I showed up at the Bell Tower, armed with around 80 dusk balls, 40 ultra balls, and 20 or so heavy balls. That's 140 balls - you'd think the sheer number of them would eventually catch this thing. 8 restarts later, I caught this mofo with my last dusk ball.

This theme was what kept my sanity intact. xD

I think fighting Ho-oh in Heart Gold is way better then fighting Lugia in Soul Silver. I mean, come on, you climb a tower that is a national landmark, make a mere legend appear at the highest point in the town full of the people who have only heard it's name if even that, and then fight the thing right in front of their very eyes. Immediately after, you return to the surface, with the myth in the palm of your hand. Lugia's scenario is cool, but you just can't beat Ho-oh's.

I've been playing since the beginning. I agree with you on Gen 4 being better - the remakes build upon the perfection that Johto was. Gen 5 was amazing as well. I've always loved Lugia better, and my favorite legendary for that matter, Silver was my first game, (Pokemon or not,) and Power of One will always be on of my most beloved Pokemon movies. However, I adore Ho-Oh as well.

Especially since I recently started on an art project that includes Ho-Oh and Lugia. It's coming out beautifully, and applying realism to Ho-Oh does wonders for it. (basing it off of cranes, secretary birds, egrets, Golden Eagles, and old-world vultures) I'm smitten.

I have both versions. Heart Gold is better than Soul Silver because it has a better selection of Pokemon and the Ho-Oh fight made more sense than the Lugia one. Also speaking as a veteran from the original games, a player that knows what they're doing WILL smoke Lugia in a fight when using Ho-Oh. I've yet to see Lugia win straight up against Ho-oh in the original games and I imagine that it would be the same if it was possible to use legendaries in this game.

My copy of Gold (from ten years ago) still has the level 70 Ho-oh that smashed a level 70 Lugia straight up in a one on one. Before that when I had a maxed out roster it had a level 100 Ho-Oh that took on a (you guessed it) level 100 Lugia. Ho-oh is just extremely fierce even though Lugia has the defense and type advantage, Ho-oh just hits hard and I believe faster too. I also have a Meganium that will match Typhlosion due to it's ability to heal and use mudslap.

Both can learn fly and Ho-oh has safeguard. They both can also learn rock throw and ancient power is just as devastating to Lugia as Hydro Pump is to Ho-oh. Ho-oh has the attack power and speed advantage though.

Have you seen a Ho-oh VS Lugia fight between two veteran players though? EVERYBODY on the playground usually beat Lugia with either their own Lugia, their starter, or you guessed it Ho-oh. We even had straight up 1 on 1 matches to prove which one was better, using Lugias caught in Silver and Ho-ohs caught in Gold. It can turn into a tactics game (picking when to use safeguard or fly, etc.) but typically speaking Ho-oh came out on top 4 out of 5 times.

EDIT: Actually Lugia is the one with the speed advantage, but it isn't there by much. Typically speaking I've seen Ho-ohs move faster than Lugia though after some level grinding. Both types can become a problem to the other if they know when to take to the skies to dodge enemy attacks.

Actually...

Lugia was meant to be a defensive Pokemon. It's about the training you give it. If you were to max out/near max out Lugia's defensive stats, then Ho-oh wouldn't even put a dent into Lugia without a super-effective move + STAB, which Ho-oh doesn't have.
