Excuse my ignorance and I'm not trying to rub anyone up the wrong way but I just don't understand the double bass. Why do people play double bass these days when they could play bass guitar? Why do people choose to play an instrument that's obviously too big and not practical? Imagine playing a guitar that big. Or imagine that you have the choice of playing a saxophone which is light and easy to use or play a sax which is heavy, not practical and bigger than you, which would you choose?

@andresdalessandro I have to say I agree. I love the sound you get from an upright, but it can be pretty well replicated on a fretless acoustic strung with flatwound strings. I play a dean fretless. It even has fretmarkers ( though I'm sure this would be frowned upon..... ) It sounds like the real thing, but is easy to move around, easy to play, and much cheaper....and yes, if you're reading between the lines - No I cant play a double bas and wish I could :-)

@TheDux09 If you look inside the f-hole of double bass you'll see on the G string side there is a sound post that spans between the top and back of the bass, in line with the bridge foot. The E string side has a long piece of wood glued to the top, beneath the E string. These two parts contribute to the sound of the instrument as well as provide structural strength. So, you've got to reversed, for appropriate sound.

That's why I told you to play it backwards, it's cheaper.
