sigh... the computer was working really well for 8 months but recently it restarted (sudden black out) out of nowhere while i was surfing youtube and it automatically restarted again only to restart after a few seconds/minutes
I switched the hard drive but it seems to not be the problem
That restart problem is probably because of over heating. This is a common problem with another of gateway's computer. Only one as far as I know. Anyway, it is easily fixed by buying a simple fan or two, and installing them inside. They are very cheap, and easy to install. Hope this helps.

can anyone name some LCD monitors that go great with this gameing desktop, i would think anything from 24inch-32inch just message me a link to it i need this FAST WOOOOO THIS SYSTEM IS THE GREATEST
@gadgettts -I do lots of Video editing and wondering how do I upgrade the Video Memory ? and how do I install with my computer ? Do you have any Idea and any information ? Please help me out -Thank You
Upgrading the video memory is not all that important for improving your video editing performance. There ARE a few software/hardware combinations that will utilize the GPU on the video card(s) but in general if you have a setup like the 6800 (quad core, 4GB of memory etc ) you would be better served having a dedicated fast (10,000 rpm) hard drive as your storage drive.
Million thanks for your kind information, and would you like to give me some free advise what kind of computer is best for the video editing ? I will wait for your answer , because I'm going have a new computer real soon -Thank you
If you live in the USA, then your choices are quite expansive. What type of video editing and you hoping to do? What software will you be using? What is your budget?
I really like the Gateway desktops, but we've also found some great desktops from Dell and HP. Anything with an Intel i7 CPU, 4GB of memory and a decent sized hard drive should do you well.
i just bought this computer about a week ago and when i go into the video card settings i notice it says 1024mb of memory instead of the 512mb it is advertised with. does it infact have a 1g video card or am i reading something wrong?
I bought this computer 2 days ago and was wondering 2 things. I was thinking about uprading the 3gb of ram and filling in the remaining 3 slots with a gig each. Is it worth it to do that this soon? Also, from my old computer I have a 750w psu. If I put in more memory do I need to a better psu?
Thanks for the really fast reply. I am doing video editing, photo editing, audio editing, gaming etc. The specs of this PC seem like they would need a power supply more powerful than a 500w with the 8 quadrillion cores. So far the computer is fast and great and I'm glad i bought it.
Technically, if the card manufacturer followed the reference design, it should work. However, I would suggest that you use the same manufacturer... fewer unknownse = happier user!
I don't usually tell people this, but I don't run an anti-virus on ANY of my machines. I just reimage them every week or so.
I'll besure to make a 'gadget workshop' episode when I show people how to creat an easy-to-use image setup so they can avoid ever having to bring their systems in.
I didnt think of this in the other post but how does the power supply sit in the case? are there brakets along the side of the case? i would like to put a Corsair HX1000w in there if possible.
Unfortunately we've already sent the box back to Gateway and I'm out of the office so I can't really look through the footage. I AM plannng on meeting with Gateway at CES, so I'll take a peek then.
Unfortunately I really couldn't answer that without a bit more information. -- Have you tried plugging something else into the audio port? Try plugging in a set of headphones to see if audio is actually making it to the port.
I understand the FX 6800 has a 500 watt ps. What make and model is the mother board? I'm leaning towards NVIDIA 260s if the mother board will accept them. Of course with a ps upgrade, maybe 700w. thx.
Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, perhaps you should have read the previous comments on crossfire/SLI before posting.

I don't do a lot of gaming but I am looking for a fast computer in this price range that can handle HD video editing and Photoshop. Even my crummy Dell can handle Photoshop but it just can't handle playing any HD video that I've shot. Would this desktop be good for editing home made HD videos in programs like Sony Vegas?
Absolutely... The same strength in repetitive calculations that makes the Intel i7 CPU good for gaming will also speed up video editing and rendering. Peace, Fr. Robert
Hey Robert nice video! I have the same question as AuntieGravity777. I have a Sony HDSR 11 HD cam which I love but cant view the video on my PC(s) because the processor cant handle all of the video correctly. Would this be the best bang for the buck, or do you have any other suggestions? However I do have an additional question, could I build a PC for the same price and get a better rig set up?

I want to buy a gaming laptop but I don't want to pay over 1800 - Do you have any ideas of what would be good for me? I want to play WoW really smoothly and as well as Diablo 3 when it comes out
We don't shoot in 16:9 or in HD. Perhaps in the future, but we don't currently have the resources to change out our gear for newer stuff. :) Peace, Fr. Robert
Thanks for the message, but crossfire IS a SLI technology! (see above responses for full explaination) --- Still, I love the fact that all my uberGeek friends picked up on that! Peace, Fr. Robert
Crossfire IS SLI. SLI (Scan-Line Interleave) isn't a brand, it's a type of technology that allows two or more GPUs to share the load of rendering. -- It was created by 3DFX way back when and has since become a standard for improving graphics performance by using multiple cards.
NVIDIA may call their technology "SLI" (Scalable Link Interface) and ATI "crossfire" - but that doesn't change the fact that they are both flavors of the original SLI. Peace, Fr. Robert
lol- ATI will love the fact you confused their Crossfire technology with NVIDIA's SLI brand. Ubergeek or not I still prefer Alienware kit- I mean, why didn't Gateway include RAID? Mind you my Alienware box does look a bit like a giant stapler. :S
Thanks for the comment, but it's not a confusion. SLI isn't a brand, it's a type of technology. It just happens that NVIDIA used the same three letters for their flavor of SLI and ATI used "crossfire."
As for the RAID, Gateway does include that in the higher-priced FX desktops. In fact, the FX540XT we reviewed a while back had 2 10,000 RPM Raptors in a performance stripe. --- So it's there... it's just more expensive! Peace, Fr. Robert
Don't stand corrected... it's a perfectly good confusion created by the fact that NVIDIA chose the same three letters! :)
(Scan Line Interleave) vs. (Scalable Link Interface) --- Just more proof that sometimes marketing people prey on innocent uberGeeks! :) Peace, Fr. Robert
i like this desktop but hey i have a question!! so right now i have a sony VAIO laptop with windows XP and i've been wanting to upgrade !!! and i heard that now i can get an Apple mac book that also runs windows vista!!! so should i switch to a Mac??
The switch is really a personal choice. For all its faults, I like the windows platform and a choice of my own hardware. I tried switching to a MAC about a year back and it just didn't work for me, but it does for many. Peace, Fr. Robert
I have been very happy with my FX4710, though I kinda wish I had waited a little longer for this beast.
The one issue I had was a common issue with these prebuilt PCs. Recovery partitions. I tried to get Windows XP installed alongside Vista 64 bit, but it had a hard time seeing everything. I ended up swallowing my pride and seeking professional help to fix the bootloader.
Aside from that issue, mine is very well optimized for gaming, but this one is much more expandable.
I miss the days when the media would just come with each system. I know it's still availible for those who want it, but sometimes I just don't want to futz around with a recovery partition. Peace, Fr. Robert
Nice review, I was hoping you would do a review on the gateway lx(2600-1 if I'm right). This is probably the same except it's more for gaming as the lx is more for media.
I wouldn't really classify this as a "gadget". I miss the kind of stuff you used to review, like the Nabaztag, not just yet another computer or monitor. I'd much rather learn about a product i didn't even know existed.
Klaymehn, Thanks for the note... I do appreciate your opinion and we try to give a mix of products on the show. I think if you look back over the list of episodes you'll find that we review everything from the mainstream (desktops, LCD, etc) to the more ecclectic (cellular gateways, IPKVMs, lasers).
Still, we'll keep trying to find you the gadgets you want to see. Peace, Fr. Robert
Very nice pc, and review. It would be great for a gamer who wants the basis of a machine to upgrade later. Is it possible to buy this in the U.K? Thanks.
I'm happy with the upgrade path for the 6800.. two x16 PCI-E slots, 3 more DDR3 sockets, the hot-swap SATA II bays up front.
I honestly don't know about sales in the UK. I know that it's been difficult to get products like the XHD300 across the pond. Perhaps you can report back if you see the FX6800 "in the wild?" Peace, Fr. Robert
You're absolutely right. I'm not the biggest fan of the Radeon 4850, but still, I think it works because of the price. You can go with one of the higher-end FX machine that come with SLI, but then the price rises pretty quickly. Peace, Fr. Robert
wait.....lol its crossfire for ati(amd) and sli for nvidia

@gadgettts -I do lots of Video editing and wondering how do I upgrade the Video Memory ? and how do I install with my computer ? Do you have any Idea and any information ? Please help me out -Thank You
Anjaan1971 3 years ago
change the video card would help O.o
Axcelaration 3 years ago
Anjaan1971,
Upgrading the video memory is not all that important for improving your video editing performance. There ARE a few software/hardware combinations that will utilize the GPU on the video card(s) but in general if you have a setup like the 6800 (quad core, 4GB of memory etc ) you would be better served having a dedicated fast (10,000 rpm) hard drive as your storage drive.
.

Fr. Robert

Million thanks for your kind information, and would you like to give me some free advise what kind of computer is best for the video editing ? I will wait for your answer , because I'm going have a new computer real soon -Thank you
Anjaan1971 3 years ago
Anjaan1971,
If you live in the USA, then your choices are quite expansive. What type of video editing and you hoping to do? What software will you be using? What is your budget?
I really like the Gateway desktops, but we've also found some great desktops from Dell and HP. Anything with an Intel i7 CPU, 4GB of memory and a decent sized hard drive should do you well.

Thanks
sidebuster 3 years ago
sidebuster,
More memory is always better, but unless you're doing video editing I don't think it will raise the performance bar all that much.
Still... it couldn't hurt. -- And you will not need a new PSU just to upgrade the memory.
.
Peace,
Fr. Robert
gadgettts 3 years ago
Thanks for the really fast reply. I am doing video editing, photo editing, audio editing, gaming etc. The specs of this PC seem like they would need a power supply more powerful than a 500w with the 8 quadrillion cores. So far the computer is fast and great and I'm glad i bought it.

One More Quick Question, Would any 4850 card work in Crossfire with the 4850 on the Gateway FX or does it have to be the same exact card/brand
Axcelaration 3 years ago
Axcelaration,
Technically, if the card manufacturer followed the reference design, it should work. However, I would suggest that you use the same manufacturer... fewer unknownse = happier user!

Also, would upgrading the cooling fan or power supply be any trouble?
NyYankeee 3 years ago
NyYankeee,
The case can fit 2 full-size PCI-E cards like the 4870 -- Also, the PS and cooling fan are standard spec, so replacing them is no problem.

Can the case fit a 4870 X2 video card?

Ashleenia,
I don't usually tell people this, but I don't run an anti-virus on ANY of my machines. I just reimage them every week or so.
I'll besure to make a 'gadget workshop' episode when I show people how to creat an easy-to-use image setup so they can avoid ever having to bring their systems in.

How many 6-Pin Power Connectors Are There!?!!??!
Axcelaration 3 years ago
I understand the FX 6800 has a 500 watt ps. What make and model is the mother board? I'm leaning towards NVIDIA 260s if the mother board will accept them. Of course with a ps upgrade, maybe 700w. thx.
Clashing1234 3 years ago
How many watts is the powersupply and how many 6-Pin Power Connectors are there?
Thank You~
Axcelaration 3 years ago
Axcelaration,
The unit that we received had a 500 Watt PS with 2x6pin aux power connectors.
Sorry it took so long to get back to you. We've been getting burried in our Pre-CES 2009 stuff.

"They also include the crossfire adapter for SLI?" LOL how about crossfire for crossfire.
Xertalista 3 years ago
Hello Xertalista,
Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, perhaps you should have read the previous comments on crossfire/SLI before posting.
Crossfire and SLI are BOTH "SLI Technologies" -- They are simply the rebranding of that tech by ATI and NVIDIA respectively. NVIDIA just happend to choose a branding that is a bit more confusing -- They use "Scalable Link Interface" which has the same letters as "Scan Line Interleave" -- the tech upon which both brands build their multi-GPU products.

AuntieGravity777 3 years ago
AutieGravity777,
Absolutely... The same strength in repetitive calculations that makes the Intel i7 CPU good for gaming will also speed up video editing and rendering. Peace, Fr. Robert
gadgettts 3 years ago
Thanks for your quick reply. I think this might be the perfect desktop for me.
AuntieGravity777 3 years ago
Hey Robert nice video! I have the same question as AuntieGravity777. I have a Sony HDSR 11 HD cam which I love but cant view the video on my PC(s) because the processor cant handle all of the video correctly. Would this be the best bang for the buck, or do you have any other suggestions? However I do have an additional question, could I build a PC for the same price and get a better rig set up?

lil boo boo... crossfire not sli :p
nice review :)
shaolindreams 3 years ago
Hey shaolindreams,
Thanks for the message, but crossfire IS a SLI technology! (see above responses for full explaination) --- Still, I love the fact that all my uberGeek friends picked up on that! Peace, Fr. Robert
gadgettts 3 years ago
nice system. thanks for the review
MJElectronics 3 years ago
haha you said sli it's crossfire
suffix001 3 years ago
suffix,
Crossfire IS SLI.
Peace, Fr. Robert
gadgettts 3 years ago
Ty for the info I didn't know
suffix001 3 years ago
lol- ATI will love the fact you confused their Crossfire technology with NVIDIA's SLI brand. Ubergeek or not I still prefer Alienware kit- I mean, why didn't Gateway include RAID? Mind you my Alienware box does look a bit like a giant stapler. :S
sennetor 3 years ago
sennetor,
Thanks for the comment, but it's not a confusion.
Peace, Fr. Robert
gadgettts 3 years ago
I stand corrected.
sennetor 3 years ago
sennetor,
Don't stand corrected... it's a perfectly good confusion created by the fact that NVIDIA chose the same three letters! :)
(Scan Line Interleave) vs. (Scalable Link Interface) --- Just more proof that sometimes marketing people prey on innocent uberGeeks! :) Peace, Fr. Robert
gadgettts 3 years ago
i like this desktop but hey i have a question!! so right now i have a sony VAIO laptop with windows XP and i've been wanting to upgrade !!! and i heard that now i can get an Apple mac book that also runs windows vista!!! so should i switch to a Mac??
hectorste1 3 years ago
hectorste1,
The switch is really a personal choice. For all its faults, I like the windows platform and a choice of my own hardware. I tried switching to a MAC about a year back and it just didn't work for me, but it does for many. Peace, Fr. Robert
gadgettts 3 years ago
ohhh alright then!! thank you !!!!! i think i might switch then !! lol
hectorste1 3 years ago
I have been very happy with my FX4710, though I kinda wish I had waited a little longer for this beast.
The one issue I had was a common issue with these prebuilt PCs. Recovery partitions. I tried to get Windows XP installed alongside Vista 64 bit, but it had a hard time seeing everything. I ended up swallowing my pride and seeking professional help to fix the bootloader.
Aside from that issue, mine is very well optimized for gaming, but this one is much more expandable.
edgeofblade 3 years ago
edgeofblade,

Nice review, I was hoping you would do a review on the gateway lx(2600-1 if I'm right). This is probably the same except it's more for gaming as the lx is more for media.
Jr4594 3 years ago
I wouldn't really classify this as a "gadget". I miss the kind of stuff you used to review, like the Nabaztag, not just yet another computer or monitor. I'd much rather learn about a product i didn't even know existed.
Klaymehn 3 years ago
Klaymehn, Thanks for the note... I do appreciate your opinion and we try to give a mix of products on the show. I think if you look back over the list of episodes you'll find that we review everything from the mainstream (desktops, LCD, etc) to the more ecclectic (cellular gateways, IPKVMs, lasers).
Still, we'll keep trying to find you the gadgets you want to see. Peace, Fr. Robert
gadgettts 3 years ago
Very nice pc, and review. It would be great for a gamer who wants the basis of a machine to upgrade later. Is it possible to buy this in the U.K? Thanks.
numpty1972 3 years ago
Hey numpty,
I'm happy with the upgrade path for the 6800.. two x16 PCI-E slots, 3 more DDR3 sockets, the hot-swap SATA II bays up front.
I honestly don't know about sales in the UK. I know that it's been difficult to get products like the XHD300 across the pond. Perhaps you can report back if you see the FX6800 "in the wild?" Peace, Fr. Robert

brandtproduction,
You're absolutely right. I'm not the biggest fan of the Radeon 4850, but still, I think it works because of the price. You can go with one of the higher-end FX machine that come with SLI, but then the price rises pretty quickly. Peace, Fr. Robert
