Teresa Stratas nails this song like no other. This version is too fast to pull the charm and humor out of every phrase. "Statas Sings Weill" disk is where to fall in love with this song.
@elizabethvonslussen She *IS* deniably good at it because I and any other jazz musician would deny it!! It's like Ussain Bolt having a go at the steeplechase. I'm sure he wouldn't be useless but...!!
does anyone know where i can get the orchestral score for this? i'm singing it in a couple of weeks and having a minor panic attack at not being able to source it anywhere! i'm in england so any help would be fab!
@elizabethvonslussen Found this again a year on! I do get why people think she does this well - it's in tune & she's charming , but this simply ain't cabaret singing! This is a classical audience's *idea* of cabaret singing! Her phrasing is lamentable, it's all terribly tripleted (as is the orchestral playing) which creates a formulaic & wooden feel quite at odds with the loucheness (& looseness) of the genre.
@Youkali67 For *your* information it absolutely *is* cabaret - as in the classic archetypal Berlin scene of the 30's. I'm not sure you understand the term or the flexibility of the boundaries! Weill may have a few different labels attached to him but 'classical composer' is stretching it. He wrote 'Mack the Knife' for goodness sake - the most standard of all jazz standards. Yes it was part of the score for the Threepenny opera, but that was not a classical score, more akin to a musical.
@harrythepiano He also wrote a violin concerto, 2 symphonies, 2 string quartets, a cello sonata, and other orchestral works. He certainly regarded himself as a classical composer! Anne Sofie's interpretation of this song is perfectly valid (indeed it is very fine) and I am sure Weill would have been very happy with it!
@elizabethvonslussen Plus unfortunately much of the melody is around B above mid C right on her break. She's trying so hard *not* to make it operatic but her alternative is rather nasal head voice in that register. Don't get me wrong, I really think she's a wonderful singer & she does this better than other classicals I've heard, but it's still wrong - like Monk playing Chopin or something! Check out youtube.com/watch?v=I_sC2iCKef4 half the vocal ability, twice the performance!
Che classe e che stile! Grandissima cantante lirica, che canta con una competenza e una bravura straordinarie anche quando si cimenta in un repertorio jazz o da musical di Broadway.
One of my favorite mezzos ever. Love her voice - the warmth, the elegance, the intelligence that comes through. If you haven't heard her Christmas album, it's fabulous!
She is a wonderful singer. But not the best in any genre she sings elizabeth. This is just her arsing about. I don't think she would contest for a minute that Sarah Vaughan or Ella or a million others wouoldn't be out of her league in cabaret and jazz genres. Doesn't mean she's not great at her thing.
elizabeth. Great! You could not get two more down to earth singers than Bryn and Anne Sofie. It must have been a great experience for you. Did you get to meet them afterwards?

she tries to be edgy but fails to be so. her singing is neither fully pop or Classical. She not only fails at being both.. worst of all she fails at being either..
No style (and no language) trips this woman up. Is there anything she can't sing?

@harrythepiano For your information, this is not cabaret it's musical. And opera singers also sing in musicals and Weill is a classical composer.

I love her acting and of course her voice, although I prefer her "opera" voice. Thanks for posting

I really love her voice, but I think this song sounds better if it's not that slurred, less legato. Just my opinion though.
