I feel sorry for the freaking genius who said you need an oil change "once a year" and the other guy who said "6 months" the shops arnt trying to rip you off by saying 3000 miles. In fact not changing your oil on time is a really fast way to void your warranty and blow up your engine.
My 04 honda crv- caught fire under the engine while driving from oil that was leaking from the fram oil filter gasket. It had to be towed. As a result the main wiring harness was burnt up , the firewalls need replacement, header protector needed removal, and I spent time spraying degreaser for hours to try and clean the mess...I will never ever buy fram products again! Save yourself the service bills and time, I wish I did. Definitely spending the extra dollar for a Wix filter. Screw fram!
How many years has the filter been installed and how many miles? You should be doing an oil change at least once every year. That oil filter looks OLD. Never had a problem with FRAM filters in almost 30 years, with regular maintenance. Neglect will hurt anything.
@jedirifleman The factory filter (UFI) doesn't have a bypass either. I don't have a time machine to go back and interview the engineers who designed the engine. Apparently they were counting on a "tough" filter to resist collapse. The filter in the video was about $18
Fram are synonymous with failure...go for OEM Mann type filters, or K&N But they have had a bad press too...change your filter every 6 months never trust the manufacturer he makes money on your repairs...oil changes prolong engine life!!!
if this has happend before, then why would you put the same filter back on? I'm confused. Unless it was to see if it would happen again,...but I'd spare the ferrari in this case. lol i'd try it on a cheap car.
Wow... it's been on a Ferarri... uh... ok, and to boot, it's been on a VW!! Wow!! Ever wonder why higher end brands like Ferarri, Porsche, BMW recommend using OEM filters because of just this reason?
amsoil sucks i wouldn't use that shit in my lawnmower. you don't know how many snowmobile engines ive lost cause of there oil. i switched to KLOTZ and haven't had any problems since.
They don't call those the orange cans of death for nothing! It's gotta be suicide for an engine to run with something like that. Fram air filters are fine, but oil filters, no NO NO! Purolator, Wix, and STP all the way! Fram stinks!
@redneckrollercoast1 Good question, but there was a long time lag between the first and second teardown. I stopped using the Fram's after the first tear down. At that time the second Fram was already removed from service.
@guidoguitar Dude...you need to start using K & N oil filters on your Ferrari....they're one of the world's best, cost around $10.00 to $15.00 USD, depending on the application....and you need to stop using cheap-ass Fram filters, Ok?....expensive, exotic, high-performance engines have no room for cheap, low quality oil filters, Ok?!....get that through your brain & learn something!....USE COMMON SENSE!!!
Это очередной раз говорит о том что фильтр Fram изготовлен из дерьмовых комплектующих. Как видно из видео, масло довольно чистое, но фильтр не выдержал давления и весь съебурился.
last time i took apart a filter i remember the ends of the paper have a strong piece of metal on each end... fucking sucks to put that on a fucking ferarri
@wheely132 I'm not here to defend the guy, but growing up we would never think of using anything but a Fram. Fram once stood for quality, and they have been riding on that name. They have long ago been sold off from a family owned biz, and here you go, Garbage oil filters. Also this filter is $40.
@vvv1991 Wait, what the hell? That filter he used was 40 bucks? Oh and I know that Fram used to be very good quality.. I wish they were still like that.
@wheely132 Yeah, I'm just saying it's not crazy to think that a fram filter might be a good one. Now if you've looked in to it and STILL buy fram, well then you're an idiot.
@wheely132 NO NO I said IF you learned that fram was garbage and kept using fram you'd be an idiot. I figured you didn't use fram since you were denouncing their products!
Honestly who would use fram after seeing these videos!!!! NO ONE!! You should have heard my father when he saw this crap! He'd been using fram for 50 years!!!
@vvv1991 Oh okay, lol. I am trying to get my dad to stop using fram filters in his 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 with a 454 V8! I really don't want to see it go to shit! At least he uses bosch filters in his trans am.
40PSI max on a VW engine? Are you sure? My brother has had 3 VW engines and each one would be pushing 60-75PSI at highway speeds. My Mitsubishi engines run at that near idle. I feel your choice to run a Fram in a high performance engine to begin with was a bad idea. I would rather run a Wix, Mobil 1, K&N, Pure One, or Amsoil filter. All have superior filter construction and more thorough QC.
So, this FRAM filter that does NOT have a bypass has failed. You said your self that this filter is a quality filter and and is not a cheap piece of crap. I'd love to know exactly what kind of VW you put this crap filter on.
What happened to your bypass valve dude? Classic misapplication by someone who doesnt know better. real Vdub racers use the HP1 Fram racing filter with a bypass valve built in.
@guidoguitar, I'm sorry but I have no knowledge of which Ferrari vehicle you own. However, a quick perusal through the Ferrari parts catalog shows three part numbers which are the most common for all 8-cylinder Ferrari cars since 1980. The part numbers are 100325, 175258 and 191993. These filters are all produced by the Italian filter company UFI and not a single one of these OEM filters is equipped with a by-pass valve. The by-pass is listed as a pressure control valve and is part of the block.
Who uses a fram on a ferrari? Who takes a filter off of a ferrari and reuses it on a VW? Who puts a used filter with no bypass on a VW engine that requires a bypass and then complains when it fails? This guy does.
My advice is to sell the ferrari and buy some new oil filters and shoes. Being cheap sometimes leads to expensive repairs.
@lipadj46 Yesterday I counted ~15 Fram filters on Ferrari engines, and that was just on those cars with the hood up. Those owners need to see my video.
See photos of identical failure after short service here using the link in the description above. Please see also my new video: "UFI Spin On Filter teardown". The UFI did not collapse in similar service.
The reason for the collapse of this element is that this particular filter does NOT have a by-pass valve incorporated. The tab that is displayed and described as the by-pass valve is simply the spring that puts pressure on the center tube to keep it situated within the canister. This filter does not specify a by-pass at all.
This is a textbook case of mis-application and exceeded service life. Next time use a new filter on the VW and buy the proper MANN, MAHLE or HENGST filter for the job.
