Poor sound, poor lyrics (generally), and the most awful production. Load & ReLoad were great albums if you look past the fact that it is "Metallica". My opinion of course.

Production was so awful, that's true. But riffs were fabulous, you can't ignore that. Thrash like in 80's simply do not exist in 21th century, because all that has changed. You can't just go up there, criticise politics because that's how the music industry (especially in USA) work nowadays. Some bands take that risk, though.

In terms of songwriting, Load and ReLoad are nowhere near close to Death Magnetic, most of the songs from both albums feel uninspired.

@BlackenedThunder I really have to differ. Death Magnetic riffs are (again, my opinion) bland, and far too pieced together. It just sounds like a bunch of mediocre musical ideas put together.

Load however, was lyrically, the best metallica album, period. Musically it was pretty good too. ReLoad IMO was good too.
