My grandmother actually wrote the lyrics to this song. She wrote it about my grandfather when she was pregnant with my mother, who was born in 54. She sent it in to an agency to be published, but my grandfather would not give her the $20 to get it a patent I guess you would say. Anyways, she is gone now but had the original of what she sent in, it's probably somewhere in the house. So, since there was no legal binding to the lyrics, it was open for anyone to take.
There are moments in this when Roy seems to make time stop completely. It certainly has a quality which could lend itself to ridicule, where if it was anyone else it could seem like shmalttz. But Roy's got something, where you can see his greatness right before it happens. 'Fingers On Fire' should be watched next, because this guy was the real thing from every angle. Volcanic virtuosity. You can totally see the madness in his face!
One of the greatest artists of any genre! Roy is, as was earlier posted, a national treasure! There'll never be another like him. Sadly, as other greats of the past, the world won't know what it has until he's gone.............. Glad to see him FINALLY inducted into the country music hall of fame. IT'S ABOUT TIME!
This was definitely not 1956...the song was written by Bill Anderson in 1960, and Clark's Capitol release wasn't for three more years. Also, Clark is playing a Fender Jazzmaster, a model that was not available until 1959.
This is more likely one of Clark's early appearances on The Tonight Show or Shindig!, between 1964 and 1967.
What is a "best singer" anyway? Roy's voice is perfect for his projects. Can you see Pavarotti in 'The Who'? How about Pavarotti on Hee Haw? It's all relative. There's no "best" guitar or "best" microphone. How could Roy have better voice? An listener is free to choose what he likes, but it's relative to the person's taste. Roy's voice is exactly as it should be and his delivery is spot on. Thanks so much for posting this incredible performance.
Beautiful song.. all men should listen to the words .. 'I had you right on the tips of my fingers". and then you can become complacent and end up lonely old men.. Listen to the words men of the world.. from a women that knows what she is talking about.. he let me slip right through his hand, ..friendly advise.. ignore... if you are that confident in your relationship.. but there is a reason for this beautiful song..It,s a reminder of what is precious in your life.
my father was in a band together with roy and jimmy dean in the early 50s in washington dc.If any one has any info please let me know for my dad has passed on now.
If you would like to give me your Dad's name etc. I'm going to Las Vegas in November to see Roy and Dwight Yoakam and more than likely will be talking to both. My third cousin was Minnie Pearl so we'll have lot's to talk about. I'd be glad to ask Roy about your Dad. Please give me your email address as well.
I was in DC in the fifties... Jimmy and patsy played a saturday night show called Barn Dance that was actually in Maryland... But Jimmy wasn't in a band. They hosted acts like Roy, and many others.
Sorry the name of the show was Town and country time, Both Patsy Cline and Roy Clark got their starts with Dean, who eventually fired Clark, his lead guitarist, for his chronic tardiness. Dean replaced Clark with Billy Grammer. Patsy Cline and Dean were good friends during the run of the Town Country Time TV show in the mid-50s.
An early version of Roy Clark doing Bill Anderson composition Tips of My Fingers. I had the honor of seeing Bill Anderson perform this twice in Saratoga Springs this year. A very nice version by Roy---which program is this from?
I disagree he was one of the best country singers. Listen to him sing "Yesterday" his voice was smooth and mellow and strong when the music and lyrics called for strength. He was a master.
I did not mean to say his voice was bad.. just not one of the best in country mmusic. He has a good voice, but can not compare to some of the greats in country music history. But no one can say they were a better musician than he.
After some research it looks like this guitar was a gift from Leo Fender after someone stole everything from the back of Roy's station wagon. This was while he was recording his first album in 1959. He ended up using a borrowed Gibson ES-335 in the studio, but apparently used the Jazzmaster on this television appearance and also an album cover in 1963 (The Lightning Fingers of Roy Clark).
I used an interview of Roy from VintageGuitar, pic from TheRecordCollectorsGuild.
This is a great video. It looks like a Fender Jazzmaster he's playing which is supposed to have had early prototypes as early as fall of 1957 and was first introduced at the 1958 NAMM show? You sure about the date? Great post regardless :)

When there's talk of great guitar players, you dont hear his name much. But I think Roy Clark may have been the best there was.

Couldn't agree more. I think he's the most under rated player in all genres of music. Roy should be declared a national ( or world! ) treasure.
