actually, they cought one in the late 90's i think. he was drunk inside a telephone booth one rainy night. he was dying of cancer and told the police, do you even know who i am?
@CrazyGreaseFan Actually, no one is known to have successfully escaped Alcatraz. It was shut down in 1963 by RFK because of the cost to run the facility. I have also heard that in later years, the rules on the island weren't so draconian.
Mruhl316 they shut down because someone escaped and when someone escapes it's a High chance more can escape so bye bye Alcatraz and shut down and hello museum
The reason it was shutdown was because of financial difficulties iwth supporting it. There was talk of shutting it down from 1946 to the late to early sixties. That reasoning was because of the battle of the rock in 1946 when several prisoners attempted an escape but were stopped. As a result the prisoners locked up several guards in cells and randomly shot them. while guards tried to take their cell block back. US Marines were eventually called and it was the Marines who restored order.
Excellent documentary, thanks for uploading! Clint Eastwood's Alcatraz movie was cool, I remember watching when I was a kid. I think it's time they remake another Escape from Alcatraz movie.
@slazzer145 you almost got it..La Isla de los Alcatraces," which translates as "The Island of the Pelicans" from the archaic Spanish alcatraz, "pelican",
I'm a history guy. This is great stuff...I recommend taking the tour if you are in the area. Although it was pouring down rain, I loved every second of it!!!
maybe someday you go there too. then you will find a great many interesting things. you'll have a lot of new friends and enemies, unique food and some rather odd bed mates. that sound good for you?
i got more 411 on the paranormal on alcatraz prison so its helpful but not all AND NO IT WOULD NOT BE GOOD TO TEAR DOWN PEICE OF HISTORY OF PARANORMAL AND THE PARANORMAL WHO LIVED THEIR WILL BE VERY ANGRY so u would not wanna do that.[Just Saying]
Very interesting documentary. I´ve visited Alcatraz 10 years ago and shot there a documentary around Robert Stroud. I just posted it as an video answer. Apologize, it´s in german. The film has won several prizes on german amateur movie maker festivals.
Phil, just inspected my harddisk and found the original written german commentary for my Alcatraz film. What I can do for you, is to translate the commentary and put on YT as subtitles. Dubbing will be more problematic, I´ve edited the movie in an old Premiere version, which I can not install anymore. It depends on the purpose for what you would need the film. I can import the avi, speak the commentary in english, make an voice over, export it and upload it once again or send you a DVD.
@PhilsMovies But the documentary covered Alcatraz prior to 1934, also. It should either be 1934-1963, the years of Alcatraz, or the years that are covered.
see! it says in the video the video i watched be4 said to 1963 so it clearly states that it was abondened from 1963 from this day forward. the prison had the most baddest prisoners such as,murrders, muggers, robbers. and if u think im 5 im 12 and im good when it comes to paranormal but those are the basic faxts about alcatrwaz prison
Oh yes I am quite serious. It would be cheaper to tear Alcatraz down to the ground and rebuild then it would be to open it up agian. Further, because of UN mandate, the cells would be to small today.
I heard there is a movement to tear the prison buildings down and build some type of park. Something more becoming than the stark looking building that currently exists.
Alcatraz and just the journey to San Francisco was just awesome. That feeling being across the bay and just knowing about the history, and the fact that people actually lived there.
No one in recorded history has ever been attacked by a shark in San Francisco Bay. In 1960 there was a guy killed by a shark at the mouth of the bay at Baker's Beach. But, inside the Golden Gate it has never happened, never!
The only sharks inside the bay are harmless bottom feeders. Great whites stay farther out to sea where the seals and sea lions are. However, guards encouraged the lie about the sharks because most inmates came from areas far from the sea. They were used to freshwater ponds or little swimming holes. Saltwater bodies were the domain of sharks which was why the Navy and merchant marine used to have trouble recruiting away from the coastal states.
i'm reading a book at the moment on Alcatraz called "escape from Alcatraz" by don Denavi. In the chapter i'm reading its talking about if Frank Lee Morris , JW (John) and Clarence Anglin had drowned how long would it take for their bodies to surface. They say if it is bitten or if it hit a rock the body will never surface and the they talked about the 1 shark in the water 1 no more have been recorded. i'm guessing its the same or something else.
Yes there are sharks in San Francisco bay. And the Alcatraz officials made sure the inmates knew it. But what they did NOT tell the inmates what the sharks in the bay were bottom feeders and NOT man eaters. There was also the myth that they dould catch sharks and cut the fins off of one side of their body causing them to only swim circls around the island. This was not true at all.
I have not been to Alcatraz in 20 years. I do hope to go soon. And as far as it being haunted, there are some who say it is, but I personally do not belive in ghosts.
I just viewed your Alcatraz vids; damn fine work you've done. So informing, so well shot/narrated. I really enjoyed sitting back/watching....KEEP UP THE AWSOME WORK

Alcatraz isn't exactly an escape proof prison. It was actually considered to be difficult to escape from because of the bay.
