I absolutely love The Shining. But don't know why people are so shocked at the use of the n word. That's how they referred to black people, unfortunately. It's not a good thing but it's certainly nothing new. This scene is during the late 20's and this movie was made during the late 70's and released in1980.
@Danihellokittynyc years ago in the 80's when this movie aired on national tv, the ''n' word was not omitted. However, now when Grady tells Jack his son is bringing an outside party into this situation, Jack says, ''who''? Grady then says '' a no-good cook".
It's also a beautiful time warp, because, the songs from Ray Noble and his Orchestra, are from the 1930s, the picture seen at the end is one of the 1920s.
in the movie, in the bar room scene, it shows jack drinking jack daniel's whiskey. hmmmm. jack was drinking jack daniels. i don't recall whether the original novel showed jack drinking jack daniel's whiskey, but i do recall that the original novel said that the real name of jack was john daniel torrance. thus, we have jack daniel drinking jack daniel's whiskey.
whenever this movie is shown on AMC or any other network tv the ''n'' word is dubbed by another word. In some standards, the ''n '' word is almost like using the ''f'' bomb
Mr. Grady - "dad" from A Clockwork Orange, multiple characters from O Lucky Man!. Great British character actor. He can stand down Jack's manic persona with a simple stare.
this is my favorite horror film [one of my favorite horror films] that tv-miniseries that came out in 1995 was crap with that guy from the nbc-tv show ''wings''steven weber.
@chinesepig7 It's supposed to mean he and grady became the same person.
Grady chopping up his kids with an axe is what Jack tried to do to Danny and Wendy.
It's hard to explain, but let's just say every caretaker that went mad in the hotel was the same person. hence the line "You've always been the caretaker".
the delbert ghost man is so deceptive. charles grady was the real dude's name, but delb's trying to confuse jack into doing bad things! he gave him unreliable memories, put in front of him all the wrong choises, and he's warping his mind. man, i've seen the movie high so many times, it alllll makes sense to me!
Well if you look at the picture at the end of the film the date is something like 1921 or 1929, at that time it was perfectly exeptable to say 'Niggers'. By the way I loved how you showed out rage towards racism by using a racist slur 'Pinkys' By hey I don't play the race card because I'm more mature than that.
Wonderful.

the n word is appropriate for this scene. it is being used in this scene by a demonic spirit who has possessed Jack.

I always thought Grady had said, "Meager," not Nigger.

Did you know that your son is trying to bring an outside party into this situation? Did you know that?
Your son...has a very great talent. I don't think you are aware how very great it is...but he is attempting to use that very talent against your will.
Your son, has a cell phone, Mr. Torrence.

who would paint a bathroom blood red?

For me at least, what makes this scene all the more creepier is the sound of the orchestra in the background.

somone commented this before i remember.
look at the camera angels first it shows how jack is on top.
then you see the full face of the butler. Then it shows how he is on top and jack is small. So he is conrolling jack pretty much.
