  • This is called a "ring shout". It was a survival of indigenous African dance. White ministers in the South often placed a ban on it. The men and women arranged themselves in a ring. The music started, perhaps with a Spiritual, and the ring began to move, at first slowly, then with quickening pace. The same musical phrase was repeated over and over for hours. This produced an ecstatic state. Women screamed and fell. Men, exhausted, dropped out of the ring

  • church today ~ its cut short ~ but its enough to play again & again...blessed be

  • Yes,truly a beautiful scene. This movie haunts me still. I think that so many of Oprah's "supporters" couldn't love what they didn't understand. Parts they did understand caused them guilt. That wasn't the point of the film. This was a great film, totally forgotten on purpose.

  • Love and miss you Ms. Richards.

  • Love and miss you terrible Ms. Richards!

  • Great movie,to bad we didn't go out and support it..What a shame...

  • My favourite part of the novel... wonderful scene in the movie as well...

  • Go to Randall Robinson's book, "The Debt". I can't recall the the exact page but it explains how most of us percieved this movie to be a comedy. This and other poignant scenes struck so deep into my soul that I wonder how Ms. Winfrey (along with the director) got the actors to protray them......Really soul bearing they are....

  • love this scene-could you please, please load the rest of this scene 'love your heart' .

  • see it took a strong black woman 2 bring them together 2 b able to praise God...this is such a powerful scene its something that moves the heart to see the children laugh the men dance the women cry 4 the living the dead n all of it fell back into praising God n i wish we would be able to do this this together just like that but u got to b willing in heart n spirit

  • AMAZING!!!

  • I cried during all of the scenes with Baby Suggs. Beah Richards brought something so divine to this role. That sweet little laugh she had, the look of pride in her face...people always go on about how books are better than films, but I never agree. Not when there is such a presence given to a character by such an amazing portrayal.

  • I agree...to me..Baby Suggs is my favorite character. Her love is amazing!!

  • great clip, very moving

    5*****

    love is all trevor sizzle

  • This scene is so beautiful.

  • I love this scene, it made me cry the first time.

I wish I could get the music of this scene, whatever it's called.

  • God spoke to my heart during this scene the first time I saw it and yes I cried to.

  • I love this scene of this movie!!!

  • omg. I was thinking this whole time I was the only one who uploaded a clip from this (last year deleted and just reuploaded another). Just typed in 'Beloved Baby Suggs" and this came up. Relief to know someone else has taste. lol

I have to rip the final one "love your heart". best.

  • u kno what allofus african american should pull off like dont tell anybody just do it like all men all of us get ous self some tickets and i mean all 35 million black folks in amerika plus all black folks in the rest of north and south america we should all just leave and by ourselves the western sahara territory or some over peace of africa and live their that be sooo awesome worshippin god alone and just say good bye uncle tom that would be the funniest stuff ever id crack up but id do it haha

  • that would be nice but black people have put in alot of work into this country. we might have to struggle but we deserve to reap the benefits of being an American. too many blacks have shed blood in this country for us (blacks) to just walk away and move somewhere else. and Africa is a different environment than America. will African Americans be able to adjust in Africa just because we're black? i dont think so

  • oooh man i do think it be cool but i was way high when i wrote this ...but yeah because of beein black would be a retarded reson to move to africa!

  • @trinidad718

I don't know who you were replying to, but let me say this:

The term "African-American" means *AMERICAN*!!! There's no moving to anyplace else. Take the American dream and throttle it into the ground. Do everything with it that can be done and then come laugh in my lily-white face!

I'll be waiting, and I'll be smiling when you come. I'll be an American, too, and I'll be happy. We'll salute the flag together.

Damn, this a creepy, sad movie!

  • im not sure if ur responding to me or Romarinho89. Im all in favor of African Americans staying in America and saluting the flag with fellow Americans.

  • What a wunderful actress. Love her.

  • Thats Old time Religion

  • I love this scene, Baby Suggs was one of the greatest characters I have ever read about!

  • LONG LIVE BEAH RICHARDS!!!

  • I Think this movie was one of the best ever. Great Post. Can you add the part where she says "love your heart, that is the prize" and let me know. Thank You

  • Great post! Thanks. Excellent acting and oscar worthy performance by the actress playing baby suggs

  • Baby Suggs was always my favorite character of Beloved. Thank you for putting this scene in.
