I'm originally from Michigan but now live in Louisiana. My family living up north love fried turkey but now I use an oil-less fryer much better and safer.
separate the fuel source, i.e. propane, then either cover it with lid to snuff out flames or get the proper fire extinguisher that isn't water based. And if all else fails, try baking soda, works great for indoor cooking fires.
Hey noobie, dont try to extinguish an oil fire with a water extinguisher, it will just repand it. take an ABC or a K powder extinguisher. Or take baking soda. This is good for everyone at home or working in a restaurant
@skittlepower95 Doesn't the skin make a "seal" that keeps the turkey moist, hence the reason for frying? It's not like it's drenched in oil. The only part that should be oily is the skin and the surface. The meat isn't oily whatsoever.
at least you can laugh now. but seriously, every year many families loose their homes during the holiday season to careless mistakes like this. you gotta be more careful.
As soon as the fire started they should have called 911... When these fires happen they can get out of control very fast. So it is very important to get the fire dept there asap.
I was wondering who was in the running for the STUPIDEST a-holes in America...then low and behold......THERE THEY ARE.....!!!!!!! These idiots probably still ate the turkey when the fire went out....Absolutely brain dead.....
You should never direct an extinguisher down into a tank of burning oil. It is like trying to fill a drinking glass with a pressure washer. Only a wet agent (not water) extinguisher should be used on burning vegetable oils. These are very expensive and only found in restaurants, not homes. A metal garbage can lid with a broom handle is the safest bet for a home owner with this type fire. Telling anyone to use any extinguisher on a deep fryer is bad advice, fire science instructor or not.
That is exactly what an Oklahoma City Fire Department fireman did one summer at the State Fair of Oklahoma. A live shot was set up for an interview with the fair director when in the background a small fire broke out in a corn dog booth. While live on air an OCFD fireman picked up an extinguisher without first assessing the type of fire, grease. He hit it with a CO2 nozzle whereby the whole booth was soon fully engulfed in a total and complete blaze. Then he hit it with water and it flashed.
no not for grease fires. i am an insurance inspector and i inspect commercial kitchens all the time. if you want to be safe use a K for grease fires :-)
I am a fire science instructor, residential fire extinguishers should be ABC, so the can handle 99% of home fire. k works best and can mandated for COMMERCIAL kitchens but not residential. I guarantee I have personally put more grease fires out with ABC than you have you have with all method combined. Many people come hear looking for advice.( not that they should, but they do anyway)As professionals when we post comments we should give accurate and practical info.ABC work great on grease fires
1. We never put the turkey in! The fire started while the oil was heating up. We had a couple of other turkeys being prepared in the traditional manner, so no one went hungry.
2. Both Fredengle and cockobean are right re: fireball source. The fire took off because the extinguisher jet hitting the oil roiled the surface and accelerated the combustion. We put the fire out shortly afterward by dumping in two large boxes of baking soda.
@jbroussardva You never just put the lid on??? Of all they ways to put it out you had to waste a fire extinguisher and them waste two large boxes of baking soda?
@jbroussardva and you also fired the fire extinguisher directly into the vat instead of over like you're supposed to and you guys didn't turn off the gas so when it spilled out it wouldn't light on fire.
Yes, one can use a variety of extinguishers on flaming oils, ...but these are fucking reeeeeeeeetards who burn a fire under their overhanging asphalt tile roof.
I think it's you that needs more schooling. Most extinguishers out there are dry chemical or foam, which you DO use with grease fires. Very seldom are pure water extinguishers made anymore.
The most effective method would be to have a heavy wool blanket soaking nearby. 2-people can spread it out and gently place it over top of the flames to smother them.
Unbelievably stupid.
