behind this music and its orchestration, their is one man: Charles Stepney. He wrote the music and arranged it. He worked with many other great artists, though his name has been forgotten. If you like this music, try to listen to the "ROTARY CONNECTION" music, which has the same spirit. For example, listen to "this town", written by Stevie Wonder and arranged by Stepney. Pure marvel.
in 2005, i found this cd at Walgreen's for $3.20. so good i bought several & gave them as presents to a few people who'd appreciate it...i was not shocked at all when those very same people had never heard it (over 50 years old) & thought it was tremendously under-appreciated.
I love Minnie Riperton's songs. She was and in my heart, an angel from heaven. I wish she was still alive to grace us with more of her amazing music. I bet we all would have been amazed. I'm fifteen and prefer songs and music from back then instead of music of today.
It's another version of this YouTube without lyrics and she's just singing operatic notes in background when she was performing with Rotary Connection.
u will alway's be in my heart minnie. i was 15 when i first heard u, and fell in love with ur style & voice. and i became ur no.1 fan. & i am so proud to be ur no 1. fan now & 4-ever. u r truly god's & my perfect angel. r.i.p. beautiful lady. i miss u & i hope u know that u r 4-ever. ur no.1 fan
This is my favorite song in the world. It reminds me of a saturday morning where the beautiful sun is shining in your face to wake you up. It is also the weirdest song I've ever heard. Though when you hear what Minnie is suggesting you really want to do it. I really wanted to "slip under the crack beneath my door and step over the line where sky meets shore". I love finding beauty in the most innocent of things.
this isn't music this is paradise music...please please somebody out there tell me where i can find this song,is the album available.got to get this song!
the original album is kinda hard to get, but there have been reissues, and i'm sure minnies stuff should be easily available on cd, but that's not really my medium, lol...
@1960timbo available @ Amazon. My absolute favorite song by Minnie. Was a student and too broke to buy it when it first came out. I searched for it for 25 years. Found it in 1985 as an expensive import at Tower in Stonestown SF. Bought it. Still remember how it felt to find this song. BTW, the CD is 'Come To My Garden' and there are other goodies on there as well, like 'Only When I'm Dreaming'.
@TheSocratease Same with me.....I paid $30 for the LP at Record Finders in LA in 1980. Way more than I had ever paid for a record. So right about "Only When I'm Dreaming"...."mist in purple trees/nothing seems to rhyme" what imagery they conjured to match the awesome musicality and the grandeur of Minnie's voice
@orionsecret Yep. That's what I paid for the CD. You must have gotten the copy at Record Finders just before me. LOL. I used to go around with a wish list and hit the record stores whenever I was visiting a different city. I've always fantasized about Ron Carter playing "Only When I'm Dreaming". You know that game you play where you imagine certain jazz men playing certain songs? :-))
This song has an awesome Brazilian smooth jazz sound. I just can't believe how many critics in the music industry think of Minnie as a one-hit wonder with "Loving You". This amazing woman's body of work and voice is as diverse, if not more so, and eclectic as any of the greatest legends.
The most outstanding fact of it all is that Minnie was still very young when she was doing most of these songs. Singers today of comparable age lack her class, elegance and sophistication.
@Dynamo001 Amen. Well said, my friend. Thank God for youtube, so now our music legacy is not forgotten. Her non-popularized songs are newfound treasures for me and many others. Thanks for expressing the opinions of so many of us! God bless.
@MsTracie You're welcome! Thank you for your kind words. Minnie is one of the all-time greats that never seemed to get her due when she was alive to enjoy it.
Not @ all...I must tell u man, this is Minnie's most beautiful album. She recorded it in 3 days...as well as 3 albums that year..."Songs," "Dinner Music" & "Come 2 My Garden" & she still sounds AMAZING.
PLus it was so DIFFERENT... it was like a psychadellic Burt Bacharach type of shit, lol. The synchopation and irregular time signatures, the complex arrangements and harmonies, the etheral singing from Minnie, it's truly a gem.
minnie as amazing. this song is beyond anything i've ever heard. the lyrics, the mood, her voice-everything is just undiscribable. maybe it as an average song back then, but for me it is unique. can anybody tell me if there is anything similar to this song by other artists?
yeah ur right, whenever i listen to rotary connection, minnie sounds sooo different, like she's 2 different persons..with rotary she had a very raw voice, and solo a very sweet, pure voice.. she's amazing..

She did her pwn background vocals with the accompaniment of the Ramsey Lewis Trio.
