Right you lot need educating. I train in pencak silat, and yes it is indonesian. And is one of the most complete martial arts there is. It has everything ground fighting, mid- range and up right. With the ability to flow from either perfectly with out breaking posture. It has its own yoga too, using all the postures from the martial arts side of it. Training requires alot of body conditioning to be able to flow through all these postures, which is a large part of training.

@onceigoblack ; I am a big fan of Ong Bak and Tony Jaa but I love Merantau better than Ong Bak, because Merantau has better storyline, the acting of the casts is better and most of all because it is more realistic than Ong Bak. The hero is not portrayed as a the invincible superhero, rather as normal human being. Iko's moves in this movie are not really spectacular but lethal and effective for real life fights. You have to see the movie to understand what I mean.

@onceigoblack ; I am a big fan of Ong Bak and Tony Jaa but I love Merantau better than Ong Bak, because Merantau has better storyline, the acting of the casts is better and most of all because it is more realistic than Ong Bak. The hero is not portrayed as a the invincible superhero, rather as normal human being. Iko's moves in this movie are not really spectacular but lethal and effective for real life fights. You have to see the movie to understand what I mean.

@venomscorpion- the storyline is slightly better i guess than ong bak, just because ong bak had more ridiculous scenes like the motorcycles and skaters. whats next, an elephant is smuggled to the us and he has to battle the oakland raiders? if i had to choose between tony and iko, id still pick tony. the differences between their acting abilities isnt much, but tony is still the faster and harder hitter.

But for self defense situation like facing attacker with knife, multiple attackers, or weapon fights I'll take silat or fma. If you add some bjj for groundfighting, it would be a complete package for a self defense :)

@onceigoblack If you look on youtube, there are thousands of videos of knife attacking and disarming techniques in silat. As for muay thai, I haven't seen any dealing with knife technique. You can figure it for yourself who'd be survived. :)

to be more clear to you, i will ask you again, who would win, a powerful and flexible muay thai fighter, with a knife and trained with it, versus, a flexible silat fighter, with a knife and trained with it, not extended the arm for the power to execute a stab? because, as i said, when i look at silat, i see neglected use of power and small movements from here to just over there. in muay thai, no power is neglected, and movements are from here to way over there compared to your silat.

The knife is not only an extension of the hand. You got to avoid the hand holding the knife at any cost. Even you got power and flexibility you still have to know the right strategy and proper technique to striking, dodging and disarming without injuring yourself. Brutally attacking a knife expert with full power could ended up injuring yourself.

Similar feeling I would imagine to the 1st time many people 1st seen Ong Bak.
Lot's of techniques used that you may have been unaware of & that may surprise you.
The execution & choreography is not quiet as sharp as in Ong Bak but it's not too far off.
