  • Whoever dislikes this, is obviously deaf, or does not appreciate the art of guitar... Pepe Romero, you did an amazing job(:

  • This is Granadinas composed by Ivor Mairants found in his book The Art of Flamenco Guitar where the companion music is also played by Pepe Romero.

  • Romero sry Master

  • Pepe Romera some spanish red wine and a nice chica is all you need to be happy in the spanish way....I love it all ;-))

  • How many people know Pepe, his technique, teaching style, or his students? (and not just Kanningeiser, Tennant, etc)

I can think of no reason to leave anything negative about Pepe or his playing, unless you have a video posted that is on the same level.

  • @paulandlesson I was just thinking what awesome guitar players these critics on here must be.

  • I do understand that it's not pure flamenco (thanks to conversations I've had with serveral people on here) but it's still brilliant. I do think you can take puritanism too far, and for guitarists, that could have you spending millions on and taking dozens of instruments to a concert; just to be "authentic to the repertoire". (Vihuela, Renaissance lute, Baroque lute, 18th century guitar, flamenco "peg head" guitar, Torres [if you can find one],and a modern concert classical guitar)

  • Robby Kreiger of The Doors, absolutely ripped this off in Spanish Caravan!

  • @MattyGuitar665 Yes sir. Robby is actually a flemenco player himself.

  • @MattyGuitar665 In that case you still don't know shit cos even that is originally called the "Asturias Leyenda" and that's a lot older then The Doors. 17th century early 18th if i'm not mistaken.

  • @TruegaDeiOutThere Thanks for the history lesson.. Whats your point? I didn't say The Doors wrote it Numb Nuts... Pay attention.

  • This guy shred with eloquence.

  • It's a stylistic melange, of course, but done marvelously well. Four stars.

  • @DhrRepelsteel Bless you, father pope.

  • I still think he's brilliant for denying the puritan in Segovia to outlaw flamenco techniques from the classical discipline. Pepe also is a total badass, like the way he turns his head away during rasgueados. lol

  • wow, you play well sir, your an ugly fucker tho

  • My favorite guitarist ever (and not just because my maternal great-grandfather had the same name)! Although it was my grandfather who used to make spanish classical guitars.

Pepe Romero has amazing technique and a real passionate feel for the music and the instrument. What a talented family. Going to Carnegie Hall to hear this in person was a real treat, and something I'll never forget.

  • Pepe turns the place out!

  • I think that classical guitarist like him play more virtuoso than metalshredders

  • @daumoro i learned how to shred in 2 years. I've studied 8 years with classical guitar, 6 years at a University, and I'm only beginning.

to compare this to shredding/metal/rock is like comparing children's finger painting to Picasso.

  • insanely awesome.

  • 2:24 "hachooo!" it wasn't me.

  • wow pepe super

  • ɥǝqɐʞ ɯǝʞƃuɐɔ uɐǝʞɐʞ `ʞǝɐʇ

  • He is a classical player it souds!

  • One of the bigger regrets in my life is missing his show in San Francisco a few years ago. Virtuosos are too few and too far between.

  • tres bien!

  • oui!

  • It's to bad he didn't have a dynarette! Very lovely a like his use of dynamics and his techinic. Too bad I not as good. :'(

  • Superlativo!

    Maestro, quando viene in Italia?

    You should come!

  • this is my teacher's teacher. first time I have heard him. Now I know why my teacher is so good.

  • your teacher obviously learned from one of the best.

  • muy buen video

  • Parabens, gostei demais...Maria Helena de Santo André,S.P

  • wow, what a master!

  • Pepe Romero's flamenco does not have quite the assertivness of, say, Sabicas. But it also lacks the harshness. His purity of tone is unparalleled and allows access to parts of flamenco's soul not available in other interpretations.

    An amazing artist.

  • I still think I put Sabicas at the top of my list. Even though i like Pepe, I rather think he is a much better Classical player than Flamenco. Of course that is just my opinion.

  • wt fck?? 0:32 ??? D:

  • anyone know which guitar he was playing here? His sons.. or Blochinger...other...?

  • I try to play flamenco puro and I have no understanding of classical guitar at all but I want to say that I have no problem with this Pepe Romero at all when he plays flamenco. In this Granaina he expreses for example very well the sequence that is the cante por Granaina.

Pepe has his own personality and to me it is perfectly flamenco.

  • Pepe Romero is one of the best guitarist who can play both style category .NOT best clasiccal guitarist or Not best flamenco guitarist.

  • ok buleria was simply awesome i just dont care for his sycopated almost progressive style my fav is still paco pena but i do enjoy de lucia very much and plan on continuing to delve into his work thank you for info on him

  • i listened to afew of de lucias pieces rio anchos was not overly impressed the passion was no where near what i heard while listening to penas bulerias......sorry

  • im no expert not by far but i think i agree with you this is some sort of classical but this has nothing to do with the sounds i hear from paco pena

  • maestro

  • wich song is this, sum1 please tell me?????????

  • This is Flamenco Puro. Like the title says "tribute to sabicas"

  • he's got a foot stand

    .

  • i agree, he does indeed have a foot stand...

    +1!

  • I agree with skingaz.

  • That people can DARE to criticise the playing of Pepé Romero is utterly beyond me. OK sure, you may not like his style, but who in their right mind can argue with his command of the instrument? Paco Peña said once that it was impossible for a flamenco player to achieve the refinement of sound of a classical guitarist. Well, Pepé Seems to have combined both the lightning technical and brutality of Flamenco with that refinement of tone. AMAZING!

  • Incidentally, does anyone know which luthier made this instrument? Looks like possibly an Aram or Ambridge to me, very hard to tell without a clear close up of the headstock though.

  • I agree with you fully. I believe Celedonio took many secrets with him to the grave. The Romero style is one of the most refined in classical guitar.

  • Still no idea what guitar it is? It could be built by his son... I like Pepes choice of guitars either way, great tone to them.

  • It looks like a Candelas guitar made by Tomas Delgado in Los Angeles. His guitars project a lot of bass.

  • i think this guitar might have been made by Miguel Rodriguez. He is a great luthier, and makes most of Pepe's guitars.

  • @skingaz You're absolutely right, partner. Maybe it's not traditional, but that's not the point, is it? Pepe is a world class guitarist in classical guitar, and can hold his own with his own brand of beautiful flamenco style of playing. Not so long ago, people didn't care for anything but hard core flamenco. Now we have the incomparable Gypsy Kings who play rumba flamenco, a music that plays right to your heart.

  • @skingaz yes indeed Pepe Romero is very careful with producing the fine tone he wants on the guitar. What Paco Peña said was complete rubbish if he did say it, because either flamenco or classical guitarist, you are playing the guitar, it all depends on how you play a piece and what piece you are playing!

  • @CNFrostXY Sounding like a bit of a Brit are we?

  • @skingaz

  • I was going to see him live with the Spanish national orchestra (or something like that). However, a few days before the concert it was canceled. Why was it canceled? Because the stupid Spanish government. They didn't want to pay or they restricted them from travel, etc. Stupid Spanish government, man.

  • The fact that people can say pepe is anything less than one of the greatest guitar players in the world is evident of thier lack of ability in the instrument and that they can't appreciate the concierto de aranjuez. However i know there are some real talents viewing this video to admire romero's ability or take notes and i'd like to ask if anyone can tell me how to do his rasgueado or if they are a really nice person perhaps a how to video response.

  • For all those who enjoy dissaproving the playing style of Pepe Romero, get up, and play like him! Make me cry with the Recuerdos de la Alhambra tremolo or dream with a landscape with his recording of Sevilla by Albeniz. Are you chosen by conductors like Neville Mariner for playing with orchestras? It's easy to criticize typing in your PC since you can't convince anyone with your hands on the guitar.

  • This is for all of you who think this is not flamenco, specially for that one who thinks flamenco is all about the rhythm (WTF): This is a Granaína, a free flamenco style, derivated from Fandangos..., why do you make him the object of your criticism if you don´t know a damn about Flamenco music...??So that don´t speak about neither respect nor understanding. This guy is playing Flamenco in a "vintage" style...old flamenco style, the root, and by the way, he is quite good.

  • This is a Classical Approach to flamenco, done beautifully by maestro pepe romero. If you can understand this, then search for de lucia, montoya, etc.

  • AND YOU ALSO WORK FOR NASA RIGHT?

  • It seems to me that you speak more than you should. Pepe Romero is NOT a "cocky guy" at all. If it's about icon guitarists, I can tell you that Pepe, Manuel Barrueco and Barbosa Lima are real gentlemen, and I can state that because I met them. You think you are very funny telling that of "makeup", but it just bears out your ignorance about the repertoire and the approach of every artist to the music.

  • Your probably 60 years old, and wear to much makeup. What happened, did Pepe reject your advancments? Poor baby!

  • This is not flamenco, I think.

  • not flamenco! good feeling and touch and a classical maestro but flamenco is all about the rhythm and classical guitarists don't apply it with understanding or respect!

  • I admire Pepe very much, and have listened to him since I was 8 years old. I had lessons from 8 - 16, when I did my grade 8 theory and practical. That is where I left it in terms of Academics. But to this day I practice every day for one hour religiously with a metronome etc. Pepe, is a great.

  • Hey Peplicus,

I'd like to see you playing this "flashy garbage", and see how you do, you stupid moron!

First learn how to play, then shut up and listen. you sound like a frustrated beaten wanna be guitarist that the only thing that learned how to play, after ten years is "Classical Gas".

I realized that most comments here are from people that have no idea of guitar playing, all they can do is to watch You Tube Videos.

  • you have to learn to play the instrument to have any sort of conviction in your opinion. But that is your opinion and everyone should respect that. there is no need to argue over a stupid youtube video.

  • actually it's just redundant, but that's alright.

  • no, it's a pleonasm, or redundancy, or tautology, battology.

    ;)

  • some of the most clever music ever composed and i am a major classisal fan but this is some of the greatest gtr ever brought to human kind so flawless and soft with wicked fast stumming parts, and i have pepe romero and his whole family on a cassette i grabbed for like 4 bucks they do a huge flamenco piece. i wish i could find it if any one knows the album im speeking of please let me know ,his dauther and son i tkink play on it peace out

  • well. simply this. As a musician you play the pieces that you like the most, and you play the best.

  • dahi... genious:)

  • So... THAT'S what guitar playing is supposed to sound like!

  • i wish he was still professor at UNM :((((( that was so long ago though

  • I agree! This is Pepe Romero! And he's fabulous.

  • His playing position here reminds me of Glenn Gould. Don't knock it.

  • admuchon

  • who actually gives a shit about his position!?! Its Pepe Romero who we are watching!!! Just... ENJOY!! =D

  • Curling over your guitar puts your head in a position that you can hear better.

  • watch the master class, he talks about postitioning in his master class.

  • re:positioning. as you see, pepe is a very short guy,he has a big tummy too. also, he's old so his back start bending forward.

  • I don't know if that's true. Maybe he just bends forward to get a better reach across the fretboard without bending his wrist; I often do the same thing. One guy I know gets so curled up when he plays that he looks like an ape, but he's only in his twenties.

  • How do you criticise a man with total technic and a great career, I see instead that everyone likes the Paco de Lucia performance of the concierto de aranjuez, everyone has their own thechnics even the worst instrumentist

  • i know thats yoru kunzie!!!! tell me teh truth

  • you r my favorte in classic but i never like your flamenco.there is just 50% flamenco feeling

  • I also use a position very similar to that. This is a granadinas right?

  • In re "positioning": If it works for *YOU* don't listen to your Teacher. Everyone's body is different, distances between elbow, knee, wrist, etc., relative to the standard size of a Classical guitar must be taken as individual-specific; if you find a position which enables you to work the fingerboard the most comfortably, do it! Your Teacher is a dork.

  • Pepe Romero is angelic in his playing; a true genius at the guitar.

  • Muhteşem!!

  • A Master....

  • whats the name of that piece that the doors used in spanish caravan i have seen segovia play it and now pepe

  • You mean Asturias by Isaac Albeniz?

  • what do you guys think about the way pepe positions the guitar, i have tryed and at first is very unconfortable but once you get use to is easy to play scales and the way the hand is position is very confortable, but every time i want to stick to the postion my teacher tells me is the wrong way to do it. Sabicas also used this position.

  • it is heartfeeling conversation with his guitar without any mistakes, thats real guitarplaying. Thank him for his sacrifice of practice

  • Fantastic!

  • Pepe pwns. I met him at a restaurant once and I bought him a tunafish and mayo sandwhich. We talked about his car, nice guy.

  • Amazingly wonderful... I have always loved Pepe!

  • Beautiful!!!!
