  • can someone explain what this anime is about?

  • Lady, I think maybe you should just fulfil the prophecy and have done with it.

  • Sister has cracked,

parents are as secretive as the CIA,

    friend is sleeping with teacher.

    Totally normal life, sounds like.

  • HER PARENTS. Ugh. Piss me off.

  • Her sister is kinda hot.

  • a god from internet and we are not real..

  • is it just me or is her hair getting darker?

  • I don't like eating noises, they make me feel sick :O

That was creepy... everyone disappeared, THIS is how girls get premature wrinkles! :I

    Damn stress.

  • This video is most popular with:

    Female 13-17

    Male 45-54

    Female 18-24

    Whaaaaaa?

  • I talk with my dolls too.

  • Lain do have two precious eyes.

  • I'm not sure if anyone has posted this as a comment, but does anyone else think that The Knights in SEL remind you of Anonymous in real life? Maybe they are worse, but still that keeps popping up in my head.

  • For an anime that wants to stress how important communication is in the real world, many of the characters in the show can't even do that right, except Lain's friends.

  • @MissVelveteen

I couldn't agree more, I'm always like what the HELL is wrong with her family!!

anyways..I think sometimes they were just trying to pull off some horror tricks , but still this doesn't mean it's not a good anime thou =]

  • @rayan059 common asian family who don't really are and are distant lol

  • @MissVelveteen actually watashi isnt formal for a girl. it is for a boy however

  • I wonder why people keep using "watashi" to address themselves. Isn't watashi the formal version?

  • @QuikVidGuy Watashi means I, me,.... i dunno its mostly used in Japanese... at least that's what our teachers told us.

  • @QuikVidGuy boku is only used by males so watashi is normal for females

  • maybe she should fulfill the prophecy... naw probably not

  • I wonder if this was the original "creepy existential cyber-powers manhandling children's psychology" series. Y'know, how they always ask really simple questions that a child might ask, and the context makes it seems very strange.

  • i agree with both her "parents'" theories

  • everyone in this show must be tripping on something REALLY strong......

  • I feel terrible. I saw the blinking eyes on the screen, and you know what came to mind? Surely a philosophical or otherwise meaningful interpretation! But no, all I could think of was Magibon.

    Konnichiwa minna-san. Magibon desu.

    XD.

  • for some reason Lain's sister reminds me of Ino from Naruto...

  • that's what I was thinking too :O

  • the siLence is creepy!! :S

  • woah it like kills your brain once the series goes back to reality like when they are sitting at the dinner table lol

  • Creepiest fucking part.

  • the body exists only to verify one's existence, creepy

  • Thank you soooo much for this post!!!! I subscribed to your channel. Keep em coming!

  • dont ask if someoness theree! halll fukkingg asss!!!!!!!!!!!

  • imm starttinng too gett itt : D

  • SUPER CREEPY!

  • it reminds me a little of kingdom hearts, like at the begining :P

  • and finally, the sister, what's her beef... she's sorta been the most normal (or at least representing our real world) character so far. She's also (or maybe therefore) been unaffected by the Wired. The God in the wired (see 2nd post) wants everyone, or at least her, to be a part of the Wired. "Fulfill the prophecy" appears to mean "do what I say." She doesn't understand, so the God attacks her.

Or she could be just insane.

  • I like the last theory since she appears to be suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and MPD

  • or perhaps she could just say fuck it, if you cant beat them join it XD

  • 唯一まともなのはお姉ちゃんだけやね・・・・・

  • Does anyone know what the song used in Lain's discussions with the doll, her mom and her father is called?

  • it might be on a pirated bootleg cd but thats extremely hard to find on the web. i found a russian site with it up for download years ago but i had 56k and was only able to download "track 44." its not official released.

i sure wish i had it downloaded though.

  • Someone on YT used to have the entire bootleg album uploaded. Sadly, their account was suspended.

Oh and the song is track number 14 with the Japanese title of "デウスのテーマ".

  • Comment removed

  • ah cool thanks. i did find a torrent in good health so the song is out there - finally after 9 years i can get the track :D

  • I need to get out more, plus I don't even understand what is going on.

  • Out of all the mysteries of Lain i found,,, ;O; This is the only episode where i cannot simply figure out what happen... I got 3 ways to see it but can anyone explain this to me ;;O;; Poor Lain's Sister

  • You've probably figured this out too, but...

The discussions between Lain and the strange entities (the doll, the action figure, mom, dad) appear to be Lain's imagination, thought process, or daydreams, to figure out the wired and how the world works. The doll tells us that the world's events are always conceived by pre-written by prophecies. The action figure says that events are always made in cohesion with eachother.

  • (@Kyaksa)

The mom tells us that real life with its people is actually a virtual world for the Wired with its information (the two terms switch meanings: reality is now the electric representation of the true entity that is the Wired). When Lain asks if she's the real mom, the she leaves with disappointment because didn't get her point: the "real" world doesn't matter. The dad discusses the wired and reveals that god, or a godly figure, that makes the prophecies may have been born from the wired.

  • wait so the sister can do the same thing Lain can?

  • 6:33 Interesting tip: You can recreate that writing using candlewax and any dark liquid.

I did it to my BF last week, after asking him to rent this series.XD

  • oh thats mean, and such a good Idea!

  • omg alice has a ipod touch! even though this anime came out in 98...my friend has one.........hate that damn thing.

We could talk about greenland and this guy would be looking at it on google earth outta nowhere, then we talk about anime, and...

(him:y'know higurashi is confusing. us:no, it's blah blah blah. 5 mins. into the convo-him: well I'm watching it right now.

we look over and this mofos on youtube.

  • XD haha your right! ^^ haha

  • What I find ironic is that we're all watching this on our computers! lol.

  • Yeah, I thought that, too. In episode four, I think, when she stares at her Navi's screen and doesn't really notice that the rest of her room is dark, that's what happens to me often, too. xD

  • well, this show is best watched in the dark anyway :)

  • @funkymcbean NOT IRONY!

  • XSasukeKunX-

No, it's a certain tune, I was asking because the church bells on the largest church in my town plays it every hour.

  • "The body exists only to verify one's own existence"

    Right out of Noein, people.

  • noein, you mean that anime that came out in 2006?

  • lain's sister is freaking OUT!!!

  • I like this anime... But I don't get it. XD My logic is too sound. lol. We know it is, therefore it is. Things are, because they are, what happens will happen, it's destiny. We live, we die and go to heaven, or hell, and that's that. So... Could someone please explain this to me???? I don't get it. XD

  • Well to put aside my own beliefs and try to reflect what Lain is about. =P

It's like the matrix only backwords. Reality is the illusion in this case, and the Wired is some kind of new reality where everyone takes the next "step" in evolving.

I dont agree with the logic my self. =P evolution for one is more like 2 of a kind make one like their kind. In other words, if it lives to procreate then only those "kind" live.

  • Or.. there is nothing at the end of this life and you lay in a black, empty, thoughtless void. Who's really to say that belief in any kind of afterlife is plausible or even logical? Or even the concept of destiny. The idea that something bigger than you or I controls the paths we take. It's ludicrous to say that, before experiencing every aspect of life (and yes, death has a part to play) you truly know this life. For all we know.. we truly know nothing at all.

  • the logical thing to do is to not interpret this series literally. the things presented to the viewer are biased, allegorical, and only representations of the story. rewatch it and don't believe that everything presented to us happened as it was shown.

  • yes its similar to boogiepop phantom in that way. both brilliant shows.

  • What is the name of the tune that starts at 0:17

  • lloerk-

    Uhm, a school bell? :D

  • This stuff is Groovy Pants.

  • this is a little creepy...XD...COOOL

  • That OS has a much better Ease of Access service than Vista :P

  • somebody worked on a UNIX based system looking like the OS from lain its called LainOS you can find the site trough the Wikipedia article of serial experiments lain

  • Lain's NAVI has a Psyche processor. This processor pushes a 133mhz base-clock to 400mhz, interpolating the memory controller at a send-rate of 1.6GB/sec. Do you think a processor like that could do the full-motion feature? It won't still be fast enough, right?

  • how do you know all that? Does something like that actually exist?

  • You mean the Psyche processor? No, I don't think it exists. I found this information in the Lain's Illustration Artbook. Maybe it's just a concept from ABe Yoshitoshi.

  • Most of the OS, Programs, and Computers used in Lain are based on actual Macintosh products. The Producers of this show were all Mac fans.

  • I'm so confused.

    WHAT PROPHESY?

  • Um, is anybody else as confused as I am? O_O

  • yes, we're waiting for the plot to emerge. just go with it.

  • lain's mom scares me for some reason

  • I understand that.

  • I think Lain is the same as Suzumiya Haruhi, tough I don't understand the split personality part

  • same in what way?

  • she's God, yet she doesn't realise it

  • realize!!

I prefer the American way of English

  • what do you mean?

  • the ize ending is more generally the American way of spelling, whilst ise is more the British/English, whatever you prefer, way of spelling.

  • haha that's news to me

  • maybe lain's a knight(or the knight) working through hallucinations and making other people see them? but she has split personality or is playing dumb? that my guess oo

  • wat procy? was i not paying aation?

  • Poor Mika...

I think SEL is right. When you think about it, the internet is a world, isn't it? Does anybody really control the internet? It's not even real, you can't touch the internet... could all just an illusion...

  • you know,Everything we feel is just an electrical impulse sensed by our nerves and translated by our brain to say "it hurts" or "its cold"or anything else. This is why consciousness is unundestable : If someone goes mad,he may see some things we can't and heat some things we don't,but they'll be as real as ours. We're all nothing but an elctricity random stuff.and its the same for everything.

  • y'know, not to say that you're not being intelligent, but I wish somebody would come up with some new philosophy sometime; I do believe people have been having these ideas for ages: if all we have to decide what is real is our senses, which are simply electrical pulses (just the same as that of the internet, which is in many ways an illusion), then how can we know what is real? those who try to define what is real, can't be trusted as they are merely provided by our senses, as is this very idea.

  • Yea,Mika seems to be lonely all the time.

  • Mika feels so alone.

  • I watched the first four episodes of this show sober. But now I'm a little "under the influence" and it's definitely a lot better. I think it was meant to be watched this way!

  • Same with me, a friend of mine recommended it, I was sceptical at first, now i got hooked.

  • god i hate lain's mom

  • i can't believe an anime scared me. They made a really freaky story about the internet.

  • Mika reminds me of Mao from blood+

  • Mika's cute

  • I think the animation is just fine.

  • not fine superb

  • For a Twelve year-old,I think I've been following this series well. But now I'm lost. This episode is so confusing.

  • This series is all right, but this animation bothers me for some reason...

  • This episode screams BAD SHROOMS!!!

  • It's like a whole marathon of the Twilight Zone is mixed into each episode.

  • nothing ..

  • what is a prophecy?

  • fulfill ......... the ........ prophecy .......

  • freaky

  • this is like .hack!!! but weirder but i love this show!!!

  • XD I really hit the nail on the head with my comment on the previous part.

  • creepy part...

  • wat da hell is wrong wi ther sis??

  • Lain's sister is becoming more and more catatonic(?) . . .

  • im addicted to this i cant stop watching it

  • ok so this is something like matrix.

does the doll, the knight and the mom represent something?

  • 05:15 there is "lol" on the bilding

  • hooked - more please!
