The worst thing overall in my opinion was that the unionists had originally opposed home rule in Ireland for fear of being discriminated against because of their religion as they were in minority. When the tables were turned however they decided to become what they feared and started bullying the catholics. Most disgusting piece of hypocrisy i've ever heard of.
Ireland is bankrupt, it is in debt of 700 billion pounds. This is equivalent to Every man, woman & child in Ireland in debt of 175,000 pounds. Those people who want United Ireland will starve if they had to live in Ireland. Tell dissident republican criminals to stop using United Ireland as a cover to expand your illegal empire.click Justice party UK.
What a complete load of nonsense. 'One man one vote'? Everyone in Northern Ireland over the voting age had a vote. The 'inequality' was that if a someone owned more than one property then each property counted towards a vote.
Typical misinformed comment. No, not everyone had a vote in this period in Northern Ireland. The franchise was restricted to rate-payers and gave more votes to company directors (always protestant). Thus, the poorer sections of society (generally Catholic but also some Protestants were disenfranchised. This was a method of hegemonic control by the UUP Stormont regime at the time.
It may have had some valid points, but there is no doubt it was hi-jacked and used by republicans. You have also put to rest the big wicked anti-Catholic Unionist government in your comment by admitting Protestants were no better off than their Catholic counterparts.
My comment did not say Protestants were no better off than Catholics. I was explaining how not all had the franchise. Just because a number of Protestants were also disenfranchised, as I said, did not alter the fact that the majority of the vote remained with wealthier protestants and protestant dominated industry. Therefore Catholics were indeed effected to a greater extent by losing the vote. I have no religious affiliation, I am pointing out what your not and what you ignore.
Protestants dominated the industry? Yes that may have been the case, but in Northern Ireland more Catholics actually held managerial positions than Protestants.

It would be unfair to say this didnt impact on Protestant also, it did but it obviously effected the Nationalist community a lot more.
Such discrimination will never happen again and we should all be glad of that, no matter who you are.
