georgeandersonjr: I have lost both my parents in the last three years, but I am not going to spend my life in sorrow because I know they are in Heaven with Jesus rejoicing around the throne. Why should I be in sorrow when they are in such a wonderful place and I will see them again someday. They wouldn't want me to be in sorrow for the rest of my life. They would want me to live my life and be happy.
@tobias8966 obliviously you never lost a parent,i have i lost my dad nearly 6 years ago,not a day goes by that i don't mourn his loss,so until you have been there you have nothing to say.
One of my favourite Stanley Brothers songs. Carter had a very distinctive lead voice and the Stanley Brothers Harmony was something special. Thanks for posting
My dad made me listen to the Old & in the Way version. After that, I went back and found some old recordings of the Stanley Bros. That was Fifteen years ago. After Jerry Garcia passed.
IMHO, this is the best song Carter Stanley ever wrote. If one travels to Southwestern VA where the Stanley Brothers were born and raised, you can see those "deep rolling hills of old Virginia". I've traveled in that part of the state while listening to this song and tears were rolling down my face. It truly touched me.
@n2pickn Carter supposedly wrote this in the car..Ralph was driving and Carter had the glove compartment door down to use as a desk and wrote this coming in one night...Also Carter wrote songs under his half sister's name Ruby Rakes..That was when he didn't know if his songwriting was any good..He used his sister's name..
Thanks Steve..I had heard that about writing under his sister's name. Looking back at the history of the Stanley Brothers and Carter's songwriting, it is amazing to think that he didn't know if his songwriting was any good. He left us with some of the best songs ever written. So many great songwriters and artists left us too early.
@n2pickn Carter was in a class with Hank Williams Sr, Jimmie Rodgers..tormented souls..Carter was a bad alcoholic who died way too young from liver disease at 41 years of age...But when you look at some of the greatest songs ever written Carter wrote them...

It is a sad song and why would you spend your life in sorrow when mommy and daddy are dead. Don't make sense.
