I started crocheting and knitting in memory of my great grandmother who past away in last December. She only taught me how to crochet, but never to knit. This weekend, I got all her knitting needles and hooks. I looked at other videos online and yours is so crystal clear. Thank you so much for the video!
you saved my life! I doing a play called ' The Diary of Anne Frank' and I'm Mrs. Frank, my director told me to learn how to knit but unfortunately I don't have a clue who to ask. So once again thank you for helping me learn how to knit!
Wow. I've never knit in my life. I've admired it from afar. This is very helpful, even the background music helps me focus on the visual! It all makes me marvel at the creativity and intelligence of the humans who figured out how to use 2 sticks and some strung-out lamb's wool to create clothing! People are amazing. Anyone know anything about the early history of knitting? How'd it start?
This is insanely helpful. Thank you so much! I've been trying to use the book Stitch 'n Bitch, which is actually much better then any other book I've found, but I need to see what's going on in real time. Thanks again!
I think knitting would be a very meditative activit and i would love to make gifts for all my friends and their babies! I have to learn from someone my gramma wont teach me.
@jojopng1 Because this isn't an actual pattern, there's no defined length to begin with. In the video the yarn end was about 15 inches (38 cm) - always better to have a little extra than not enough.
You know, I've been trying to learn how to knit for a while by books and reading. Major fail. Your video, though, was super easy and fun to learn! Thank you so much for posting this up. You've made me a happy rookie knitter at last! :)
This is a great video! On bed rest for a high risk pregnancy and hubby bought me a beginners kit. Good supplies but the book and images were like reading another language! Watched this video a couple times (with many pauses) and I was able to knit my first thing! Kinda looks like a knit bandage because I made my loops SO tight, but I'm anxious to learn more! Thanks for the great video!!!
i bought a knitting package and i read the instruchions and they didnt help so i looked up how to knit and this came up and i learn the first time i watched it, im knitting a scarf.
I switched off the music, could concentrate more and managed to do the casting. By the way have noticed some rude comments to other beginners, as they enjoy being rude behind 'anonymous monikers'. I switchduadined off the music and now can do the casting. Onduadinward to the next stage. I am blocking the rude ones on here.
Am finding the slip knot a bit fast and the casting is fast at first, when you are looking at the video and then looking at your casting you miss the other things going on. I keep putting on the pause button.
I recently purchased some yarn and needles, but I wonder would wooden or bamboo ones work better than the metal ones I have? It seems as though my yarn always slides off them, and because of this, I've never been able to get past the third row of stitches. I've tried time and time again, but my yarn ALWAYS slides off the needles!
@Gyarren I find the wooden and bamboo needles slide around a lot less than metal ones. I think they are better for beginners for this reason, but they do tend to cost a little more.
I literally leanred how to knit yesterday. And my friend asked me, "So who finally taught you?"
I replied," "The Hands" from cyberseams." Of course, I got a crazy look since she had no idea what I was even talking about. :-] But THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH for making this video and making it a "knitting for dummies" type because its exactly what I needed!!
thanks for this! I'm just starting to learn how to knit. how far behind am i? well.. i'm barely going to buy a ball or two of yarn tomorrow or so... i was wondering if you could do a tutorial video on using more than one ball of yarn.. like making a scarf with more than one color :)
This is brilliant, I've been looking for a good video to teach me knitting and this one is very good, all the other ones are too difficult and use too much faff, great job.
It's been two and a half years( I stopped after my mom passed on), ...... And thank God y'all are on you tube!!! I finally feel like knitting again!! ;)
Good video. I learnt to knit a few years ago but haven't done it for years, and forgot how, so this video was very helpful. The extra notes on the bottom were good too. Thank you!
best one! I tried every way of casting on and this one was the fastest! It may take a couple tries to get it but once you pick it up it's quick and easy!
Did I miss the part where it said what size needles/type of yarn should I buy if I'm a beginner? I checked your site, and the link provided, but I didn't see any recommendation.
Not a good video from the time you put the loop on the knitting needle you did not show how you got the three loops on the needle to begin to cast off which makes it hard to follow.
I can't believe that I thought was going to be hard to learn how to knit; but video has proved me wrong. I just finished making my first scarf and it's all thanks to you :D
no i get it! it depends on what type of thingy your doing to get the cast on for ex. if you have a scarf you want to make you need about 10-25 cast ons not sure though :P
Thank you so much! This was so helpful! I was trying to read 3 different books on how to do this and follow the horrible illustrations, but once I saw your video I was able to start knitting right away!!!!
wow! this doesn't look to hard at all! so hey, Rosie Greer is the only man i've ever heard of that was into knitting. are there any other men out there doing this?
i was given a knitting kit of a fluffy bear for xmas by my partner. i dont know how to kit so thanks for starting me off. ive done 8 rows and all going good so far. Im going to give it finished to her next xmas. i love a challange. its a bit hard with this wool as its all fluffy and as a man im making the stiches too tight. but this i can fix. thanks again xx Dave xx
Glad I found this video. Now I've gotta find those knitting needles I bought a couple of years ago to try knitting again. I've crocheted for years (decades) but knitting seemed too hard. This video made it look much easier than I feared.
@jonmmoss - I do crochet and knitting always looked hard to me too. Even the patterns look mind blowing. I've got the needles, and a children's book on knitting .. and this video. I hope it is easier than it looks, but it looks a world away from crochet.
I wish the camera was a bit closer to the needles and slightly more clear. I'm going to be trying this very soon.....hope it works. I have always wanted to knit.
I have never knitted before. I watched this video over and over again. Then got my yarn and I am now knitting. The video also has a catchy toon which helped me have a good rythym while I knitting and I got the hang of it. This is a good video for beginners. Thanks. I am now making my first scarf.
hey just wanted to thank you!!!!!! ive been knitting for a whitle but just could not master the casting on method...but today i followed the method and wow, im knitting like a pro and its so neat!!!!!! thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cxs its kinda difficult to get those stuff here where i saty in abu dhabi nybody frm here hu noes dis stuff pla do let me noe if u noe where to get them.
@asmhy21 hi there, i would like to respond to your question by stating that although it is technically "possible" to do this with a pencil it is not preferable. The graphite in the pencil can wear off onto the yarn creating a dirty appearnce. The biggest issue i have found with using pencils for knitting is the yarn snagging on the tip of the pencil where the graphite protrudes out of the wood exterior. it makes it quite difficult & the end result can be quite unappealing :/
@asmhy21 Also pencils, unlike an actual knitting needle, does not have a platform at the base of it to keep your work from sliding off. i have lost projects due to this issue. If you happen to have any thrift or second hand stores in your area im sure you will have better luck finding needles there and for very cheap :] Hope that i helped in some way! good luck :]
thank you so so much for posting this video! you nade me extremely happy these holidays. i'm a first time knitter. i just can't believe i'm already making rows and rows of purl and knit stitches. ;-0) you're videos have been very helpful. keep it up!!!
Oh man, what is wrong with me?! Everytime I try to do this I do it to tight. So when I transfer it's to tight on the other needle. I need help! About to stab something or someone, j/k. Seriously I have been trying for months!!!!!!!!! Ahhhhhh!!!! Could it be to much frustration? Why is it so tight? It's nothing like the video, her's slide off like butter mine is stuck! Help!!!!!
Great video! I searched through other videos before this one and was SO lost! The blue background really helps to focus and not be distracted! this looks like fun and really easy i will try it thanks so much hopefully i can make scafs as a ministry for youth and older people who are in need for the winter
excellent, very informative. I've just picked knitting back up after several years and this was a perfect refresher course to get started :) very well shot and clear to the eye. thank you!
Anytime I learn a craft like crocheting or knitting I can't help but think of the people who invented it. Genius! I would never be able to invent something like this. I totally admire anyone who has launched any crafting technique!
amazing video. my mum taught me once and when i made a mistake i didnt know how to fix it, had to start again and forgot how to - thank goodness for this video!
A gd video. I came out with half a scarf with the garter stitch. But can anyone tell me how to change into the other yarn ball as this yarn ball is finishing soon. Thanks a billion
Thanks!!! My grandma couldnt teach me how to knit because of her eyes but she taught me how to put the fringe on!!!!!! I have helped her make beautiful scarves for school kids!!!!!
its really relaxing to knit! i have times when i knit all the time, then i get tired of it and eventually i start knitting again :) but its good to repetate the basics
Just learning how to knit and I found this video the very best of all the videos that I looked at. I like that there is no talking, just illustration of each step. Thanks
Thanks for stharing this video with me :) I thought i knew how to knit but when casting off the string between needles got longer and longer, watching your video removed the long string between needles, Thanks Judy H
Thankyou! Yours was the first video for how to knit that came up, and I'm so glad it was, I have just knitted my first (wobbly) row since I was 7. Having given up 21 years ago! Now I am off to make a scarf ...

@toccatacat yes, the needle size will affect the stitch size, which will affect the size of the project.

Anytime I learn a craft like crocheting or knitting I can't help but think of the people who invented it. Genius! I would never be able to invent something like this. I totally admire anyone who has launched any crafting technique!
