It's pretty weird how Lord Alfred Hayes and the Bulldog sound. Alfred with his judo background and London accent while Davey Boy Smith had his accent from Wigan blended with the Canadian accent from his years spent in Calgary. These two were awesome in their heyday, but still Davey really lacks something in his promos though i cant put my finger on exactly what it was to be honest. Anyways RIP to these two men who represented the UK very well.
Dynamite's (tom billington) book is written from the perspective of a wrestler who knew he was better than the bulldog, miles better, but he just couldnt get over with the crowd. he also couldnt control his drug habbit. so dynamite became a spitefull jealous bitter guy once he was in his wheelchair! shame as he was dynamite in the ring. he wasted himself and he knew it!
british bulldog just abused the steroids like so many wrestlers...take them smartly in cycles and in moderation without the alcohol and other drugs along with a sensible diet.
it was so weird as a nine year old kid in Golborne (the Bulldog's hometown) tuning in to the big holywood productions of the WWF then hearing the Bulldog talk in the same accent as me and walk to the ring draped in the union jack while rule britannia played. He was a true inspiration to all Golborners!
They were so rife in the industry in the 80's and 90's - and lets not forget, steroids were only added to the controlled substance list in 1990, and a lot of wrestlers had been using them long before this to help cope with the grueling schedule and maintaining physique. It was just seen as doing what is required to compete back in those days - which is sad as its cost a lot of lives.
Steroids has cost a lot of lives, but pain pills are worse, they do more damage to the body. I think Vince is somewhat responsible for wrestler' deaths. Here's an example: in 1993 Owen Hart had to take time off because of an knee injury, after a month of two, he had to come back to work because he couldn't survive on what Vince was paying him.
Absolutley - couldn't agree more. I think its pretty hypocritical when he knew what these wrestlers were taking, just to get through and be able to perform to a level that makes him money - and then as soon as the fuss is kicked up he simply fired whoevers name was in the frame.
One could argue, given the dire financial situation the WWE was in during 1993, Vince really couldn't afford to pay an injured wrestler the same amount of money as he were working.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think he was as bad as many of that era - but I still don't think he was as fluid as most of the big names. His interviews always seemed to be lacking something.
In ring however, is a different story. He was as good as anyone. While he was always known for his power (rightfully so at this time of his career), he was actually extremely agile and as technically sound as anyone you care to mention. Its a traversty he never held the WWF title.
Davey Boy was an amazing wrestler, I love him! He had it all, power, the look, agility, and most important of all he had technical abilities on par with the best. One wouldn't expect such technical abilities coming from a "power man"
As for his interview skills, I don't think he was as good as Bret or Shawn (and their regarded as only being mediocre). There was something lacking in his interviews, watch the pre-match interview for Summerslam 1992, Davey Boy seems a little awkward at times, while Bret's pre-match interview was absolutely amazing!
Unfortunately, I think it was Davey's fascication with maintaining "the look" that prevented him from being WWE champion. Meaning, it was steroids that got he and Warrior fired in November 1992. He had a chance of becoming WCW champion in 1993, but a looming assault charge prevented that from ever happening.
Yeah - WCW abandoned Davey twice. Once over the assault charges (which he was quited of and proven innocent) and the second time when he was laying in a hospital bed due to their negligence and he almost died. They faxed him a letter saying he was fired due to lack of appearnces. Real classy.
And I also think that if he wasn't fired in 1992 he would have gone on to become champion. Its such a shame. While I'll never condone steriods, I do have sympathy for some of the wrestlers who used them (not Benoit).
Do you really think Vince would have put the big belt on Davey Boy? Guys like Bret and Yokozuna were really getting over.
It's too bad his IC title reign wasn't longer. It was planned, even before Wrestmania 8, that Shawn Michaels would get the IC title at the end of 1992, so Davey was just a go-between champion from Bret to Shawn. Vince originally wanted Bret to drop the IC title to Shawn, but it was Bret's idea to job to Davey in his home country at the Summerslam main even.
I heard different to that. I know Shawn was due to be champ, but from my understanding it wasn't supposed to be until 1993. And I also heard Davey was always planned to be IC champ and they wanted to keep the strap on him for at least 6 months (from my understanding he was always meant to get the title from Bret, only it was Brets idea to push them for the main event at Wembley). But who knows, I guess there are lots of stories regarding this.
I was always under the impression that Davey Boy lost the IC title because he was getting fired for steroids. However, I learned from reading Bret's book, Davey lost the IC belt because they couldn't have two babyface champions, given how Bret just won the world championship. So Davey dropping the IC title to Shawn came a little earlier than expected.
Bret also stated that it was his idea to drop the title to Davey at Summerslam.
Yeah, I was already aware what Bret said in his book - but Davey was already scheduled to successfully defend against the Mountie at the next PPV (the match was booked and advertised) so he couldn't have been due to drop it at the SNME when he did.
Also, Bulldog was fired at pretty short notice after his name was linked with Warrior. And Michaels was his next and last match at SNME (thats how quick it was) so it was decided he'd drop to Shawn (what else could they do?). And as for having 2 face champions? That isnt unheard of. I could list a load of times when thats been the case. And in interviews just before Davey's death he said he wasnt due to drop it when he did, until the steriods thing got him fired.
I imagine that Bret is probably wrong on this whole thing, though we can never know for sure. In his book Bret made no connection between Davey's getting fired and losing the IC belt, which I always thought was the reason he got fired.
Bret's wrong, I believe that. They were dangerlously low on heels at the end of 1992, so maybe that's why Vince wanted to even out the titles between faces and heels, but this theory seems far stretched.
I never new about Davey being scheduled to defend against The Mountie at Survivor Series.
What did The Mountie end up doing at Survivor Series?
Another thing, I knew Shawn Michaels was completely shocked when he found out he was getting the belt on SNME, so it wasn't booked in advance.
Yeah, I guess we'll never know for certain what really happened - too many different stories flying around. But I'm pretty sure he would have had it longer.
As for Survivour Series - The Mountie didn't wrestle (unless it was a dark match) due to this. Shawn was the IC champ and he went against Bret.
If you look on Wikipedia (not always accurate granted) it mentions that Bulldog was supposed to defend against the Mountie at this PPV as well.
That doesn't make any sense. They couldn't have two babyface Champions? All throughout WWF history there have been babyface Champions that have held titles simultaneously whether it be the Intercontinental title, or WWF Championship
"What a night it's been here in Sheffield... two title defences..."
Yeah. no surprise there. The big titles never changed hands in events held in England, for obvious reasons

I was there for this. Classic days.
I used to work with a guy who lived in the same village that Davey Boy Smith came from and his drinking pal was Davey Boys dad.
He said he came back over a lot and used to go for a pint in their working mens club.
Said he was a proper good bloke.
