is indeed becoming explosive through this exercise, then it would translate directly too his vert/broad jump/40 etc.. one of those tests it would affect.
box jumps are effective at training hip flexor speed/power (translates to sprinting, accel), IMO.. i still dont get them for vert.
It's just my opinion that those hard numbers (referring to vert, 40 & broad etc) are important but not as much in this stage of his training. I dont think we can exclusively pigeon hole all "explosiveness" into whether a vertical jump or broad jump is high or not, unless one is training for that purpose alone (i.e combine training). My point whats more applicable? This kid IS getting more explosive...who cares what his true vert is? I guarantee it's higher now than before he went there tho. :)

I wasnt being sarcastic btw, as the guy who replied seem to think. I know it is damn hard to jump off foam!

I hit a 51" jump yesterday on flat ground @ 6'3" and 215 lbs. Took quite a while to work up to that.

So the purpose of the foam is to DECREASE the rate of force development?
VoteAwards 2 years ago
Yea, does it make it tougher to jump higher?
bamb00sage 2 years ago
is it not to absorb the force of the initial phase of the jump so he doestn get as much as he would of a solid surface??

doesn't tucking your legs up have a good amount to do with your ability to do these?

Of course vert matters, but I think you will increase both hip flexibility & vert with these..
