i like the difference (between 1989 and today) inside the cockpit. they had a gearstick, now they have paddles. and in 1989 they had (i guess) 3 buttons, nowadays they have about 20! O_o
I agree. Was linked with Ferrari I think when Mansell said he was going to retire. Think he would have been near the top of the list to replace Prost. No disrespect to Capelli, but Nannini would have done a better job, I know the 92 car was like the worst Ferrari ever built, but Alesi still managed to get 7 points finishes out of it.
I think the 1980 Ferrari 312T5 was probably the worst. It was nowhere near competitive and Ferrari ended the season in 10'th place with just 8 points. Poor Jody Scheckter who was champion in 1979 ended the 1980 season in 19'th with just 2 points. A couple of 5'th places was the best that car managed.
At leas the F92 managed two podium finishes (two 3'rd places with Alesi) in 1992.
@SpencerWhiteSTFC1 Taking a hand off the wheel isnt a big deal unless its in a corner...but what impresses me is how smooth and fast their shifts are.
No, no. No sarcasm. The Nannini lap we see is a composit of different laps and it seems almost seamless. It was edited well. Look at 58 sec mark. Watch the car in front. then look at 1.23 mark and watch the car in front. You will see what I mean.
Before Williams released their new car mid-season the Benetton was the better car. Both Senna and Hill said it and it was obvious. You just have to look at the time difference between Senna and Hill laptimes to see that it was Senna's skills and talent that made up for it. With the newer car later in the season Hill was much more competitive, so imagine what Senna could've done with that car. The battle between Schumacher and Hill would've been for 2nd place...
Agreed. Senna was very close to Schuemacher and could have even won in IMOLA if not for the accident, Senna in the FW16B would have been a different story than what Hill was doing, the talent level between Hill and Senna was miles.
I agree. The beneton was a better car than the Williams for most of the year I believe. Senna was pushing very very hard in Brazil and finally made an error. This wouldnt have happened if he had a better car.
And how did Schumacher wrap up that 94 world title ?? would have been Damon Hills if not for Schumachers dirty driving taking Damon out after slamming into the wall.
No question this guy would have been a multiple world champ if not for the severed hand but more over would have still been racing after Prost,Mansells,Patrese's retirement and Sennas death and would have been around to stop Schumacher winning several world championships by default.
Just shows what a smooth driver Nannini was, shame he had that helicopter crash in 1990 which severed the lower part of his right arm off, could've gone on to acheive great things in F1.
The Judd CV made about 610 hp in 1989 and the Judd EV about 625 hp the same year.
I have never seen any HP figures for the Ford V8 that Benetton ran in 1989, but it must have been a bit more than a Ford DFR which was at or around 595 hp.

Nannini was a good driver, shame about the helicopter crash as he still had many years left in F1 in my opinion.

Great to see the drivers taking their hands off the wheel to change gear.
For me this made the drivers of that era more skilful. Real driving.

damiannerd 2 years ago 2

You do have to wonder what he could have accomplished if not for that injury...his comeback in touring cars was miraculous in itself.

Nope! Definitely not in 1989! No way!
The 3.5 L was ofcourse developed futher and in their final year 1994 they had about 750 BHP.
Michaelingolfhansen 3 years ago
in 1994 the Renault engine had 790 BHP
theultimateforce 3 years ago
Rumours said they had one of the most powerfull ones, so close to 800 sounds right.
Michaelingolfhansen 3 years ago
Many didnt exceed 600 BHP in 1989, but I cant deny Ferrari had more...
Michaelingolfhansen 3 years ago
The Ferrari, Renault, and Honda engines all produced in excess of 600 HP.
The Ford and Judds made close to 600 but didn't exceed it.

Amazing stuff!
However most of these 3.5L engines of 89"only" had 550-580 bhp.
And people now complain that F1 engines are to weak. (750-800 bhp of the 2.4L)

Benetton Ford B189. Beautiful car, and a man who would have been a great of F1 in the 90's had he not lost his hand in a helicopter crash.
