  • Wow, Carl Pickens must be damn good

  • I ruled at this game . Way better than madden too bad it didn't stick around .

  • Gameplay definately held up over the years. Good game

  • i miss that game

  • he could go all the way lol

  • it a cold and snowy day here in cincinati lol...knocked off his feet look out he stuff ..he turns on the speed lol

  • I used to love running the halfback pass play because it burned the defense 100% of the time. And then the RB would end up with 500 yards passing or something stupid.

  • this game was awesome i loved the hits after the whistle and no penalty was called

  • Also! The thing that I loved about this game was, unlike other football games that came out during this area ('92-'97ish), the defender didn't always catch the player with the ball. Man I miss this game!

  • @ 0:47 - 1:00 Oh my! So nostalgic...just by looking at the Sega. I would give anything to have this game.

  • This is my favorite Genesis game, which is saying a lot because there are a lot of awesome Genesis games! Best with two players but even the solo game is a lot of fun. By the way, what difficulty level were you playing at?

  • @BonesJustice1994 I don't remember exactly but it might have been easy/beginner just for the sake of making a video.

  • @BonesJustice1994 Just looked and it was on Normal (1:01).

  • I don't care what anyone says: These games were way better than the Madden series. I absolutely loved the play-by-play and awesome camera angles. They just felt as though a whole lot more work was put into them.

  • Does anyone else here remember being able to run around the field endlessly? I remember fielding kickoffs on this game and being able to run around and around and around the field for literally an entire quarter without ever getting hit.

  • it's a cold & snowy day here in cincinnati... :)

  • Can you tell me wich is the best football game from these: Tecmo Super bowl 3, prime time nfl or this game. They are at the same price, but i never played with any football games before, and i want one and i want the best from these three.

  • the sega console was the best for sports games. montana football, nhl 95 and 93 , espn baseball tonight with boomer, my all time favorite baseball game, NBA JAM , madden 95 , and the mutant league games, there also was this golf game made by electronic arts that I can not remember name.

  • @jasemst3k Mutant League games were awesome. PGA Tour Golf (by EA, I think what you're referring to) on the Genesis was the greatest. The gameplay has held up well over the years.

  • Is this the best of the Joe Montana football games on the Genesis? Want to get the best one to try and I'm not sure which

  • @ioport Between the ones I played (this and '95), I enjoyed this ('94) the best. I don't know if it was because I was used to '94, but when I rented '95 way back when, I wasn't too impressed and I wanted to go back to playing '94. This game is cheap and you definitely won't go wrong getting it. It never gets old.

  • @Voshempa Thanks for the info. Didn't know there was a 95 version. I was actually trying to figure whether to grab 94, Sports Talk II (only one in the series with a side view of the field), or the original, which I understand was done by the same guy who did the first Madden. You're right though. Genesis sports games are practically free. I'll just have to get them all and decide :)

  • @ioport Actually, 94 has the side view of the field, too. I prefer that view because you can see your wideouts and further downfield. The Montana series was the only one that allowed you to choose camera angles at that time (except the first one). You can even play from behind the defense! You can change views every play or replay, too. We always let the offense choose the view angle - I like the sideline view but other players would often choose the behind-the-QB view.

  • @Voshempa Thanks dude. Just got a complete copy of 94! Can't wait to try it.

  • @ioport Joe montana football the 1st one is the best

  • Awww! U didn't let the opening play out .... Dah da. Joe.

  • How did they get Stephen Hawking to call the play by play?

  • I can't remember how I did it but I used to call a rushing play and when I tried to hand it to the back the game said "draw to the tackle he throws it away scramble for the ball. ' the ball would be fumbled and all the players would run pass it until someone recovered it.

  • no offense, but how many joints did he smoke before he filmed this? haha. Dude, this is classic -- thank you for posting!!! Try to post one where he fumbles the ball " Heeee droppppped it ---scrambles for the ball --- Unnnnnnbelievable" please!!

  • no offense, but how many joints did he smoke before he filmed this? haha.

  • Wow it has been forever since I played this. I must have been like 8 when I last played this and that was 10 years ago. too bad the sega broke

  • This was one of my favorite games on the Genesis. I got so good at it I'd score 100+ points a game. I have my Sega stored away along with all my games. Seeing this makes me want to play it. Thanks for posting!!

  • @MrSaturdayNight7 No problem, thanks for watching. Yeah this game is worth pullin' the hardware back out for sure. It's amazing that it still plays and entertains so well after all these years.

  • and boom goes the dynamite?

  • he could go all the waaaaaay.

  • One of my favorite Football games

  • 4:40 lol

  • Who knew? EA made Joe Montana I

What followed became one of the biggest secrets in video game history: EA built a "Montana" game for Sega that was designed to compete with "Madden." Sort of.

"We made sure it was totally inferior," Hawkins said.

Working from the "Madden" code base, EA removed the 3-D field, slashed the pro-style playbook from 113 plays to 13 and added cartoony, big-headed player graphics. "Joe Montana Football" was a hit, but "John Madden Football" was an industry game-changer.

  • Comment removed

  • @cbaldwinjr Actually the original Joe Montana football game was designed by the same guy that made the original John Madden game. I'm not sure how big the playbook was supposed to be but the final game had 48 plays and I think it was actually a better game than John Madden even though it was the same game engine. It was also better than NFL 94 and the other follow ups in the Montana franchise. I have 2 video clips of the original game in my videos if you want to check it out.

  • CALL AN AM-BOO-NANCE !

sometimes the crappiest players in the game were the fastest haha

  • Thanks for posting. I remember that this was the first video sports game that I ever played where there was an actual announcer. It was great game!

  • @Billyjoey77 Further proof that time does indeed fly.

  • Joe Montana Football '94

    World Series Baseball

    NBA Action

    Greatest Heavyweights

    X-Men 2: Clone Wars

  • @DarthSephiroth144 No problem. It might take me a couple weeks to get it recorded and edited for here, so just keep that in mind. If you don't see it up, I haven't forgottten, it'll be up sometime.

  • @DarthSephiroth144 Haha, yeah I'll see what I can do. I'll let you know if and when it's up.

  • That game fuckin blew. I never screamed at my Genises more....

  • that dude just hit em after TD.. lol

  • best football game ever!! shited on madden!

  • That is my all-time favorite football game. I always thought is was way better than Madden. NFL '95 wasn't as good though. It just didn't have the same fel as the other ones.

  • Thanks man! I haven't heard those sound bites in a lonnnng time!

  • @Mickeydoll95 No problem. Brings back memories when I hear them, too.

  • straight up the middle

  • Im thinking of starting a City Wide League or at least a city wide Tournament ...This game is so good and we need to find out who is the best in each of their regions. !!

  • I always thought that this was superior to Madden in some ways, in fact I still have my original copy. What confuses me about passing is when choosing a receiver at the line of scrimmage (the yellow select arrow using the 'B' button) and then snap the ball, I can't pass no matter how many times I hit the 'A' button. I'll have to experiment more.

Great video though, nothing like 16-bit sports games!

  • Hmm, that's very strange. As long as an actual receiver is selected, I don't see why it would keep you from throwing. I guess you'll have to utilize a run heavy offense until the problem is solved. Good luck and hope you figure it out.

  • @Voshempa

I'll play a couple of games tonight and try to figure it out, it's all part of the fun anyway!

    Thanks.

  • I was KING of this game. Dominated every single one of my family members and friends by way of a glitch. Pick the Buffalo Bills, right? Find the play called "Flip Weak" take it to the edge/outside along the sidelines. Touchdown pretty much every time lol. Once everyone figured out it was my bread and butter play, I wasn't allowed to pick Buffalo anymore...

  • Nice. I'm gonna have to try that one out.

  • @Voshempa here's an even easier one just read wat the defense selects if they pick a play where theres bubbles around the dots then pick a long pass if there are yellow lines going from each player (at the select play screen) just pick a play and audible "A" easy first down. if u see they picked a man coverage(bubbles) then Audible "C"

  • @MrKeepnit100 Next time I pop this cart in, I'll give that a try. Should make for quite an offensive game!

  • @Voshempa its easier with the Eagles because they had Randall Cunningham

  • bst football game ever!!!!fuck madden!!!

  • oh god takes me back soooooo far i love it mayne great video

  • Thanks and glad you liked it. I wasn't aware this game so popular with gamers back in the day (until I posted and saw the comments). This game was one of a kind.

  • I always found it difficult trying to throw a pass without it being intercepted.

  • It took some getting used to, but once you got it, the games tipped more in your favor. When I started playing, I would find certain pass plays that worked and just stuck with those until I mastered them and then moved on.

  • This is a classic football game. The commentary was great and the best part of the game. It was funny hearing him say:

"The Browns set up for the field goal, on first down and.. UH-OH, WHAT A MISTAKE!"

  • Haha, yeah those never get old. The commentary was golden.

  • wow... the memories!!!!

I had mastered the 3 step drops in this game and the quick slants!!!

Definitely one of my favorite games of all time

  • Love this football game definitly a classic

  • it was so easy to run back kickoffs for a TD in this game!!! wow, the memories!!!

  • It's 2nd down and i dont believe it!...lol

  • Wow, I loved this game when it was brand new...thanks for posting.

  • hahahahaha so glad u put this up. My brother and I still quote this game all the time. "It's beginning to kk-kk snow!" OR when you try a punt formation on first down..."It's first down and kk-kk WHAT A MISTAKE!" ahahaha I miss the good days of gaming

  • for it's time, the commentary is great.

  • For sure. It was still young, but I wouldn't have guessed we would be where we are now with commentary. I would have figured that we would be better off in that category than we are now.

  • I didn't even play this game until recently over the summer and honest to say, I am glad I picked up this game for .99 (Even though I am 20), but this has much better commentary than Madden 09 (which I have for 360) and Maddens in general.

  • Although a little silly at times, the commentary is definitely entertaining. Nice decision to pick this one up.

  • thanks, Voshempa...I am trying to get a lil adjusted to playing it, but I have a blast playing it.

  • Maybe by now you're more adjusted to it. The game is quite fun so the learning curve is well worth it!

  • Yeah, I've played this game, it sucks badly. The original Joe Montana Football game was so much better, even though 94 has a better playbook, the original is still better. I don't know why they changed the game but the original was a lot different than the follow ups. I really wish they would have kept the game the same and just made improvements on it. It had so much potential to be better than the Madden games on the Genesis.

  • I don't remember the original as well. As for the Madden games, I never was a fan of those back in the day. I didn't start liking them until 2000s rolled around. I was into SEGA's NFL series a lot.

  • Well, I think Madden 98 on the Genesis is the best 16-bit football game ever made. But if Sega had just improved upon the original Joe Montana game, it would have been better than Madden. I've only been able to find one clip of the original on youtube. Put keywords 'joe montana sega' in the search and its the clip that says 'Gameplay: Joe Montana Football - Jap Megadrive' about half way down the page. Its poor quality but you might recognize the game.

  • I mean, the video is poor quality but the game rocks!! I don't know why sega changed it... they had a great game to improve on here.

  • Who Dey!

Dang, I don't remember Harold Green and Eric Ball being that dominating. haha

  • Anytime a game can present them Bungals as dominating, then you know you have a classic on your hands. Who Dey!

  • My Bro just sent me this vid, MY GOD! Blast from the past, we used to play Joe Montana 94 all the time. It would start with one game than best of three, than best of 5, than best of seventhen the next thing you know 4 days have passed we have beards and havent eaten, let alone sleep or use the bathroom! Ahhh Memories!

  • lol, I know just what you mean.

  • my first sports game for sega , brings back memories , thanks for posting

  • Thanks for watching/commenting. SEGA was king when it came to sports games.

  • " He Shanked It" after a missed field gold classic

  • Yeah, and "He could go all the way" is a good one, too.

  • This was my first sports game ever......if I find a genesis and this game. fuck Madden 10 or that shit, i'll play that more..just a piece of childhood I'll always relive.....fuck new consoles, I want the ones I grew up with, and i'll play those more than anything.

  • It was my first sports title, too. This game definitely stood the test of time. It's still very playable today. If you get a Genesis soon, hit up half. com for a good deal on the game.

  • I just bought it on ebay and a genesis to go with it..

    Now childhood will be relived!

  • i picked up JM for 3 bucks.

  • Niiice.

  • I loved all the Montana games. They were the bridge between the tecmo bowl games and the madden games. Every player was #11. There is a level of nostalgia with these old games. They didn't have the graphics of today's games, but they were fun to play nonetheless.

  • Absolutely. The nostalgia factor is great.

  • I SO MISS THIS GAME.

  • It sure was great. After all these years, it still holds up pretty well, too.

  • i feel like im 12 again----keep em' coming. I wish deion sanders football still worked on my sega

  • Haha, that's never a bad thing. I don't think I played Deion Sanders Football. Looks like I'm gonna have to search for that one and try it out.

  • it has the same set up/gameplay as montana 94--so, its great man

  • Nice. I actually ordered it yesterday, so within a week I'll be able to get into it.

  • WHAT! Where did you find it!? Let me know- my game freezes up after the first game of the season so there isint much i can to with it...

  • half. com and there are a couple on there that are less than 2 bucks and still brand new, factory sealed.

  • I'll give that a try next time. I liked the hail mary (not sure if that's what they call it in here though). A double tap of the hike/pass button and you're golden. I did it in the vid. It's the play at 4:50.

  • I loved this game it was crazy how you would catch the ball and it would zoom in I would have the feel horizontal though I loved it.

  • I usually sucked pretty bad when I had it on horizontal. It very cool that they let you have a choice.
