  • This woman is a relic from a time when Hollywood was truly magic.

  • Poor Mary. At one time her world wide popularity equalled that of food. The public, then the industry soon forgot her once the talkies got into fool swing and WW2 reset people's memories. The public are totally unaware of this giant, and foundation of the industry, of her mastery of the craft, the amazing life she lived, that she is the legend of legends of movies. Her battles, loves, losses and incredible legacy, lost and replaced with cheap thrills, cgi and immediate gratification. Mary/Gladys

  • seriously, I cried while watching it.

  • I believe Pickfair was torn down, which is sad. However, I don't know if it would have worked as a museum. Pickford's films, we hope, will find their way on DVD so that new generations will know why she was so popular.

  • @tousamis

You're disgustingly shallow to be insulting her HOUSE.

I doubt you have a multi-million dollar worth mansion in California.

  • She will always be Toronto's "Best Girl"!

  • @Wiesshund Judging from the tour of that mansion, it looks like she was really hurting.

  • Mary was the first star to put her hands and footprints at Grauman's Chinese theatre in hollywood

  • She looks great in all of her pictures

  • She is so pretty

  • the house was quite ugly inside, and more like a museum than a home.

  • Gene Kelly ROCKS!!!

  • "I shall treasure it always". God I love her.

  • She's so cute! :)

  • How could they even think of destroying her legendary home? I was so sad when I read it here after watching the video!

  • "Secrets" filmed in 1933 was her last movie. You can find clips of it here on youtube.

  • What a beautiful lady. She still used the same mannerisms that made her a darling of the silent film era. Pia Zadora was classless and should never been allowed to purchase Pickfair. Its sickening that LosAngles residents would go after money instead of making this the treaured landmark that it should have been. Shoot a year or two ago I saw on the news that they sold the Hollywood sign to another country! Soon the USA won't belong to us at all, :"(

  • Buddy Rogers SHOULD have been called to the podium to say a few words at least. It would have only been fitting. Oh well. The academy screws up a lot.

  • It was very moving to see tears in her eyes as she accepted her Oscar! She knew in the end that she had not been forgotten. Lovely woman.

  • That was great!

  • We don't have to face old age if we die young. That's the only choice we have. It has always amazed me that we will let our loved ones endure the pain of disease and lingering death but will uthanize our beloved pets to keep them from suffering. Seems cruel to me. We can't end suffering, but we watch it...interesting.

  • A Monumental Star, fundamental to the Industry, a great Star, a fine Actress, an astute business woman.

  • @ToughXArmy69

    I couldn't agree more.

  • She always had such expressive eyes. Los Angeles should have declared "Pickford" a national treasure... that is sad that house and all it represented was torn down.

  • @tgallemore I can't remember it's name, but there is a house in the UK built by the man who introduced sliced bread to England. He was a visitor to Pickfair and his own home was HEAVILY influenced by it. Although it doesn't make up for the original being destroyed, I think you would find it fasinating. I will try to find it's details and post them here.

  • BBC 4 did a documentary on it Art Deco Icons Casa Del Rio, it's worth hunting it down.

I suppose it's a bit like visiting the RMS Olympics Dining Room (now on another boat) to get a feel of the titanic. :)

  • A very classy lady and a true Hollywood starlet.

    Rest Peacefully

    MARY PICKFORD (1892-1979)

  • @DutchKalhoun

    Star-LET?

  • Awe <3 Glad to see Mary got an Honorary Oscar... She truly deserved it. ♥

  • And what is making me more happy is that Mary Pickford the first America's Sweetheart was proudly Canadian as well as Marie Dressler & Norma Shearer, yes I remember this program when I was 18 years old, now regarding Pia Zadora she was just a small movie star but Mary Pickford was not just a big movie star but also a great actress and now a legend, poor Pia she had to destroy somethig in order for her to be in the news, by the way where is Pia now? oh well who cares!!!

  • 0:54 Could someone tell me which film this is?

  • Though it is a great gesture, sort of sad to see her this way. Guess we all have to face the reality of old age....

  • she's so sweet

  • i remember watching this as a teenager,i will never forgive pia zadora for tearing down pickfair

  • Pickford is a pioneer of the movies. Because of her and the others who set up United Artists, she paved the way for every future star to take a little control over their career as best they could. She is a great example of what a 'movie star' is. An exceptional talent!!!

  • She was amazing, and along with Douglas Fairbanks her husband, D.W. Griffith and Charlie Chaplin they started United Artists, they started it so that Actors and Actresses could reap some of the rewards of their hard work and not the Studio Owners and Distributors.

  • The Queen of silent Hollywood. The Beverly Hills house 'Pickfair' was originally built as an English-style hunting lodge. Mary Pickford and her husband Douglas Fairbanks had it completely rebuilt into a French Regency style mansion by famed California architect Wallace Neff. The house was torn-down several years ago.

  • Just look at her eyes - full of tears - love mary xx

  • Preciosa Mary!!!!!! Coqueta se la veía!!! Muy merecido reconocimiento a una verdadera estrella!!

  • DIDNT SAMMY DAVIS JR OWN THIS HOUSE ?

  • Adorable.......

  • Mary Pickford is Hollywood at its best.

I wish more were like her.

She is a shining example of greatness.

Thank you for posting this video.

It is now among my favorites.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • Trivia: She was good/rivals with Charlie Chaplin, and had a famous affair with Douglass Fairbanks.

  • @PapagenoJuan2 , I thought douglas fairbanks was her first husband. If not her first , but she was married to him.

  • @markserjeant yes that's right

  • @PapagenoJuan2 She actually married Douglas Fairbanks. He was her 2nd husband (1920-1936) and Buddy Rogers was her 3rd (1936- 1979, her death). Yes, she and Douglas were an item before her divorce from Owen Moore, but she and Moore were already separated.

  • wonderful video mary was a real major movie star iit maked me cry

  • Yes, it should have been designated as a historical landmark. Royalty, legends all visited there. It was a must in those days. SAD. Too late now.

  • I remember, I was only seven when my father brought home an old magazine. In this magazine I saw for the first time a picture of Mary Pickford. She was smiling and holding her Oscar. She looked very fragile. I was mesmerized by a picture when she was very young, she looked so innocent and also fragile. However, what a strong petite woman. I cut the picture and put in on my wall. I was only seven...

  • Was that really the staircase? I was expecting something far grander at Mary's pad!

  • Charles Rogers seemed never to age - people forget about him - bless you Charles!

  • America's Sweetheart RIP

  • It is hard to imagine today what Mary Pickford meant to the audiences at the peak of her career. It was the very first movie star admired all over the world! Although her phenomenon was not only a sociological one. She was a very talented woman in many senses but first of all a great artist of a new medium. As someone has said, it is sad that many of the people involved in this tribute ignored many of these facts.

  • This was very enjoyable to see! But, I kept wanting to tell her to take the Oscar from the man's hands. I can't help but wonder why she wouldn't hold the Oscar...I mean, you could tell the man was waiting for her to take it, but she didn't. So, he just had to hold it the whole time...odd.

I don't mean any disrespect, but it is odd i think...

  • @storybellz

This video is from 1976, Mary was 84 with failing health, she died in 1979 of a fatal stroke.

I believe she had one or more previous strokes prior to her death.

Her latter years are sad actualy, she was a nice lady and used her stature and influence to help lots of people.

It's sad none of those people could have helped her when she was in need.

  • @Wiesshund

    You're so right.

  • @storybellz I've heard the OSCAR statue is heavy. Is it so? Then maybe that explains why she did not hold it?

  • VERY TOUCHING ! I REMEMBER SEEING THIS LIVE ALL THOSE YEARS AGO, AND IT CONTINUES TO TOUCH ME. SHE WAS 84 YEARS OLD, A STAR OF THE FIRST MAGNITUDE ! A ONE OF A KIND, TRULY, AMERICA'S "SWEETHEART."

  • One of the twenty finest actresses to ever grace the silver screen.

  • Whatever happened to Baby Mary??

  • When is her story going to be brought to the big screen.

  • She was a great actress , and business women. With magnificent banana curls in her hair. RIP. Gouveia

  • muy bonito, me encanta este vídeo, es entrañable

  • It makes me tremble and teary eyed!!!!

  • It makes me tremble and teary eyed!!!!!!!!

  • Mary was born a Canadian and went out of her way to get her citizenship returned before she passed away. Mary Pickford died a Canadian, and a Citizen of the World.

  • awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww bless her so sweet

  • bravo bcoz its well deserved prize 4 mrs pickford...thks u 4 the wonderful cinema days in the 10s-20s xD u always b my only pioneer 4 woman in hollywood haha xD

  • Was Buddy Rogers a homosexual?

    Discuss.

  • @mrspatrickcampbell - NO! He was passionately in love with Mary ever since their film together in 1927 entitled "My Best Girl". Even though at the time she was married to Douglas Fairbanks, he remained devoted to her. She divorced Fairbanks in 1936 and she and Buddy were married shortly afterwards. They went on to adopt two children.

  • what the hell is wrong with Mary Pigford, she looks like a hot piping mess...She more than likely is drunk...GROSS!

  • @mcqueen1234566

Don't be rude She's old and sick, someday we're all gonna be

that way but not all of us that famous!!!!!!

  • @mcqueen12345667

The only thing that IS gross is your ignorant remark.

  • @mcqueen12345667 - I'd like to see what you're like at 84. Mary couldn't stand drunkenness. She divorced her first husband Owen Moore because he drank. Mary Pickford made invaluable contributions to the motion picture industry and was more creative in her lifetime than most people ever could be in ten lifetimes. Your comment is extremely inappropriate and insensitive.

  • @Coupal1 That might be one of the reasons why she never got along with Olive Thomas. I hate that she died so very young. This could have been her too if she lived as long as Mary.

  • @Coupal1 That might be one of the reasons why she never got along with Olive Thomas. I hate that she died so very young. This could have been her too if she lived as long as Mary.

  • Oh dear - at least spell Charles Buddy Rogers name correctly at the end, not "Rodgers"

  • @myrnaloysboy That was as sad as Mary being so ill and possibly not knowing where she was or what all the fuss was about. By misspelling the name of Buddy Rogers, it showed that even the staff of the Oscar show had forgotten him, or more probably, had never heard of him. And possibly Mary, also. And so except for those who were aware of the importance of Mary and her great career, it was an empty gesture.

  • @defundthewar Indeed, although she seems a lucid, although Walter does feed her the lines.

  • @montmorg67

Well, I'm a 29 year old male and it seems that we share something. :)

  • She was still very beautiful even at 82!

  • wow what a great moment for a great lady! shes till lovely

  • shame on you Pia for destroying a Hollywood landmark. You were nothing and yet destroyed the home of someone who contributed to the foundation of the great Hollywood. Mrs Pickford was a pioneer ! I will never forget her.

  • @caribbeantigress78 agree, these people come in and destroy Hollywood heritage treasures and no one stops them

  • @caribbeantigress78 What did she do?

  • @caribbeantigress78 how awful.. do you mean Pia Zadora? They have no idea of history there...they pulled down the magical Hollywood Hotel too...ah well...as they say...this too shall pass. Nothing is forever. x

  • i'm 22 and saw a beautiful silent film with her last night (pollyanna) she was incredible. you will never be forgotten.

  • she is my hero!

  • I'm so proud shes from Canada

  • She looks great for her age just like Lillian Gish. Shame on Pia Zadora, how could she do that!

  • @klaviklack And Pia's life has gone down hill ever since she bulldozed that home.

  • HENRIQUE MEDINA ( 3M30S) IS A PAINTER PORTUGUESE. NOT SPANISH!

  • the painter,MEDINA,was a portuguese painter and not spanish!

  • this woman is very, very, very scay looking.if I saw her in my window I wouldfreak out...especially with that cheap wig...i would die.

  • @mcqueen12345667 - You fail at trolling.

  • @mcqueen12345667

What an ignorant and disrespectful comment.

  • @mcqueen12345667 she's old, a little tired and in her eighties...you will feel the same soon, then you'll get your answer

  • @Dirkdebruyne If mcqueen12345667 is blessed to even reach that age. Shame on them for even thinking such a thing about an elderly person.

  • Is it me or does Charles Buddy Rogers look like Danny La Rue?

  • This is timeless. What a woman! What a career!

  • Mary Pickford was an amazing woman, and that is an understatement. She was a superb actress,a wonderful director, and a savvy business woman. She set goals and she made those goals. She blazed trails no other woman had then,it was in the early 1900's a time when most women were not taken very seriously, but she was.She dealt with and overcame a lot of tragedy in her life as well. And there are no rude ,immature remarks could ever diminish that!Thank You Mary Pickford for all you did!

  • Would it be at all possible to see another silent movie legend receive her honorary Oscar; Lillian Gish? That would be amazing.

  • @thanth11 i m sure oscars will load in their channel later on haha...gish n pickford 2 me the greatest women icon of all time in silent era PERIOD XD

  • Why do we have to grow old?

  • These people invented Cinema acting - all the Hollywood stars of today owe these people everything!

  • @myrnaloysboy hmm u must be a myrna loy fan too?

  • @arlichar11 She's my girl!

  • Doug taught her housekeeping, after the divorce, she kept that house!!!

  • Lovely, but it would have been nice if they had given Gloria Swanson a gong too.

  • @myrnaloysboy

    Agreed.

  • @myrnaloysboy I agree. Swanson definitely deserved an honorary Oscar. She was an exceptional film star and represents the silent era amazingly.

  • Mary Pickford! What an honor! For all times.

  • So many important actors recieved Oscars throughout time. The 70's was when many actors died, including Joan Crawford.

  • @YoungandRestlessboy Joan of Crawford was the greatest of them all.

  • There have been many great Oscar winners, but in the end, it always comes down to Mary, who will always be "America's Sweetheart."

    God bless!

  • hammered!

  • thank you for that !!! thank u ALOT

  • drunk as a skunk

  • @shealways : And you are dumb as scum.

  • ACADEMY MEMBERS: moments like this are whattheacademy awards telecast are all about, PLEASE CONSIDER RETURNING THE HONORARY AWARDS TO OSCAR NIGHT!!!!

  • Regretfully, Pickfair was demolished to make way for a mega-mega mansion for some celeb (I seemed to recall he was some Wall Street financier whose name escapes me at this moment).

  • @chuckbuckbobuck

Pia Zadora lives on the land where Pickfair once stood.

And when was the last time she did ANYTHING of note.

  • That's so cool. glad I saw this.

    Wasn't Pickfair demolished?

  • look her up on wikipedia. she was a beyotch to her kids

  • she was hammered!

  • Mary lived to a ripe old age. Thumbs up to this video!

  • interesting seein here after all these years. thumbs up for the vid!

  • she lived to a ripe old age.Thumbs up!

  • she lived to a ripe old age.Thumbs up!

  • Are they giving the Oscar to Pickford or to her interior designer?

  • O my ! She had tears in her eyes ! This is so moving! I've never seen that before! This was a great lady.

  • Thankyou! I was a toddler but I remember watching this on tv.When I was little most of us watched what our parents watched.

  • @TaraMoriah Good to know you were a toddler whan you wtached this. Kudos!

  • Thank you! I remember vividly watching this when it was first broadcast!

  • Mary Pickford is so wonderful so sweet it made me tear up;/xxMary pickford may you rest in peace

  • and how wonderful that she survived the massacre of silent screen stars with the advent of Talkies and won a competitive Oscar before she retired.

  • Mary Pickford, you were truly an astoundingly amazing person.I wish that I could have met you myself. What a wonderful contribution and foundation you made for the motion picture industry. And what an inspiration you are to so many people. You will not be forgotten!

  • What a wonderful lady.

  • my last name is pickford

  • mary pickford actually had a life filled with many tragedies. the end of the silent era was the biggest one. her life was unfortunately far from happy. yet her legacy lives on to this day!

  • Is it just me or does she seem very "out of it" when they give her the oscar?

  • Well, she did battle alcloholism in the intervening years following her retirement. That and coupled with the fact that she was 84 and perhaps overwhelmed contributed to her demeanor.

  • Very moving and well deserved. She was the first true movie star and her legacy should never be forgotten.

  • What an amazing and poised woman...even at her age.

It is terrible that actress Pia Zadora bought and demolished Ms.Pickford's home "Pickfair" in 1989. It should have been designated a historical property by Los Angeles County.

  • @broguy i know. what a shame! pia zadora! los angeles should buy it and make it as a historical landmark instead! or made it into a museum or something!

  • she was so beautiful even at that age !!!

  • Amazing. I love you, Mary!!!

  • THIS VIDEO WAS PRE-TAPED AND THEM TALECAST AT THE ACADEMY AWARDS ON THAT YEAR. I tHINK MARY WAS WONDERFUL,AN ACADEMY FOUNDER,ACTRESS AND PHILANTROPHIST,SHE BUILD THE MOTION PICTURE COUNTRY HOUSE AND HOSPITAL, THAT´S WHY SHE LIVED IN A PALACE, YES SHE FOR GOOD ,HELPED THEM ALL, AN ASTUTE BUSINESS WOMAN BECAME AS FAMOUS AS MILLIONAIRE INDEED. THE LEGAL BATTLE ABOUT HER OSCARS BEING SOLD IN AUCTION LAST YEAR I THINK BUDDY ROGERS COULD HAVE PROTECTED HER LEGACY MORE.VIVA MARY PICKFORD

  • That's odd that he was there and she was at home. I guess she was too frail by that point to make the presentation.

  • She's no Baby Jane, she's Baby Gladys ;) That's great they finally put it up on YouTube. Mary totally deserved it - she was a talented natural actress, energetic, upbeat and beautiful; a business woman, and the first international movie star

  • Thank you so much for putting it up!

I hate when people go all 'oh she was Baby Jane'...I think she was extremely touched, you can see tears in her eyes towards the end.

Why did they cut out the film clips? Copyrights?

  • i love gene kelly

  • she has a beautiful home and she totally deserves this award.

  • She once tought in burn all her movies. But well, cinema is glad that she hadn't did that. A rare combination of talent and beauty.

  • Talent, beauty and class... from what I heard, it was Lillian Gish convinced her not to burn her movies... and that's a real good thing. =)

  • @BSNFabricating why did she ever think to do such a thing? burn all the masterpieces of cinema that have such important history!

  • AWW :)

  • What a moment!

  • incredible video with a historical feeling

  • What a great tribute to the greatest lady of all time..

  • i have never seen this before she's a legend.

  • She represents so much, that seems to be lost forever. You will never be forgotten, Ms. Pickford.

  • I loved the way they showed Pickfair and presented Ms. Pickford. to us.

Now, where's the honorary Oscar to Dame Elizabeth Taylor?! It's time to honor the last of the greats.

  • @marcosvalenca You are so right. Taylor should definitely have gotten an Oscar. She defines Hollywood. Too late now though. :\

  • It was cool seeing Pickfair. I had heard of it.

  • Wow, that must have made quite an impression back then considering that Mary had lived more or less like a recluse for decades (only allowing a few select - like Douglas Fairbanks Jr and of course her husband Buddy - around her). A bit amateurish of the producers to misspell Buddy's last name at the end :P

  • Get Honorary Oscar Award after 46 years the Oscar for Best actress is a great emotion. Thanks for this rarity! Excellent introdution!!

  • wow, that was amazing to see her. and she soo rich!

  • Qué tesoro!!! se te pone la piel chinita mano!!!, ni modo, soy un fanático del cine clásico muy llorón que me emociono fácilmente con clips como este!!!

  • America's Sweetheart...from CANADA!!!!! I love it :)

  • You can really tell how meaningful that honorary Oscar was to Mary so late in her life.
