This song brings back special memories for me. When my first born son was only months old & he was a little cranky, I'd put on this tune, hold him real close & slowly dance around the living room with him. The swaying to the music always soothed & contented him. This same son is about to make me a grandfather tomorrow. I'll pass on this legacy to him & his first born.
I can't believe some people don't know that it was written to sound like this rather than the Donna Summer version !! How blinkered we are when it comes to music .
Thank you for this song, the heart and the soul is lifted to rise those who lift up the sprits of other on there shoulders to here the voiceXXXXXXXXXX.
Big fan of Vangelis (and Jon to a lesser extent). I also really enjoy the Moodswings version of this song. Added a nice 90's era electronic sound to it. And Chrissi Hynde is lovely as always. A great album overall, even though State of Independance was the only song to get (brief) air time.
this track was written for donna summer, then vangelis decided to record it with jon anderson before he offered it to her. in my humble opinion she should have left it, she could not follow whwt they had done. this track is truly fantastic.
@somnolentable Utter pap. Anybody who knowa JA will realise those lyrics are totally his and it was released well before Donna Summers even got near it. Good on her for making a brilliant version but don't take away from the writer.
Lovely listening to their music whilst relaxing, as it carries one's thoughts to a higher level, or when reading - mainly because it is so inobtrusive.
Many thanks for the upload. This is definitely the best quality upload of this record on YouTube. I am a big fan of the Donna Summer version & the gospel edge she puts on it (and I'm an atheist!), which I think is a very different equal to this (although she can never claim to have wrote such a magnificent piece). I'm sure you will agree that this version is best appreciated on a HQ audio system (as most JA/Yes/Vangelis tracks are), to all you doubters out there.
Didn't know...I looked at the first couple dozen or so comments and found no mention of it, of course there's tons of mentions of Summer's and even one about an Andrea Corr cover. I was just not into reading 237 comments.

@vidfan69 i heard a recent version of this from someone who is ok but brings nothing new..both this and donna had 2 different sounds and equally brilliant. Thanks for this. This album is not available, and this is my favorite track. I've looked for it and been frustrated to find the original. Oh, plenty of remakes, but this one is classic.
Very little music gets so close to the heart. Music you can close your eyes and just feel within. Aslo try a deleted album by Stomu Yamashta - Sea & Sky. Gives the same feeling. ps I'm not a tree hugger (Pink Floyd are my favourites) but love music that has emotion which I find seems to get more diffifult to find as the years pass. The Mummers are the nearest bet at the moment! Go J & V. x
This song is bloody brilliant, I bought the album when it came out. Still love it. Stands the test of time (hadn`t noticed the relentless clapping in the background though before!)
Day by day by day by day (hey, hey) Say-aye yaya oh (yayah yaya oh) be the sound of higher love today (yayah) (hey, hey) Time, time again, it is said We will hear, we will see See it all-in his wisdom-hear His truth will abound the land This truth will abound the land This state of independence shall be This state of independence shall be Time, time again, it is said We will hear, we will see See it all-in his wisdom-hear His truth will abound the land
Shot to the soul-the flame of oroladin The essence of the word The state of independence [interlude] Sounds like a signal from you Bring me to meet your sound And I will bring you to my heart Love like a signal you call Touching my body my soul Bring to me, you to meet me here Home be the temple of your heart Home be the body of your love Just like holy water to my lips (hey, hey) Yes I do know how I survive (yes I do know) know why Im alive To love and be with you
State of life-may I live-may I love Coming out the sky, I name me a name Coming out-silver word-what it is It is the very nature of the sound the game Siamese, indionese. to tibet treat the life As a game, if you please (hey) Coming up-carabi-this sense of freedom Derives from a medative state Movin on, believe thats it, call it magic Third world, it is, I only guessed it Shablam idi shablam ida Shablam idi shablam ida Shablam idi shablam ida
So much heart in this piece. Music cant be divided like critics are used to, into "plastic" one, created with help of computers or synthesizers and "true" one, played on real instruments. It's all about passion and craftsmanship, not the device you use to create it.
harleygal24 I have to agree that the Summers disco version sucks royally! She does a live version that’s better but Vangelis background and Jons sound is hard to beat. I have the white album and spent many an hour with it also.
This is a great tune. I never get tired of it. I still have it on vinyl. Donna Summer ruined this tune. It's too funky & she's boring. I like Chrissie Hynde's version better than Donna's. Sorry Donna, I tell it like it is.
The friends of Mr. Cairo is perhaps one of the most beautiful albums ever released!
I had no idea Donna summer covered it. Its also in the ending credits to "single white female" by someone I've never heard of. Thats what brought me here, to hear the masters do it right.
Re: the controversy. The Vangelis version is without doubt musically superior (aside from being the original). It is much more interesting to listen to. But IMO that the Donna Summer version is more soulful and it brought this song to the masses. I can't help but think of the protests that would surround this song were it to be introduced today. So sad, and a sign of how much our society has deteriorated in the last 25 years.
Jon Anderson and Vangelis are brilliant! end of ,no shit, NO one can replicate or copy their music, but lets not forget most of their collaboration was devoted to show music, therefore was written for interpretation and performance by others,That along with their own vocal and musical brilliance made them unique.
Now Now children! simply enjoy the fantastic music and stop quibbling who gives a $h1t how its made it truly is all time brilliant! And I agree Jon Anderson COULD sing the phone book but alas my number is not in it.
The album cover may very well be the original, since covers were depending on which country the album was fabricated (pressed). Canada had one cover, US another and Portugal (low cost country in the 70's) a third. Not to speak about the Mexican version, the cover was a copy of a UPI delivery invoice!
My favorite version remains Moodswings, with Chrissy Hynde of the Pretenders singing. This is a good version as well. For those who love Vangelis, Mood Swings put out some great electronic music which is worth a listen.
At the time this came out it was so different it became the musical equivalent of marmite( either love it or hate it) my taste runs to early metal( Sabbath, Maiden) but this is so refreshing in its clear sounds, still sounds good now, so much better than the pap we get fed now, and I do not believe in slagging off individual "artists" on here, they sell records, cannot call it music or songs, it still sells so they got to be doing something right, I can't see it.
I am used to Donna Summer's version, but this is unique in itself as well. Very world music sounding. He has a unique voice, indeed. I would prefer her vocals and his instrumental.
The thing is this version is much finely produced than Donna's, which was made to sound poppie and radio-friendly (no objections to that, though) all the while Vangelis and Jon were aiming artistically for a higher mark...
I do agree..Donna Summer is good, but not with this song---Jon IS the definitive singer for this song! And, you are right, zap, Jon Anderson could sing the phone book or an instruction manual and it would sound lyrical..A voice like Jon's comes along once in a lifetime--thanks, Jon, for sharing your voice!!! Like the Mona Lisa, A global treasure
jon anderson ha such a pure high octave range ,this song is just an adventure for him.i feel the fun he has singing this.just one of the best tunes ever!
@zapkvr well it certainly isn't mozart is it or panpipe new age music, vangelis is a master of the electronic synth, it was his music that began my desire to explore the the world of 'electronic' music. Though thankyou for the sarcasm, it is always such a pleasurable way to begin a day, and I have attempted to respond to it with a slice of my own................................ I am your father.
@zapkvr i pulled no face, this two dimensional forum does not allow such luxuries, this is synth pop, therefore it is 'electronic' music, where is the debate?, the sarcasm in my first response was in the first 'Mozart' portion.
I have listened to this for years..it's the best double sax piece I have ever heard...brilliant!..and Donna Summers, although I think she is a great artist, can't compare to this version.
Terrific song. Shame Vangelis wasn't still working with Demis Roussos at the time. I bet Demis would've tore the sky up with his interpretation of this
this whole album can make you have a religious experience... my dream concert is jon and vangelis .... sound like the signal from you .. bring me to meet your sound, and ill give you to my ...heart!!!! awesome lyrics and sax work!!!
WOW! Again the evidence is here. Vinyl does sound better then cd. A rounder and more warm sound. And I was born in 1963 so I was 18 when that some came out.
Thanks for sharing this wonderfull track! I was born in the year 1981, and "Friends of Mr Cairo" is one of the albums my father used to play in the car when I was a child. Love it!
Thankh you very much for the post also. With some recordings I prefer, the analog LP's in comparison to the digital recordings. Analog seems to capture, richer tones.
Yes, sounds to be so., however, listening to this particular recording and compared to the other digital recordings, this song sounds a lot more clear. I believe it also has a lot to do with one's own malleus when uploading music on YouTtube.
I had this record too. I loved it and thank you for this post. I haven't kept my records and lost them due to divorce years ago. I hope you have a better 2010 and Beyond*
True, when the single I'll Find My Way Home was released it did really good in the charts & the duo appeared on Top of the Pops so Polydor decided to reissue the album with the sides flipped & the single as the first track of the album.
Thank you, also, I missed the chance to see Jon Anderson when he was touring on his own shortly after the release of "Friends of Mr Cairo" he did a concert at a play house. The concert cost $20.00 which was unheard of then; the price included wine and cheese.
@luis90125: Ok, didn't know there was a white sleeve with I'll Find My Way Home listed on the back. The only pressings with white sleeve & 7 tracks I've seen had no tracklisting on the sleeve.
thanks for the quick reply...it had been so long since my sister brought this jewel back from hong kong before it was released in north america....so may ppl borrowed it from me along with blank tapes ! ;)....after it disappeared from my collection, i kept ordering it but they were always on back order...thanks again
@Columbiastargazer - Hey, I know why you're asking this - what difference in the world it makes I do not know, but it must do because I'm actually answering - So. . .. on the original album with the black and white cover and no 'I'll find My Way Home", "State of Independence" was 1st track on side B.
Anyone who thinks Donna Summer's version is better has their musical taste between their butt cheeks. I really love Donna Summer but she WRECKED this song. Jon Anderson could sing the phone book and it would sound better than anything that Donna Summer ever did. Sorry folkses that's just the way it is.
@zapkvr I so have to agree with you, and I am the biggest DS fan on earth. She did no justice to this song with her cover, and like my sister said: "She sounds like an asian trying to sound Jamaican" in that cover.
@zapkvr: No, not really. Donna's version is beautifully produced by Quincy Jones and her voice is, well, a little bit more soulful than Anderson's. I do admit that the choir parts in Donna's version are over the top, an exaggeration that don't fit to well with the rest of the song's arrangements. But overall, the version has enough merits to be considered as a pretty good one.
@zapkvr I totally agrre except Donna Summer is a real A-Hole for real. She lives in Bell-Haven and thinks she's all that! She's is if you're talking about how much of a jerk someone can be or stuck up.
@zapkvr EWWW Donna Summer's, how discusting! I'm seeing Jon tonight in S.F. SIKE!!!
But there is a nice version called "Spiritual High (State of Independance)" done by Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders with Moodswings. It's different but it's not DISCO!
Hey ! I didn't know about the original version, because 20 years ago I bought the Best of Jon and Vangelis, but this song is just 4:22 inth CD, instead of this one of 8 minutes, and obviously this the original one, I mean it shows, it's from the original album, thank you for posting it oX !
This song brings back special memories for me. When my first born son was only months old & he was a little cranky, I'd put on this tune, hold him real close & slowly dance around the living room with him.

Apart from all the "techno comments" you have to admit, it's a great song! :)

This is such a joyous song. I think I read somewhere that Jon Anderson is quite religious. It figures.

I love the 'turning of the album'...lol!!!
By the way...I do love this song....so much so...the album turning takes nothing away from the song.
Still laugh :)!!!

Analog seems to capture, richer tones.
phfrankh 2 years ago 2
@phfrankh isn't the tonal property of vinyl then lost when it is digitised and uploaded on youtube?
liquidmonkey2000 2 years ago 2
Yes, sounds to be so., however, listening to this particular recording and compared to the other digital recordings, this song sounds a lot more clear. I believe it also has a lot to do with one's own malleus when uploading music on YouTtube.

I had this record too. I loved it and thank you for this post. I haven't kept my records and lost them due to divorce years ago. I hope you have a better 2010 and Beyond*

"The album cover that you are watching is not the original; this album cover was released later containing the bonus track "I'll find my way home!"
karmatoga 2 years ago 3
True, when the single I'll Find My Way Home was released it did really good in the charts & the duo appeared on Top of the Pops so Polydor decided to reissue the album with the sides flipped & the single as the first track of the album.

Thank you, also, I missed the chance to see Jon Anderson when he was touring on his own shortly after the release of "Friends of Mr Cairo" he did a concert at a play house. The concert cost $20.00 which was unheard of then; the price included wine and cheese.
karmatoga 2 years ago
It's strange because i have the original cover in L.P. (white whit Vangelis drawings) whit the additional song.

@luis90125: Is it listed on the back of the sleeve?
0x51d 1 year ago
@0x51d Yes, is listed, i just check it.
luis90125 1 year ago
@luis90125: Ok, didn't know there was a white sleeve with I'll Find My Way Home listed on the back. The only pressings with white sleeve & 7 tracks I've seen had no tracklisting on the sleeve.
0x51d 1 year ago
I happen to love both versions. I don't think of it so much as one being better than the other. Just two different interpretations of the same song.

thank you for the upload..great sound...just curious, was this song the 2nd track on side A or the 1sr track on sude B ? :)
Columbiastargazer 2 years ago 2
What an odd question, cool. It's track A2.
0x51d 2 years ago
thanks for the quick reply...it had been so long since my sister brought this jewel back from hong kong before it was released in north america....so may ppl borrowed it from me along with blank tapes ! ;)....after it disappeared from my collection, i kept ordering it but they were always on back order...thanks again
Columbiastargazer 2 years ago

SUNSHINESBETER 1 year ago
@zapkvr Yes, this is better.
Donna's was a worthy cover though.
John27346 1 year ago
@zapkvr: No, not really. Donna's version is beautifully produced by Quincy Jones and her voice is, well, a little bit more soulful than Anderson's. I do admit that the choir parts in Donna's version are over the top, an exaggeration that don't fit to well with the rest of the song's arrangements. But overall, the version has enough merits to be considered as a pretty good one.

@zapkvr As you should! But we can both like Jon's version of the song right?

@zapkvr with a comment like that, i guess in defense of 11235 i have to say that you're foreskin is covering your ears.

@zapkvr Thanks for telling that. Give it to Donna Summer

@zapkvr I totally agrre except Donna Summer is a real A-Hole for real. She lives in Bell-Haven and thinks she's all that! She's is if you're talking about how much of a jerk someone can be or stuck up.

@zapkvr We agree to disagree here! But thanks to Donna Summer and her recording State Of Independence I have discovered Jon Anderson & Vangelis!
For that I am grateful! But I still Love Donna Summer :-)
aaflyer98 1 year ago
@zapkvr EWWW Donna Summer's, how discusting! I'm seeing Jon tonight in S.F. SIKE!!!
But there is a nice version called "Spiritual High (State of Independance)" done by Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders with Moodswings. It's different but it's not DISCO!
RadioCannedMusic 1 year ago
@zapkvr Your opinion, fortunately counts for nothing. Donna Summers version is streets ahead.

Hey ! I didn't know about the original version, because 20 years ago I bought the Best of Jon and Vangelis, but this song is just 4:22 inth CD, instead of this one of 8 minutes, and obviously this the original one, I mean it shows, it's from the original album, thank you for posting it oX !
