The cake isn't 'officially' a block so this works. If you use a half step, the half step IS a block so it reduces the height of the fence to 1 block, giving the conveyor no effect :)

@thegodofallgamers half slabs are not blocks, this doesn't work with slabs because they are 0,5 blocks high. So the fence underneath it does not stick out, because it ends at the same point as the slab. you can see slabs are not blocks because redstone wire can pass through it, but redstone power can't. And because grass can grow underneath it.
